I personally think these massive defense buildups should have serious economic repercussions. If not simply deficit spending, something else, because otherwise it's absurd.

Well... I did suggest that my economy ought to take 1% contraction somewhere (or zero growth).... though I would point out that my expenditure this year is at most 20% more since I had that carrier under construction last year and I have far fewer warships under construction this year.phongn wrote:I personally thing these massive defense buildups should have serious economic repercussions. And I intend to decommission some ships soon.....

In 2009, PeZookia had financed 38.5 billion dollars of its budget with deficit spending, with a total spending on the level of 21.5% GDP. Poland does around 22% with a much higher yearly deficit and manages to have its economy grow at 5% annually (so far, anyways).phongn wrote:I personally think these massive defense buildups should have serious economic repercussions. I don't want 5%, though. Currently, PeZookia has a goal of 2% real growth, and bumping down inflation from 4% to around 1%. My defence spending is hardly runaway at the moment.

Yep. I'm still figuring how many to order, though. I'll definitely set aside the money in my 2010 defence budget.

Technically, Byzantium is pseudo socialist/capitalist. We have a full spread of banks and entrepreneurship. It's just that our health care and university education are co-pay, but progressive of course; how much one pays is pegged to his income level.PeZook wrote:Oh! Astaria has no deficit, partially because it has no one to loan from, and partially due to an old fashioned obsession with a balanced budget. This might slide a little in the next couple of years, due to the need for self-defence against various aggressive foreign powers.

Our education and health care are free. Of course, paying for all that is part of the reason why we can't spend outrageous sums on defence, but, well...as I outlined in my civil defence post, education is actually a major part of my civil defence system, so I guess it's a good investment

Education for us free up to pre-university. The reason being is that to hire the best professors and so forth, a socialist system would have made it pretty hard to retain them. Star Professors are pretty expensive to retain, and I didn't want them to head to Shroomania or some other place. But we are fairly generous with scholarships and all, so it helps mitigate a lot of the cost of entering university.PeZook wrote:Heh, in this case, PeZookia is far more socialist

And if all else fails, there's always to trip to CSR to the Technical University of Moscow (or whatever Stas has for equivalent).

Well, you'd have to make them sign good contracts and make sure to revise their pay regularly. And, of course, universities can charge for some services, like weekend courses or PhD studies etc.
I'm sure the system will start breaking down out of neglect in a generation or two, though

I hear in Europe, there are very few professorships, compared to the United States, and as a result, some people do postdocs for decades. In the end, many end up in Industry, or even finance. (let's just say, fewer will be going finance now, I think. ).
The United States is a lot more dynamic than that, and certainly a good reason why many European scientists are heading across the Atlantic.

So now I'm suddenly selling guns in the CFR... Well, I can't object much, it's probably what some intrepid traders would do, although it's definitely not a state-sanctioned business (not that that's gonna stop anyone). Still, the good General Helmut better remember that we helped save his hide, and we're none too pleased that he's still not restored civilian rule in his country either.

Feh. That's how it works: if a national leader comes to visit, a national leader goes to greet him (or, at the very least, meets with him later). It's just diplomatic etiquette. If you want to insult a nation, send an assistant deputy foreign minister to meet with their president and not bother showing up throughout the visit. War may not be guaranteed after that, but relations will sure as hell go sourKarmic Knight wrote: I have a very low opinion of myself, I wouldn't send a foreign minister to meet me.

Me neither. Astarians thought they could kidnap our citizen and get away with it like they always did. Not so.
The CSR's reaction to any violence against it's citizens is similar to that of Israel, except it's even more extreme.
Also, hardly anyone except the SNC so far knows about the operation against Astaria. Other nations have been informed at hour zero that due to the kidnapping and slavery of foreign citizens, the abomination known as Astaria was decided by the Supreme Soviet uneligible for having any sort of Navy.
But destroying the Astarian Navy alone could not be accomplished without destroying it's air defenses, at least their AWACS.
So that's what I did. Their radar network, Naval bases and AEW planes will be dust very shortly.
Given Astaria is a pariah state, and Naval traffic in the region is blocked by the CSR battlegroup currently, news of that attack will slip rather slowly.
Astarian TV, radio stations are also targets and have been taken out in the initial wave to disallow any communication on that basis.
