What forbidden Space would you be unwilling to travel to in the various Sci-Fi universes?

The Unthinking Depths, in Vinge's Zones universe. It's the region in the center of the galaxy which disallows even the basic computation abilities we have here in the Slow Zone. As the name suggests, even human brains don't work right there.

Still not as horrible as Janeway's bed room or where ever it is she chooses to spawn.

My Own Suggestion...

Post by BenRG »

If I can include something from a licensed Star Trek novel, I want to nominate the Galactic Vortex. It is a cluster of hundreds of black holes and neutron stars all within about a cubic light year of each other. The cluster is a 'rogue', moving through the galaxy against the 'flow' of galactic rotation and in an orbit essentially running along the galactic equator. The Vortex's gravitational fields are so powerful that it sucks in any star system it encounters, destroys all the planets and reduces the primary to either a black hole or a neutron star (dependent on solar mass). It is pretty much the Star Trek equivalent of the Maw Cluster, but far more dangerous as it is has considerable relative motion against the motion of all objects around the galactic centre.

In the novel in question, the heroic crew of the Enterprise-nil were trying to stop a STL colony ship from diving into the vortex. I forget the name it might have been 'The Vortex'.

I would not travel to Vorlon space, Ssi-Ruuk space, Shadow space or the Unknown Regions. There are some various navigational hazards in a number of universes that I would also avoid.

Let's see... places I'd pass on seeing in various sci-fi universes.

LV-426, especially the Facehugger petting zoo. Of course, that pales in comparison to the xenomorph homeworld.

Kzinti space in Niven's Known Space novels. Who wants to be lunch for a sentient, tool-using tiger with a bad attitude?

the Delta Quadrant... not only is a big chunk of it owned by the Borg, but there's the risk of being picked up by Voyager and having to endure the company of Tom Paris and Neelix. (If it came down to that, I'd prefer assimilation.)

Remember to pass on the tour of scenic nothern Hyperion, from the Dan Simmons novels... otherwise, you may find yourself contemplating the view from the tree of pain. Pacem would be another world I could pass on.

Any world under the control of the Vong. Not quite as bad as Borg assimilation, but close. Also, I'd pass on a tour of the scenic lower levels of Coruscant or the spice mines of Kessel.

Anywhere in Berserker-controlled space from the Fred Saberhagen berserker novels. Though you may be lucky there, and they may simply kill you rather than dissecting you.

I second NecronLord on the Eye of Terror, and would add "...or any planet in the path of a Tyrannid swarm."

I'll also pass on seeing Z'Ha'Dum unless I get to make a general nuisance of myself by coming back afterwords asking people "so what do you want?"

If I found myself anywhere in the Lovecraft universe I'd shoot myself and spare the Great Old Ones any trouble.

A brief quote describing the Reavers.

"What will they do if they board us?"
"If they come onboard this ship, they will rape us until we are dead, eat our flesh, and sew our skins together to make their clothing. And if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order."

No, they'd just kill you dead and be done with that. There isn't that much horror to it.

Yeah I suppose...but I still wouldn't want to be there. Besides, I am a sort of masochist so I don't mind torture to much (I have been known to laugh while being choked, arm nearly broken, leg twisted, arm twisted) although I will admit freely that their kinds of torture would ruin me.

Whatever place the Tyranids from Warhammer 40K come from...

(If I recall correctly, it is a galaxy to the "east" of the Milky Way - I think it's called the M19 galaxy)

I should have put some of my ideas down on here, but I'd rather collect some of them and organize them better. Maybe I'll post some of my writing later (When I've actually got some done).

Quick question. If I wanted to post some of my writing, would I put it in Fanfic? I ask because my writing is my own, not based on existing universes. Maybe a stupid question, but some forums I have been on previously were strict about this sort of thing, and if it wasn't specifically "Fanfic" it had to be posted in a different forum section.
