STGOD 2K8 mk. II OOC
Incidentally, I should describe the Humanist prison policy as I'm imagining it.
-The New Humanist ideology frowns on the idea of imprisonment and the death penalty as punishment-focused affair, pointing to their rather mediocre performance throughout history and asserting that they simply deprive the species of potentially valuable assets.
-The "death penalty" is only used in extreme circumstances these days: escaping prisoners, criminals brandishing weapons, military circumstances.
-The justice system focuses on rehabilitation through (re)education; they scrub you out and fill you with all the things a good little citizen should think.
-Criminal sentences are based upon estimated and average rehabilitation times: if the criminal is not demonstrably improved, a sentence can be extended until such a time that the criminal is reformed.. Obviously, this gives the criminal motivation to cooperate.
-Criminals are absolutely isolated: they have contact only with their therapists and the occasional guard or doctor. This goes double for political prisoners, whose ideas (religious extremism, master-race ideas, et cetera) are considered infectious diseases. A prisoner who behaves poorly will have his or her contact priviledges revoked, and will only interact with "savants," which are basically like WH40k's servitors. Well-behaved, progressing criminals are awarded with visits from friends and family, though this priviledge fluctuates.
-The most extreme criminals (military dictators, corporate slavers, pirate warlords), if additionally considered incapable of being rehabilitated, might be sentenced to "forced resocialization," which is a polite euphamism for being made into a savant. This punishment is being phased out; most savants are purpose-grown these days.
-A person who cannot be rehabilitated will spend the remainder of their life in prison, unless they request to commit suicide, a priviledge typically granted to non-politicals. Persons catalogued as incapable of being rehabilitated are regularly re-evaluated to see if this is still the case.
-Criminal records are sealed from viewing by all but government authorities. Discrimination upon reformed criminals is a crime.
-Prisons try to focus on rewarding good behavior and attitudes.
-The average prison cell is a four-walled affair with a bed bolted to the floor, an unbreakable plastic mirror, a sink, a toilet, and an LED-light recessed in the ceiling. Floors are typically cement or bare metal.

Shiny, a tour sounds like a good idea, get their minds off the whole 'oppressive crazy space radfems' business.Tanasinn wrote:Oh, Ohma, do you mind if your characters are moved out of the meeting room? Perhaps being given a meal or tour of the ship, or perhaps back to their own vessel?

Omha: I left the "tour" a bit open, so you could describe a bit of character interaction. The aforementioned "buckethead" was the remaining power-armored guard, who would probably be showing you something like the ship library, a shuttle bay, or perhaps the FTL drives (obviously from a safe room!) Whatever the case, the only thing you need remember is that Union ships are pretty spartan and well-lit throughout, with most surfaces being polished, dark metal. Also feel free to have Erikson arrive on-scene if you want.
The demeanor of the guard (a member of the Union Guard/marines) is going to be formal and stiff, but polite. He's a man doing a job, but not one he minds.

Oh Tan, about Xev's interrogation, she might try to convince your interrogator of the righteousness of the Dominatrixiat cause if you send a woman, if it's a man she'll be kinda' smug and dismissive (or at least as much as is possible).

So, I've actually dispatched a number of raiding groups to prey on Chamarran shipping- there will be dozens or even hundreds of actions like this over the course of the campaign, assuming my raiders aren't hunted down or forced to retreat, and it would be a huge problem to have to act out every single boarding and taking... Any thoughts? Also, what effects can I expect if I succeed at substantially interdicting civilian and military commerce?

Firstly what kind of ships are these pirates? Secondly since when do refugees on surplus freighters count as part of my industry? All you're doing is getting rid of the chamaran ability to get their new worlds clean of humans in a palatable fashion.
Though on the subject of hunting down actual industry ships not involved in refugee actions are either in convoys possessed of cruiser escort or will have frigates come to assist when their beacon activates. So if you're going after those expect cruisers or stealthed missile and drone tossing cruisers.

1. the raiding group you've encountered consists of 2 "Jonas" protected cruisers, 2 "Inimical" interdiction pickets, and 1 "Vigilant" scout cruiser, 40 points total, stronger raiding forces including my 15 point protected cruisers may or may not exist... Anyways, these small groups are more than strong enough to take on a single "frigate," besides, your "Frigates" are capital ships and you've only got 6 of them; hardly enough to guard all your shipping.
2. It's simply not worth the cost to ship things across superlight distances unless the cargo is *worth* something; sure, the cattle car is worth less than, say, a transport full of war materials, but those will get hit too. It's pretty absurd to say that destroying and capturing precious FTL transport ships won't harm your industry.
3. I don't seem to recall your posting a decision to switch to a convoy system; such measures make little sense in peace-time as they decrease efficiency. Even forcing you to switch to a convoy system removes warships from your battle-line and will make interstellar movement of goods more difficult and expensive, decreasing industrial potential even if only in a small way.
4. Capturing ships full of "cattle" furnishes me with large numbers of Makayan humans who can be trained and armed, and who will look favorably on Syndicalism in the future. Moreover, it denies your populace the delicious luxury foodstuffs they so enjoy.

1. Ah bugger >.> so how much are you taking away from the collossal fleet of doom for this? or is literally every syndicalist ship in existence currently crashing in on my home turf? Oh and the six are a response force, they move in after the fact to shoot at people. so freighter ambushed, beacon turns on and then later the frigates arrive...though i suspect this might result in syndicalists mastering the novel idea of a FTL tug after the first time.
2. Thinking this through again yes probably. At any rate the human transport ship surplus is probably gonna diminish or disappear which'll affect kitty morale when the rationing starts to get worse, next raids you'll probably be finding chamaran freighters as well.
3. Point taken and 2 cruisers, at either end of the convoy, wouldnt do too much against a raiding force that size.
4. Hey whatever floats your boat dude.

I am just waiting for some more people to participate in the Summit. I have Lancer and Ohma's mini, but really I need Malacaster, the HU or Kushawni, someone else with some power to actually make discussing worthwhile.
Unfortunately, it seems like Warsies stunt has put the board in some disarray, and people seem like they are busy. I can wait, we just have to make sure to keep doing stuff for a little while. I might have a skirmish between the Sox and Cubs to spice things up and give the Summit something to talk about, if nothing happens over the weekend.

RPing sounds good to me, we may want to skip the talk between everyone about setting it up but other than that.Tanasinn wrote:Relating to the Dayab incident, Ohma, I have a plan I intend to put in place, following a bit of talk by my own highers-up and the gathered people at Dayab. I'll come up with some sort of coherent post. What's probably going to happen is that Brookes is going to consult what data she's acquired from the captured ships, what various prisoners have said and the interpretations thereof, and the comments of the turncoats on the sort of moves the Doms could be expected to make, with the probable outcome at this point being that she'll try and set an ambush.
That's provided that signs point to the Doms responding by sending sniffers in; I don't want to metagame.

Well, what info you'd get from the prisoners is going to be fairly similar to what you got from Xev, which is more or less "the 'Trixiat's comin' to get you and you'll all thank us someday!". But I think it's safe to say that from everything you've gotten (which is more or less what's in my OOB, and to a lesser extent the dramatis personae) that Brookes and co. will figure out what the Doms plan on doing so...yeah, ambush is probably fine (though the rest of the force is probably going to have orders telling them to go in cannon a blazing if they don't hear anything from the scouts after a certain amount of time).Tanasinn wrote:I'll come up with some sort of coherent post. A quick not to Ohma... You've got a ship on the outskirts of Makay.. If you get anywhere NEAR either one of our Armadas, you will probably be detected, with the amoutn of itchy trigger fingers around, they might shoot first ask questions latter... So, just a heads up ;3

Hmm.
1. Good thing there's more than one starsystem in Makay
2. I love how the human summit is barely started and bickering has already begun.
3. Where is Thirdfain?

I've also got some stuff with Harmony (Raxmei) to work out, Raxmei seems to have prolonged periods of inactivity.
