SDN Worlds 4 Commentary Thread IV
Re: SDN Worlds 4 Commentary Thread IV
Posted a second brief bit in the prologue thread, this one concerning new humanist ideology, specifically, the undemocratic seizure of power by the 'vanguard party' and why, if you squit your eyes really hard and think happy thoughts, this is in fact a good thing. Again, not necessary reading or anything - I wrote it to help me keep a coherent idea of how my characters think and their politics work for future posts. May be subject to future change or removal as I have second thoughts; constructing a political ideology when I'm not making a total piss-take was a harder product to produce.

Interesting, Tanasinn. I'm a little confused about your nation's political history; can you give me a short summary so that when I go over things, I know broadly where to fit things into the historical background?
It's harder for me to extract the relevant information from several six-paragraph texts spread over half a dozen posts than it is to do the same from two or three paragraphs.

...but 8 against 1 is a different story.
Re: SDN Worlds 4 Commentary Thread IV
I can give you the short-and-dirty in brief points, Simon_Jester.
-Late 22nd century; ICR is hastily founded for mutual protection/economic benefit; a typical capitalist presidential republic.
-31st-33rd century; Things go downhill as the republic starts rattling apart: widespread unrest and violence, calls for reform, political corruption, criminal elements in the government, wealth gap increase, poverty.
-Early 33rd century; New Humanist Progressive Party is founded by a disaffected naval officer, one Vladimir Vasilyev Kuznetsov, an offshoot of the (then-seen-as-corrupt) Socialist Party; it's popular with the badly-paid, corrupt military and less so the public.
-Late 33rd century; total economic collapse of the republic; government dismissed and a highly unpopular President Harrison is elected; new humanism sees a spike in popularity.
-3300; first real battle of the revolution, a badly-handled riot on the capitol of the republic gets out of hand; new humanist radicals feature prominently and enjoy an increase in prominence and popular support. The rebellion on Elysion is crushed almost immediately, but inspires a fresh wave of insurrections that the government tries to crack down on with increasing brutality and panic.
-3302; New Britain Incident, republican navy called in to bombard the planet's capital after seizure by revolutionaries. One ship turns on the flag vessel and destroys it before being destroyed itself. This event marks the formal beginning of the civil war, with mass mutinies occuring across the navy and revolutionary elements in the military organizing in the republic's rim. The legitimate government pulls back and prepares for war.
-3304; Battle of New Britain. Revolutionary forces attack the symbolically-important world. Outclassed republican forces attempt a deception that succeeds in fooling the inexperienced rebel admiral; his executive officer, an as-of-then unknown member of the New Humanist Progressive Party named Roland Stein, shoots him when he refuses to surrender the helm and leads the rebel forces to their first victory. Hereafter his career is generally hindered, but he is not punished for executing his superior.
-3320; Third Battle of Elysion. Republican forces are defeated, naval assets flee. President Harrison is executed. Coalition of Cooperative Planets established. Stein again makes himself known by being a prominent face in relief efforts when the rebels in general are believed to be uselessly bickering.
-3321; Stein's popularity sees him win the chair of the CCP's ruling council. He is now the single-most powerful person in the New Humanist Progressive Party.
-3325; Anya Paterson, a council member and the only credible threat to Stein's popularity, is assassinated by terrorists. Stein reelected due to popularity, a sympathy vote (he was believed to be romantically involved with Paterson). Stein proposes and succeeds in a vote to abolish the council and leave only the Coordinator's position, that is, his.
-3331; Pre-election attempt on Stein's life. It fails. Stein proposes his position be made permanent under the current emergency. He succeeds.
-3334; old Federal Legislature dismissed, new one convened (largely new humanist). CCP is renamed the Humanist Union (not, actually, a reference to new humanism).
-3334-3400; rebuilding, rearming, stabilization, purges, et cetera. During this time frame, the Union annexed the New Haven sector. Relative economic prosperity, even in the rim.
-3400+; Economic recession begins. Increased interest in spreading the Union to other "benighted worlds." Federal government seeks to reestablish formal relations with the outside world.
That was...a bit longer than I'd intended, sorry, but I think it hits on all the important enough stuff. If you (or anyone else) want to read about it in more depth re: future RP scenarios: http://worldsofsdn.wikia.com/wiki/Histo ... nist_Union .
Hope that helps.

Badspork thought the button was red, so he thought it'd make the ship go fasta (after the buzz droids sabotaged the ship).
As for why it has a self-destruct... well [strak]who knew?[/strak] am i rite?
It's Orky engineering! My hypothesis is that one of their engines/thrusters is actually a live Spud missile, and that button was the Spud's impact fuse protruding into the engine room. Yes. That's it!
Anyway, you get another chance! There are THREE Ork ships headed to you now! OMG!

-.- FL. You don't think that's...a bit much, do you?
I'm fine with the Datton finding a way to follow the Audacity, it's a stretch but for the sake of the plot i suppose with the narrowed search area they got from knowing the ship's arrival point i'll buy it.
But how in the name of criminy do they know it's a chamarran ship? it's not visible, it's not broadcasting IFF and the only people who can identify a Blade class by it's signature alone are the Solarians due to the shinn Hokkaido incident.
I'll even accept you picked up the probe launch...but how in the name of the hells do they know it's piloted by chamarrans? for all they realistically know it's piloted by cthulu junior and company.

Or it could be one of those Umerian stealth recon cutters. You saw those, right? No? Exactly.
But yeah, FL, do try to keep an eye on the quality of your stealth ships and their detection capabilities. It's been getting a bit out of hand.
Anyway, I'm now picturing some kind of hybrid between Centralism and Byzonism emerging on the Refuge's doorstep. This could get interesting, though obviously any really significant content will have to be delayed for some time. It's one thing to be writing small posts set in early 3401 via GODDAMN UNREAL TIME, but it's poor practice to do things that will demand that others write responses in 3401 while everyone is still interested in things that take place in Q4 3400 like the BEEEF and the developing WAAAGH! in MEHspace.

Hmmm AA-24 is fairly close to Hiigara and it's right next to our allies the Refuge and a sort of no mans land between the Karlack/Bragulan alignment and Hiigaran/Refuge GIJOES. Hey Maya as we move into 3401 perhaps we should do a joint GIJOES post dealing with the rise of Centralism in our corner of space. What do you think?

All the way back in November of last year, Shroom and I discussed one of my own abandoned story ideas, which involved an isolated human colony battling a remnant force of the Scron in that general region of space; I never really settled on a specific location, but now that you mention it, AA-24 sounds nice. Maybe you and Mayabird can integrate your ideas with some of mine...Kartr_Kana wrote:Hmmm AA-24 is fairly close to Hiigara and it's right next to our allies the Refuge and a sort of no mans land between the Karlack/Bragulan alignment and Hiigaran/Refuge GIJOES. Also, I added something to the Sector C-6 debacle! So it may or may not be the super-stealthy Chamarran ship the Centralites detected. It could be the clunky frigvette with commercial cloak!
