Let's take a look at the People's Republic of Canissia:
Zor wrote:The planet in question would be considered paradise by most people's standards. It has Terran ecology transplanted onto it and differs from earth geographically, instead of continents, it is a complex maze of seas and islands, most of which are tropical to temperate due to ocean currents and such. Technology level is basically that of modern day earth, with plenty of fossil fuels. The planet is populated with humans, which are basically a good solid mix of ethnic groups from all over earth with religion being done with one quarter being worshipers of moderate versions of Earth Religions that get along well enough with the rest being either atheists or agnostics.
They assume the title of King/Tsar/Imperator/Ceaser/Whatever, a constitutional monarch. You get a nice Palace in a capital. There is a parliament, but that handles internal affairs. You also have connection to Earth to see how things are going, and for a vacation if so you desire, although only you and your 25 relocated people are allowed to go between worlds with only the cloths on their backs and a backpack worth of stuff.
The size and prowess of your nation is based on your status and postcount. All nations have water barriers.
According to the OP, I get this:
5,001-20,000 regular posters, Senators and mods minimum-Tsardom
Total Land Area, 500,000 square kilometers:
This makes my country about the size of Spain (504,030 sq.Km).
Population: 30 million first world
Spain, by comparison, has 45,200,737 and a population density of 90 people per square kilometer. So we're comfy.
Military: 400,000 personnel
I'll divvy it up thusly:
Army: 100,000
2 Heavy Divisions: Heavy tracked vehicles for tanks, IFVs, SPGs, AAA, etc.
2 Medium Divisions: Wheeled vehicles, 8- 6- and 4-wheelers.
2 Light Divisions: Light infantry + some light wheeled vehicles; Airborne/Airmobile capable
Army Air Corps: 10,000
30 A-8 style CAS
30 A-10 style CAS
40 C-130
20 C-17 type Airborne transport.
Air Force: 80,000
300 Jet Fighters
--200 F-22s
--100 F-35 JSF Marine (V/STOL) versions
--5 Tankers
--4 AWACs
--50 C-17s as needed.
Navy: 100,000
10 Arleigh Burke-class Destroyers
50 Halifax Class Frigates
50 Pegasus-class Hydrofoils (10 Areligh-Burkes sacrificed)
20 modern Diesel submarines (1 modified for SEAL-team insertion).
Naval Air Arm:
10 P-3 Orion style anti-sub patrol
20 Anti-sub dirigibles with depth charges.
Navy SEALs for special ops: 60 SEALS.
Marines: 120,000
2 Medium Divisions: Wheeled vehicles, 8- 6- and 4-wheelers.
4 Light Divisions: Light infantry + some light wheeled vehicles; Amphibious capable
Marine Amphib Corps: (10 Halifax frigates sacrificed)
1 Tarawa type landing ship
9 Heavy Assault Landers (Hovercraft)
20 Riverine Patrol/Attack boats
Marine Air Corps: 5,000
30 Attack Helicopter (contra-rotating rotors a la Kamov Ka-50 style)
30 Transport helicopter (Jolly Green Giant style heavies).
Since we are all island nations, my Army is primarily home defense with limited deployment through airborne assault corps. The Navy and the Marines are the primary strike arms, with the Air Force in support. Since ICBMs are not given in the OP, I am going on the premise that such weapons are not a factor, at least to start with.
Defense philosophy:
Heavy and Light Army divisions will be dispersed in sectors throughout island of Canissia; ready to repel any assault. Faster Medium divisions will be based further inland, ready to serve as fire brigades to reinforce areas of intense activity.
Power Projection philosophy:
Canissia will primarily concern itself with watching over everything in range of its refueled strike aircraft. With Strategic-level bombers not included in the OP, this gives limited long-range (inter-continenetal) power projection capability. Marine & Navy strike arms will concern themselves with island defense and performing limited strikes on pinpoint locations as needed on nearby islands.
With the 'complex maze of seas and islands' described in the OP, large, heavy ships such as CVNs are seen as impractical. Smaller, faster, light attack and patrol boats are utilized instead for quick inter-island maneuver warfare.
-Able to produce enough food for export, with industry capable of producing large scale goods such as cars, modern arms industry and shipbuilding, GPD-$750,000,000,000 USD per year
With a GDP like this, I can easily upgrade weapons, aircraft, etc as needed.
Areas of special research:
UAVs, include long-range strategic reconnaissance and strike capability.
Combat robots for patrol and convoy escort.
Aerospace Program for launching GPS satellites.
EHAZ: Extreme High Altitude Zeppelin project for command/control and strategic overwatch.
Cruise missiles
--Willing to cooperate on these projects with allies. Will hit up the Mess members first.
I'll also put in the following: Law Enforcement
Police Force: Ordinary Civilian police with cars, etc, and SWAT teams in each city.
Coast Guard: Make more Pegasus hydrofoils and a few heavier Cutters for patrol & enforcement, plus harbor traffic control.
Each palace is also linked together with a central political web-forum thing for international diplomacy.
We'll probably spend the rest of our days on a BBS making up RARs!
