Type 212Bs? Improved, more endurance, quieter than the Type 212A.

Of course. I'm aiming for a total of 27 Yer Moms, allowing me to keep nine on constant patrol. That gives us a total of 1300 tomahawk-style missiles or around 500 heavier supersonic cruise missiles. Then we can put a base on the moon for a superlastchance strike (it's useless for first strike, since the missile will take days to arrive) and/or weaponize a near earth asteroid as a final "FUCK YOU" :P
That... is a lot of money to be spent... over a period of 14 years at least.

Oh yeah, remember how you were talking to me about cooperating in sub production? I'd like to build my own Type 212Bs too.

We will call this joint project, which is like BAM for submarines, the Large Unter-Boot Expansion project! LUBE!

By all means... We should think about the next generation of diesel subs as well. Something quieter.

The Type 212Bs can definitely fire any supercavitating torpedoes as well. :P Along with some Klubs.

I could probably join in with that though my sub production is probably going to be quite low compared to you two.

They should be able to fire MEGAFUCKER torpedoes!

Man, I love PeZook's creations for our subs. Buzzkillers, Killfuckers, Megafuckers! :D

Possibly. Let's work it over. It will take 3-4 years to work out one, though I have a few concepts on the drawing board.

I'm wondering now as well where you tested it, and how many models you've tested. Remember, you can't minaturize successfully without proof shots.

Plus, you then have to build the damnable things. Though I suppose in this world, we all have tons and tons of plutonium that we've been throwing into the ocean until we found out it made good bomb material.

Well, I am taking a cue from Stas. Maybe we won't officially deploy it till next year or the next. *shrug*

But we all have nuclear reactors, and that does speed things up.

MKSheppard wrote:Even the lowest of them [balloons] hung at 100,000 feet, though some were over 110,000 feet in the air.

If you want to reach those kinds of altitudes, and do it over a long enough period to make it reliable as a deep strike weapon; guess what? The balloons will have to be ENORMOUS. We're talking several million cubic feet of helium/hydrogen minimal.
What? 100,000 feet is 30 fucking kms. Shep, that's bog-standard for Soviet recon aerostates of the late XX century. That's even bog standard for NATO aerostates.

Yeah, we are talking about large-scale inflation, but guess what? For a stratoballoon with a volume of 160,000 cubic meters, it would be filled on the ground with just 5000-7000 cubic meters. As it rises to 25-30 km altitude, where pressure is just 19mm, the volume of gas will increase 30 TIMES.

So Norseman could compactly transport those balloons, and utilize them properly. TO think otherwise would be ridiculous - the US, France, Britain in the 1950s launched balloons with recon duties over the USSR, which were supposed to cruise at 30 km. Am I to presume Norseman would not have those?
MKSheppard wrote:This is a photograph of one such high altitude (125,000 ft) balloon being launched in Antartica in 1987. Clearly, this is not something that you can spam a lot of fast in the numbers that Norseman claims.
I thought he had been preparing for the contingency. I mean, why the fuck have freighters with balloons?
Most likely case is a couple of balloons get into the air; and then Shepistani Air Force comes and bombs/rockets/strafes the ship to oblivion before it can launch it's other 90 balloons.
No, Shep. If Astarian designers were even mildly competent, they would create proper weapons.
120 tons of agents in Phase One launched in total. About 60 tons or so impact in Astaria.
So, 60 tons?
100 balloons launched against Shepistan in total. There are to be 200 more balloons launched; but they're sunk on board the ships when the Shepistani Air Force shows up and bombs them into oblivion.
What? Shep, seriously. 2000 balloons is possible.
http://dkba.wbrush.com/?id_cat=1&id_cat ... element=71
Does that look really hard to you?

It's a 33 km altitude capable balloon with endurance of 9 days, volume of 130,000 cubic meters, lowest payload of 250 kg, and initial gas volume on earth 1950 cubic m. of hydrogen.

And you can mass-produce that shit; hell, Soviet synoptics used it in their everyday operations.
40 shot down with air defenses at very long ranges -- Hey guess what? Something made of mylar and having several million cubic feet of gas in it is gonna make a bitchin' radar reflector; and guess what? I have a very long ranged missile in the BOMARC; with a huge warhead that will be a hell of a lot more effective in the thin air up that high; and guess what? Balloons can't manouver, unlike a manned aircraft!
"Million" cubic feet? Shep, 130,000 around that. And yeah, they can't manuever. But if you down them, once their payload falls down and the altimeter functions, it releases a cloud of anthrax.

So, 50-60 tons of anthrax are still yours to deal with.
So I can shoot them down well before they reach Shepistan. However, doing this expends Shepistan's last BOMARC warstocks, pretty much. We're out of them now.
Yes, Shep, you can, but the anthrax cloud incoming from the balloons will kill your nation. Contamination on the order of 500,000 square kilometers is just the beginning.
See guys? This is why I keep my schemes remarkably simple and easy, such as using Submarines to spam heavy SRBMs and ALCMs onto Astaria. They can be launched fast, arrive fast, and carry heavy warloads.
No Shep, that's why you're totally wrong.
When you get into cute trickery like balloons, and you don't know what you're doing, it fucks your plans up.
If you don't know how much volume you need to actually do it, or what kind of balloons modern industry can mass-produce, yeah.

Shep, you're stuck in the year 1944. Sorry, but Norseman's attack, even if you down ALL of his balloons, will be very deadly since a cloud carrying 60 tons of anthrax will cover your territory.

My country has a few nuclear reactors itself so I have no problem in that department. We must get a firm secure infastucture for these to be built. The simple goal I think is to survive the Shep attack or at least in some state or another. I do not wish to attack him willfully.

I got confused with the aircraft but whats the real world equvilent to it?

That's nice. Now repeat that operation 2,000 times.

Why is it everyone doesn't fucking think through the implications?

You have to bring up the balloons and inflate them, you're limited by space limitations on the ship for operations as well as safety limitations -- for a mass balloon attack, you'll have to use hydrogen, helium would be too expensive for such a mass thing; and that means extra safety precautions.

To eluicidate it further:

This reminds me of the time that the Cebrowskites tried to insist that you could put a F-35 onto a 2,000 ton or so micro carrier; Stuart and company blew that idea out of the water by taking a F-35 outline and placing it over the proposed ship.

Let's assume a nice 200 meter long merchantman, with a beam of about 21 meters. At best you'll get six-seven launching pads on the merchantman. You can only bring up a balloon and launch it every x minutes, due to having to bring it from below decks, inflate it to a level where it's ready, and then release it.

Gets better. Since we're releasing balloons, guess what? You're at the mercy of the wind. You can't release them if the wind is unfavorable -- too much danger; so you have to time releases for when the wind is favorable.

That means a balloon launch will stretch out for a long period of time; and all the balloons will be a huge fucking radar target pointing to the ship that launched it.

We don't even need to attack it with the Shepistani Air Force!

About 1.5 hours into the operation, after a few dozen balloons have been launched; a BOMARC launched from Shepistan in a long range command guidance mode slams into the freighter in a terminal Mach 4 plus dive, and the freighter full of highly explosive and flammable hydrogen goes up in a mushroom cloud approximation.
Does that look really hard to you?
Hard? No. Time consuming, yes. And time is one thing not on the side of the Astarians.

The entire point of a concealed warship is to spam off it's weapons in a compressed time sequence, not to leisurely release the weapons, making it a huge neon target.
But if you down them, once their payload falls down and the altimeter functions, it releases a cloud of anthrax.
Not if I shoot them down at 600 nautical miles over the open ocean.

F-99F BOMARC: Long Range Heavy SAM. Designed to destroy enemy combat aircraft and missiles at ranges exceeding 600 nautical miles...
Yes, Shep, you can, but the anthrax cloud incoming from the balloons will kill your nation. Contamination on the order of 500,000 square kilometers is just the beginning.
How sad it will fall onto the ocean after being shot down at long range. Does everyone keep forgetting abotu BOMARC's absurd range? This is not some dinky 40 mile point defense SAM.
If you don't know how much volume you need to actually do it, or what kind of balloons modern industry can mass-produce, yeah.
See above. The TIMING of the attack makes it a highly vunerable mode of attack. It takes TIME to prep and launch each of those balloons, and due to their relatively huge size on the ground, you can't launch tons of them at once.
Sorry, but Norseman's attack, even if you down ALL of his balloons, will be very deadly since a cloud carrying 60 tons of anthrax will cover your territory.
I'll take a light dusting of the coastline versus a heavy dusting of my interior cities anyday.
