I'm with Simon_Jester with the randomization thing, upon reflection. Dice can be dragged out if both parties are feeling whimsical, but otherwise if the gods screw somebody, somebody else paid for it, is probably the best way to go.

How does everybody feel about unreliable mercenaries? Like if I hired some guys from the Formerly-Cordoban city states to hunt feral vampires on my border or something, should I get a discount for a probability that they'll turn on me for a higher payout? The less I pay, the easier it is to buy them off...

Orion Siege Companies are also available. More expensive than mercenaries, but waaaay better equipped and we aren't going to leave you for a better offer.

To some extent we can be flexible about that, but if an ordinary musket man is 1 point (as I believe I put in the rules), then a shitty spearman being about .25 might work, at a guess. I certainly wouldn't call anyone out over a crappy spearman worth that much.

I'd value them between 0.2 and 0.25 myself. That 0.05 is based on how easily they're expected to break, if they break easily go with the lower number.

Annnnd my OOB is up! Breakdown of Regiments and ships, a list of active Regiments and Battleships plus some Frigate and Sloop names, as well as a list and working description of the Empire's Sanctioned Powers.

Bonus cookie goes to those who spot the full 40K reference :)

Hmm, there are lots that are very close. I was half expecting some Word Bearers or World Eaters, but the one that's straight 40k would be the Iron Fists. Or at least that's the one I saw first if you slipped more in.

Imperial Fists is indeed the main one, though the Iron Warriors is another of the Legions. Imperial Fists is the main one though, being both the 7th Regiment and the 7th Legion. So you get a partial cookie.

I thought the Iron Warriors were one of them, but it sounded generic enough that I let it go. So good on for getting that in there.

Oddly enough, the Storm Walkers was an old name for the 40K Iron Hands, which is cool.

E_F, Sutherland or Nonsuch might have been a bit of a stretch for you guys. But i was expecting Renown as a Ship-of-the-line name. ;) Then again you picked some awesome real life names like Thunderer.

Yeah, I owe people an OoB and some story posts... shit.

I was going through my mental list of battleship names and unfortunately Renown came up as number 13. But yeah, generally real-life names (apart from Spirit of Orion obv, though that's a hold over from the last STGOD I was in where she was my flagship carrier).

I could always swap out Agamemnon for Renown though, since we don't really have an ancient-Greece analog. Yeah, I'll do that.

I should have another story post up tonight or tomorrow, detailing some of the dynamics of my government. This'll be the first real introduction to her Highness the Queen.

Following shortly after that should be an official response to Jub's raid. Nothing too major, but just to give a heads' up...

No worries, I should be back in the swing of things come tomorrow. Then I'll detail my raiding group's trip back home and see what other story ideas pop up.

I have the next five posts or so roughly planned out, or at least the basics. That should cover my initial response to you, introduce some new character stuff, and deal with the beginnings of setting up a new capitol, or so I hope.

After that it gets fuzzier, but probably negotiations with neighbours and some construction.

Long term, I have this idea for a civil war plot I'm toying with, with one of my people going nut job Dark Lord.

Well, I would say that unreliability would detract from a units' combat value, and hence should lessen its point cost.

Right, the degree of unreliability determines the discount. Anybody who pays a certain amount more can turn them on me immediately, without having to take the time to raise troops in or near my territory, not necessarily with the element of surprise, since we all know those Cordobans are tricky bastards, but definitely with the initiative. The down side is that somebody else can pay them the same percentage more to turn them on you.

Sorry that I'm behind on writing, also. This is the most stressful week of my year, and I've come to the realization that I need to do a lot more reading about Aztec history and Mexico to not sound like a dipshit here.

Back! An updated OOB is posted in the appropriate thread, and should be final barring math mistakes or anything I've done that's seriously nonsensical. Story post drafting is under way; no promises about the actual completion date, though. I'm working my way through the chunk of OOC things I missed, so if there was anything urgent anyone wanted to tell or ask me a PM is probably the way to go.

Finally finished reading the fiction thread and put something up. Everything up before mine is very entertaining, and I'm going to go ahead and climb onto the "not competing with S_J for word count" bandwagon right out of the gate. :D

For comedy, could we gave leylines that follow the existing 2015 rail lines?

Sure, it's funny, but does super high mojo along all the best shipping routes that everybody will find a way to exploit reflect what this setting is going for, in terms of aesthetic, time scale, etc? I'm not really invested either way, just asking.
