This is something that has been somewhat of a stumbling block for me. How does one logically justify intolerance of intolerance? I believe it is a sound idea, but I lack the means with which to justify it.

Thoughts?

How to "logically" justify it? Don't you mean ethically? Logic simply goes from premise to conclusion. It doesn't justify premises, and ethics is all about premises.

To wit: "intolerance" is short-hand for "intolerance of social diversity", which is another way of describing ruthless coerced social conformism. The word "intolerance" by itself is meaningless, and people often forget that "intolerance" in the common vernacular is really just shorthand for something else. When you use the long-hand, it's obvious why "intolerance of intolerance" is a nonsensical concept, because social "intolerance" is intolerance of a specific thing.

I just see it as the difference between action and reaction. If I go out and kill someone that has done nothing to me, that is wrong. If I kill someone that is trying to kill me, that is not wrong. Simple.

To expand that to a social level (because ethics are concerned with social behaviour, not personal behaviour, which is what morals are) if you kill someone that was trying to kill someone else unprovoked, you have also done no wrong, you have helped to protect society by removing a destructive element.

The way I see it is that the problem of being intolerant of intolerance is that there's nothing inherently negative or positive about intolerance. Intolerance is only a negative thing when someone's being intolerant of a concept or idea that's otherwise harmless to, and possibly beneficial for society as a whole.

Sure, it's a free country, and you have the right to be the asshole you want to be. You have the right to associate with like-minded assholes and display your assholery in public, and there's no danger of being arrested simply for being an asshole. Just remember that the rest of us have the right to tell you to fuck off for it, however; nor do you have an automatic right to be listened to or accepted for your assholery.

Lets be blunt here. When people are saying I tolerant, they mean tolerant to differences which are otherwise harmless. They do not mean tolerate anything from terrorism to paedophilia.

When people say "intolerance to intolerance", they are really meaning "intolerance to bigotry". Not intolerance to people who are anti paedophilia or anti rapist.

So being intolerant to bigotry is not fucking hypocritical since being tolerant does not extend to tolerating any thing goes.
