Nukistani E-4B NEACP

Sheppard watched the clock tick down on the ultimatum from within the command center.

Two minutes to go......

One minute now.

Thirty Seconds.

Ten Seconds.

Zero.

Plus Ten.

Plus Twenty.

Still no response from the MESS.

"Okay, that does it. We're at war. Have the senate sign the papers; and send the go signal for COPPER DOLPHIN."

The orders went out from the E-4B to the hundreds of dispersed bombers and to the ships at sea....

305th Bomb Group Forward Deployment Airfield, Saddamistan

The order clattered in from the laser printer, and the Group commander took a look at it, and gulped.

TO: ALL COMBAT UNITS OF STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND
FROM: CINCSAC

AS OF XXX HOURS ZULU, A STATE OF WAR EXISTS BETWEEN THE MASSIVE ENTANGLEMENT OF SURVIVALIST STATES (MESS) AND THE UNIFIED ATOMIC REPUBLIC (UAR) OF WHICH THE REPUBLIC OF SHEPNUKISTAN IS A MEMBER OF.

YOUR ORDERS ARE TO STRIKE ALL MESS NAVAL TARGETS NEARBY USING ALL MEANS AVAILABLE, INCLUDING SPECIAL WEAPONS.

GENERAL ATTACKS ON LAND TARGETS NOT AUTHORIZED, RPT NOT AUTHORIZED.

COMMANDERS' DISCRETION IS GIVEN HOWEVER TO ATTACK IMMEDIATE LAND-BASED OFFENSIVE UNITS, SUCH AS SAM SITES AND ANTI SHIP MISSILE BATTERIES IF THEY FIRE UPON YOUR UNITS. USE THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF FORCE TO DESTROY THOSE TARGETS.

"Get them into the air, damn it!"

With a howl of engines, the RB-1Ds began to taxi down the airfield, and took off in ten second intervals.

*All around Vulpesia these messages are repeated on Computer Screens, TVs and Radios. "All Vulpesians, Evacuate to bunkers and villages. Retreat to the forests and caves. Try to survive as long as you can."

Wesley had retreated to the parlimentary bunker as well as most of the members of the Vulpesian Parliment had retreated to the punker 300 miles away from Nova Seattlum. Wes looked outside and said, "Please, don't let this be the end.".

The Bear Republic:

situation, heavily damaged Shep/UAR ship did take advantage of our "Civlian Sanctuary" proclamation, they even paid the harbourmaster extra for temporary Republic Citizenship, so that they could return to their home port unmolested.

ok, did they buy anything? (umm lets see, enough Soma to knock an army out, a few thousand Shroomstations along with copies of "Smashface", "Murder, Death Kill", "Air Pirates of the Central Sea", and "Libertopia Online", also more MESS manufactured Denim jeans and Lonestar tobbacco then you can shake a stick at.)

good, it will become impossible for them to maintain total war footing once the black market creeps in. Those Shroomstations will also allow them to access the encrypted transmissions on the overall internet system, thus bypassing government censors.

Wait, shroomstations aren't designed to do that?

They are once the Pentat started refurbishing them locally.

meanwhile people continued to arrive in small groups hoping to get out of the conflict and return home once it was safe. The Republic began shipping out to anyone that would accept their goods.

Deep below Minas Morgûl
a supercollider project continued ahead, strange no one had noticed with all the public construction of special insulated labs, testing centers, and miles and miles of underground halls connecting them, that the BR hadn't exported a single one of their super computers that they had manufactured since 2008, nor did anyone notice the fiberoptic links between Barad-dûr and Minas Morgûl, The republic's extensive recovery from the natural disasters had been the excuse given for widespread fiberoptic connection, the reality was, that the Republic's computer experts were now dispursed all around the world, while the Republic began sifting thrugh information.

They had suspected that OMSK's space dominance was just a cover for some sort of space weapon platform. though since it hadn't been activated yet, they couldn't confirm. However, enough hints and data traps had been laid that they felt resonably comfortable that once this system was activated, they would be able to infiltrate it. Right now in the depths hackers were playing a simulation of what they thought the old OMSK system would be like. They had coined the system "Dalek"

Entertainment News:
in order to defuse the tense situation, the Emporer has commanded that the studios of the Republic produce a number of science fiction films involving Giant monsters, peace loving aliens, giant robots, and giant monsters fighting giant sentient bioweapons. How this will defuse the current tension is unknown

CIVIL DEFENSE ANNOUNCEMENT

Nuclear attack by Shepnukistan and Saddamistan likely. Report to subway shelters where possible; if you live in an area where shelters are not available, congregate in hardened public buildings. Follow the instructions of your Block Captains; all Militia units are activated. Standing orders are for Case Orange.

"Well, that's that," Arik said. He'd thought about telling his people to evacuate and disperse among the countryside; the mountains, campgrounds, the central desert and plains-- the "take to the hills" approach-- but he desisted. He didn't want traffic jams on open roads, making millions of civilians into easy targets for the picking by Shep's nukes.

"What we need to do is encourage people in the countryside and in the suburbs to build their own bomb shelters," he said, "And building codes should have hardened core rooms in their centers for apartments... I just never thought it would come to this, but I should have known better," he said, slumping in his seat.

"They are like children," Samira comforted, "They act up, and when someone pushes them back they flail and say it isn't their fault... you don't think like they do, so you couldn't really see this coming. That's not really something to be ashamed of."

"Nuclear temper tantrums," Arik muttered, a wry smile on his mouth.

FLASH FLASH FLASH

TO: CJTF-4

MULTIPLE HIGH HEAT SIGNATURES IDENTIFIED IN SADDAMISTAN. ANALYSIS INDICATES BOMBER TAKEOFF.

---

Across CJTF-4, carriers launched fighter patrols into the loose, extended formations required of nuclear fighting. Hundreds of planes lept into the air, most of them armed largely with air to air missiles. An exception was the Tian Xia F-14s from the TXS Vindictive. Instead of carrying half a dozen AMRAAMs, they were armed with what were euphemistically named "special weapons." Specifically, nuclear versions of the air-launched ATACMS missile. One was carried on each F-14, with another pair of AMRAAMs on the wing glove pylons.

Indhopal sent their ambassador in Shepnukistan to find out exactly what his intentions towards Indhopal were. He was instructed to be Unrelenting until he got an answer, and say repeatedly that Indhopal had remained neutral and had no offensive weapons to threaten anybody. Messages were also sent off Sadaamistan, though a response wasn't expected from him.

For good measure Ambassadors inside the MESS and FUN asked for official word for how they viewed Indhopal.

MESSAGE TO ALL MARITIME SELF-DEFENSE FORCES, GROUND SELF-DEFENSE FORCES AND CIVILIAN MILITIA

At this time we believe that there currently is a state of war existing between the Massive Entanglement of Survivalist States (MESS) and the Unified Atomic Republic (UAR) due to the elapsed deadline with no public word of continuing discussion. As such the Qudlivun Free State will remain guarded but we will not mobilize for any offensive strikes. The previously stated policy in regards to non-civilian UAR traffic remains in effect. We do not expect either side to breach our territorial waters or airspace. At this time we will not, repeat not, be evacuating the cities or otherwise preparing for invasion outside of current measures. Only contact or engage non-civilian UAR targets if they breach territorial waters or airspace.

Canissian Naval Operations Command

"Well, that's the word," the Admiral said, "I don't know how serious they are about sinking everything we have, but let's cut 'em loose."
"The nukes, sir?" the operations chief asked, more than a little nervous at the thought.

"Remember that special load we picked up from the Windward Islands a few months ago?" the Admiral asked. "That stuff."
"But... won't that make things... worse? It'll be seen as an escalation."

"An escalation to what, exactly?" the Admiral asked. "We're at nuclear war because of those madmen. Where shall we go from here?"

"Yes, sir."

=========================================

Southern Seas Command

The Navy had surged from Port Serenity-- if the Nuclear Nutjob Club was right, and they intended to sink every piece of floating stock the MESS had, they weren't going to drag the Gottland civilians into it. The command came across the printers to the Admiral on board the Atlantica, the order he had not fully expected.

"Um..." he said, re-reading it. "We're to launch all of our... secondaries," he said. He handed it to the XO to confirm. "We're to keep our own stocks of nukes in reserve."
"In reserve," the XO mumbled, "What the hell? If we're sunk, we can't launch 'em. I say we cork 'em off."

"Orders are for the secondaries. His Majesty has something special in mind for them, I guess."
"The Windward Isle package?" the XO asked. "I thought that was a, umm, revenge type thing for a post-nuke follow-up."

"Well, now the Boss thinks it's our lead foot."

They regarded it in silence for a moment, and finally dug their keys out.

============================================

Central Seas Fleet

The fleet had long ago left the Shinra Republic, and their 'special' TLAMS had already cleared the tubes. The rockets took off, arcing a beautiful, fiery trace across the sky, headed towards Saddeamistan, doing their best to fly low, avoid detection, and still carry out their pre-planned trajectories.

The rockets flew low, trading fuel for another advantage-- unexpectedness. The programmers knew that Canissia's few special TLAMS would be used in the event of a WMD exchange; if the rockets flew high they'd be easily targeted no matter where they were eventually headed towards. Flying low, and away from all the military installations and population centers --where the air defenses were clustered-- their unusual courses would be difficult to intercept.

True, they'd hit only a little ways inside their target countries-- both Saddamistan and Shepnukistan-- and there were only a few of the special, secondary missiles made. But a few was all that was needed.

THe missiles headed not towards factories, cities, bases, or encampments or ports-- they headed towards...open fields; pasturelands, a handful of small farm collectives and feedlots.

...and detonated, killing at most a few head of cattle, pigs, sheep, and other farm animals.

Canissia's attack appeared to be a major botch job. King Arik's heart just wasn't in nuking, he wanted to send a message to back off... would it work?

========================================

All Fleet Commands

Evasive maneuvers started, and anti-sub patrols flew nonstop. Would it be nuclear torpedoes from subs, or air-based attacks? The fleets didn't want to cluster up, with the threat of nuclear attack it would be mass suicide-- but they still wanted the protective umbrella of the destroyers' and frigates' air defenses. Everyone waited, on full alert, in NBC gear with hoses and atropine & topham chloride ready...

Northern Canissia; Tauron Province

The trains rolled to a stop, and unlimbered their loads. Fire & Move, fire & move... hyper long-range guns, provided from the Red Technocracy, had been rolling on the northern rail lines for over a month.

With a 230 kg projectile, which is capable of housing a 300 kt nuke and rocket propellant, we will get the range of the SM-33 gun from 127 km to 200 km. That is enough to strike at targets in Shep's land from Canissian north-eastern top.

With a ROF of over 3 shots per minute, in the first half-hour, a railway battery of 10 such guns could totally raze Shepnukistan's coastal cities.

Image

But it wasn't Shep's cities that were targeted-- it was, again, the pastures and fields, where the biggest casualties were among livestock more than people.

The People's Republic of Canissia was making a point.

UKB Space Command
Watch floor 2000 UT, January 1st 2011
Dozens of babbling voices, ringing phones sounded in the background, however in the sound was mostly muted here in on the Watch floor, proper, sitting in the middle of the room was a projection of all satellite traffic in the world. Most of it was tracked via radar on mountains in the UKB. Backup arrays had been built several other countries. Also the Royal Radar birds had the ability to side-scan and help fill in the picture. For non-UKB satellites it was not quite real time, but it was close enough. A dozen people watched various parts of the sky and tracked up to six different satellites. The blue UKB dots seemed to be everywhere, broken only by the tiny yellow dots of IRT satellites, green Tian Xian GEO satelllites and White Lonestar birds. All that was going to change however.

The door crashed open, the lead Space Command Officer marched in shouting as he came."That's it! We got the word, War is on gentlemen, Per national command authority flush them, flush them all"

The lean old man behind the center desk stared at the Officer and asked simple "What targeting plan?"

"Baker One-Zeta" the Officer said.
The old man grunted, nodded to his subordinates, and said simply, "Well, that's a few billion down the toilet, we are running on borrowed time now."
-------------------------------------------------------
HISCO Orbitals
As dozens of spacecraft swept outside the land-based detection range panels began opening on their sides, dozens of arrow-like objects silently glided out from the mostly hollow insides of the satellites, some were massed only half a ton, while others were over thirty tons.

Two satellites tossed out over one hundred and twenty small blunt shaped objects. Even this smallest of weapons had the equivalent destructive power of three hundred and forty tons of TNT, some of the medium ones has over a hundred and twenty thousand tons of destructive power. But the largest by far, the "Umpires" as they were named had close to thirty million tons of explosive force, when they hit land they would make a crate over a kilometer and a half deep and over four kilometers wide as the tungsten bar converted it's kinetic energy directly into the earth.

It has been estimated that even a bunker complex five miles under the earth would be annihilated by a direct Umpire KKV hit. And yet a Umpire could be even more destructive if fired at water, any ships within five miles of a strike would be destructed by the massive wave that would result from the strike. The analysis were divided on how far this hell-wave would spread before losing it's power. Deep water five miles would be pushing it, but in less than two hundred meters of water their was talk of a nine mile destruction zone with damage out to eighteen.

They spread themselves out, the small station keeping thrusts slowly pushing them into wildly scattered orbits, five miles high and two miles deep the KKV's spread out, each having a minimum of a mile of separation from it's nearest fellow. The pattered was not random, the targetting order, Baker one called for a broad base pattern with emphesis on the out-regions of the planet. Close to eight hundred new contacts appear in the sky and began causing some-what strained reactions in other countries.

The engineers had done their job well, no one spot on the planet was out of line of sight of at least ten Goal-Keepers, two Referee's or one Umpire at any time. And with twenty minutes warning that could be eighty Goal-Keepers, twenty Referee's and Four Umpire's.

And that did not even count the smaller half ton Arbiters, dropping to 1340 KM orbits this fast reaction KKV's spread themselves out into a vast net each one to ensure that every spot on the populated planet could be reached by at least four of them at any one time.
--------------------
The decision had been made, with the launching of the KKV's into the open the decision loop had been cut to just under two minutes. Come what may, the UKB was ready.

Well?

Something's happening, we aren't not sure what's going on, very high speed, laser, so at the angle our communication birds in the Stratusphere are at we're not getting but a couple of bits as noise, no idea what the crypt is. However we can just hope we aren't on the target list.

Well any good news?

Well if we had some plasma weapons, or something?

how about the coil gun launcher?

What? do you think we could cancel out some projectile or missile by launching something like shotguns into the air? not fuckin likely.

E-4B NEACP

"So, give me the rundown on what happened," asked President Sheppard.

"Sir, as we expected, the Canissians tried a cruise missile attack. Most of them were shot down by our air defenses as they flew over the deception areas."

"God bless Stuart Slade," muttered Sheppard.

Over the last couple of years, tens of thousands of little cross-radar reflectors had been placed on power lines all across Shepnukistan, sealed within orange reflectors that were there ostensibly to protect civilian light aircraft.

The same thing had been done with key crucial valleys and bodies of water that Shepnukistani analysts had identified as likely TERCOM landmarks. With the terrain databases in key areas totally off; the cruise missiles had no choice but to follow their programming to "clear" hills where there weren't any; skylighting them against the horizon for Shepnukistani air defenses.

"Unfortunately, at least one managed to reach it's target."

"Where'd we get hit, and what yield?"

"Um, Curtis LeMay National Forest, looks like a hundred to one twenty kiloton yield."

Suddenly, an aide burst in.

"Sir; reports coming in of shells striking coastal nature preserves."

"What the fuck?" muttered Sheppard, before he regained his composure and continued.

"The LeMay Forest is a bit inland, and nowhere near any meaningful military target, and why the christ are they bombing my coastal nature preserves?!? Get me the PURPLE HAMMER folder," replied Sheppard.

Flipping open the PURPLE HAMMER folder after being handed it, Sheppard rapidly found what he was looking for.

"We'll go with the STRONG HYDRA option. Destruction of air bases. Task it to the land attack battalions. Also task the hundredth and one oh second Blackbeard battalions for clearance of the seas on any targets they find. Give the 35th Fighter Group and the 379th Bomb Group the job of those guns. I assume by now you've got a track on where they're firing from."

"Yessir."

From the E-4B, the messages radiated forth.

Along the Nukistani Coastline Bordering Canissia

Taking in their orders, the officers and men manning the battalions prepared their weapons for launch; and within minutes, the launches began.

First to fly out of their launchers werethe MGM-174E/F Fastbeards, Mach 1.3 land attack variants of the Blackbeard; with alternatively 400 kg or 200 x 1.5 kg cluster bomblet warheads. With their slower speeds, they had to be launched well before the newer weapons.

Minutes later, the MGM-174H/J Super Fastbeards, Mach 2 land attack variants with 600 kg or 330 x 1.5 kg cluster bomblet warheads began erupting from their launchers.

About a hundred Fastbeards and two hundred seventy Super Fastbeards were en route to their targets in Canissa; major air bases. Due to the short distances, it didn't take long for them to arrive.

Despite Canissia's air defenses, namely, two regiments of F-22s orbiting overhead, the distance closed too fast for more than a couple of quick snapshots with AIM-9Xs and AIM-120s, downing at best about sixty to seventy missiles before they began to reach their targets.

[OOC I checked your nation post in the reference thread, and the only air defenses I could find for you were a bunch of humvees with stingers. And the distance between my coastline and yours is about 100~ km, which is only 2.4 minutes at Mach 2. Not a lot of time for an IADS to respond.]

RAF Z-001 Location (CLASSIFIED)

"What's the latest?" asked Arik.

"Heavy damage to our airfields. The real problem is coming from those damn bomblets that got scattered across the runways; we're tasking clearance teams to them, but the damn things are ungodly powerful and on incredibly sensitive anti-tamper fuzes. We think they used the same high explosives used in nuclear weapons -- there's no other explanation for their unusual strength."

"No nuclear explosions?"

"No sir."

"What the hell? That's not like Shep."

35th Fighter Group -- 60,000 feet over the Shepnukistani Shoreline, Approaching Canissia

The seventy F-22s of the 35th FG approached the Canissian coastline in a loose spread out formation, to prevent nuclear air-to-airs from taking them all out.

"Looks like we got at least a reinforced fighter group up there," rasped Major Chuck Larry of the 35th, grunting against the extra effort of breathing while the F-22's pilot's suit was inflated to act as a partial pressure for operations above 55,000 feet.

"Three Seventy Ninth, we'll keep them off your backs while you deal with those guns."

"Good luck. We appreciate it," replied Colonel Kozlowski, the 379th's Commander.

As the superfighters began to engage each other in the rarified air up high, the bombers of the 379th dove for the deck; their wings sweeping back fully as their altitudes decreased and their airspeeds increased.

While the APB-3s of the B-1Cs weren't as good as the ASG-35s carried by the RB-1Ds; they were still good enough to pick up the rail lines on the ground; and given that they had gotten a rough grid set from command on where the guns were firing from, it wasn't hard to find them, with their huge radar returns.

"Weps, got a set up on them?"

"Got one, linking to the weapons now."

"Shit, SAM radars locking on to us!" cried the Deso (Defensive Systems Operator). "Jamming them!"

Moment's later, the shout of "Bombs Away!" came as the Mk 82 JDAMs began to fall from the weapons bays. Despite there being no real GPS system on this world that the Nukistani military really trusted; JDAMs still had a secondary inertial guidance system, and it was through that, the glide slope data had been input.

The moment the last bombs were away, Kozlowski put the big bomber into a steep climb, which was much easier with much of the weight now gone; taking advantage of their energy to zoom climb back up to safe altitudes.

All of the bombers made it; except for two, which were hit by SAMs, their jammers and manouvers hadn't been enough to outfox the deadly missiles.

[OOC; 5% loss rate on this mission, about right for your defended target, etc etc; bad if you're flying conventional, but okay if it's nuclear]

Below, the JDAMs continued to fall; some were picked off by SAMs, their ballistic trajectory being easy compared to hitting a high flying, manouvering bomber.

But enough survived to blanket the gun batteries with over 2,000 five hundred pound bombs; exploding in a precise ballet of interlocking blast and fragmentation areas. (35 bombers times 80 bombs each).

[OOC; I assume Coyote isn't stupid, and had his gun batteries spaced out several miles, etc apart; so that a single nuke couldn't take them out; but I'm also assuming my bomber crews were spread out enough to attack several discrete target points with at least two planes; also, I assumed that since they were MESS provided nuclear assets; they'd be tasked with MESS supplied air defenses; to protect them]

the die has been cast, repeat the die has been cast.

rodger, preparing to take in a lot of refugees before this is over, lets try and keep food production up, how are the green houses and other agricultural facilities may not be able to handle this all, we expect starvation and disease will be the primary killers.

Fallout is going to be a bitch though, good thing that we have enough fresh topsoil to fix things for us hopefully....

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

[OOC, I'm even more confused now; and secondly, your shells don't make sense -- The biggest nuclear shell ever made, the special 16" MK 23 rounds for the Iowas weighed 1,900 pounds and had a yield of 15 to 20 kilotons; and now you're saying you've got 500 pound shells which have 300 kt yields? 50-60 kt is more realistic for a nuke that has to fit within an artillery shell, and survive accelerations of hundreds of gravities, given advances in nuclear tech since the fifties]

Off Astoria, military airport

The heavy An-225, the old Air Force Unit 01 Mobile Command Post, touched down on the wet landing stripe. Heavy rain complicated the landing, but thankfully all went well. Fuel was low; but the reasons to land here were not mere refuel necessity.

The doors opened, and the Secretary General with his wife stepped out.

- We'll refuel that plane, sir, - spoke one of the Gen Sec's advisors, the trusted Mr. Putin.

- Welcome to Pezookia. We are glad you decided to attend the Conference despite a time of war, - spoke a military official in a small, tent-covered jeep. - We will transport you to a designated safe facility for the duration of your stay.

- Thank you. Having a conference - even during a great war - is not uncommon. I hope other nation's leaders follow our lead, - spoke the Gen Sec, closing his umbrella and leading Ania into the car.

The airstripe was desolate, only the siren noise disrupted the suddenly empty, like-abandoned huge military facility.

- Uneasy times, eh, - noted the Red Technocracy's leader, looking through the wet glass.

A little bit before Stas landed

Paul was sitting in the large SUV, racing through the empty streets towards the outskirts of the city. Plenty of people still remained in the capital, but everyone was trying to evacuate as fast as possible. Still, you could easily see broken store windows and burned-out cars littering the streets.

Paul was sulking and solemn, thinking and re-thinking every last move he made during the last three years. The tally seemed about even, though he had to admit - it was the result which mattered.

"Goddammit!", he shouted suddendly, "Fuck this. I'm not going to cower in a mountian hideous and wait for death to come for us."

The driver raised an eyebrow, as did his BOR bodyguards.

"Turn this thing around. I need a long-ranged radio!"

Fifteen minutes later, Astoria International, military terminal

There was nobody inside the terminal - no military personell, guards or civilians, nobody.

Nobody except three privates disassembling the terminal's long-range transmitter.

"Stop that! We need to use that radio!", Paul shouted, running through the empty hall. The privates, already scared and working as fast as they could for fear of nuclear attack, stopped and gawked.

"Your highness! I...we...we got orders to disable the transmitter and..."

"Get it online, right now!"

"Uh...yes sire!"

Both of them turned around and ran, carefully nestling all the delicate parts. They started working furiously, with the ever-present threat of nuclear hellfire hanging over their heads.

The King was pacing around the place, while his bodyguards attempted to talk to somebody on their portable radios.

"Did it do nuclear? Did it go nuclear, I have to know!"

"I don't know, goddammit!", the BOR officer was just as nervous as anybody else, "Somebody just told me there are cruise missiles in the air, and bombers....I don't know, nobody announced a detonation. And it doesn't seem PeZookia was hit by anything yet."

"Sire! The transmitter is up!", the private shouted, "It's working, but we have no codebooks or digital encryption!"

"It doesn't matter"

*ten minutes later*
---PRIORITY MESSAGE TO ALL RECEIVERS ; PRIORITY MESSAGE TO ALL RECEIVERS---

PEZOOKIA WILLING TO MAKE MAJOR CONCESSIONS IN EXCHANGE FOR PEACE CONFERENCE AND CEASEFIRE ; SCRAPPING OF BLACKBEARD BATTERIES AND DISMANTLING OF FACTORY OFFERED FOR TEMPORARY CEASEFIRE ANF CONFERENCE BETWEEN UAR, MESS AND FUN.

THIS IS AN OPEN-TEXT MESSAGE ; NO OTHER CHANNEL WAS AVAILABLE FOR CONTACT. TO ALL RECIPIENTS, PEZOOKIA WISHES TO OFFER MAJOR CONCESSIONS IN EXCHANGE FOR UAR PEACE TALKS.
The transmission was not particularly strong, and not everybody would receive it ; Plenty of people did, however, especially those with sophisticated communications equipment.

The message would loop continuously. King Paul sat down and bit his nails. One last desperate attempt at peace. It had to work.

An hour later

"Sire? A Red Technocracy AN-225 is approaching for landing", said a military officer brough here from the airfield shelter

"I hope it's Stas. And I hope he's not going to be irritated by me."

The entire party watched the giant airplane land and the General Secretary walk out toward a waiting jeep. A hastily assembled fuel crew began to refuel the giant, somewhat clumsily. In ten minutes, the general secretary and his wife were brought to the military terminal.

"Hi, Stas. Apologies for the spartan welcome, the cities were evacuated."

Stad looked around. The terminal was not particularly hardened against nuclear attack.

The King continued: "Well, I suggest we go to the royal palace. All the good comms gear is there. Alternatively, we run this from your airplane."

Imperial Chronicles

An order went out to send most of the scientists and their families to the Bear Republic, though some remained in Byzantium working deep underground.

When the message from PeZookia came, the Emperor and his advisers travelled underground via rail to the underground airfield. The Emperor boarded the An-225 that was specially prepared and sheided from EMP and coated with some measure of radar absorbing paint. Flying out with an escort of 6 fighters and a Il-96 that was secretly refitted as a fuel tanker, the small group of airplanes headed for PeZookia.

Colin: Come on people we need some decent peace talks now.
Who ever can pull this off is going to be a hero.

Q:"You know your talking to your self again"

colin: yeah I do that, usually I don't expect anyone to answer me.

Q: well you savages are on your own, this is ending pretty much how I planned it.

Colin: don't be so happy, there's a few things you've missed.

[OOC: I would have liked to get the still unfinished tsunami post in first, but this is more important. Ah well.]

Cabinet Meeting, Presidential Palace, Manila, Adrianpolis

"Aw shit, we're fucking fucked." The Presidente's tone of voice would have suggested something mundane, like the a game of ultimate frisbee having to be cancelled due to rain. Reality was far more grim, as a member of the MESS, and proud host to a large number of MESS assets including fighters, tankers, AWACS aircraft, and several airborne units, Adrianpolis was probably near the top of the list of targets for the former Saddamistan's impressive arsenal of chemical and biological weapons, as well as its slightly less impressive arsenal of atomics. There was also Shepnukistan, which had a considerably more impressive stash of devices, but those were mostly aimed at other MESS members. The operative word being "mostly". Apparent concern not withstanding, the Presidente's words were correct, they were fucking fucked. The only question now was how to minimize the damage.

"Isabela, what's the status of our armed forces?"

"I'm Alberto today, sir." The Minister of Defence, Alberto Gutierrez, had a cross-dressing habit which the Presidente allowed him, even encouraged some said, to indulge in while working. The entire cabinet was glad that today, out of all days, 'the Queen' had decided to wear pants, that is except for Hadrianvs, who actually looked disappointed.

"Alberto then, report."

"We are still on high alert, you never cancelled it. Most of our reserves are tied-up in tsunami relief, but the main forces remain ready to mobilize at a moment's notice. A considerable part of our air assets are airborne, and those that aren't are on launch alert. The Patriot batteries are all deployed and ready to fire. The only problem is our navy, a considerable part of it is tied-up in disaster relief, but our missile cruisers and their escorts aren't."

"So, as good as can be expected. Which as it happens, is not good enough. If the United Atomic Republic was threatening to invade us I would tell them to bring it on, they aren't, they are threatening to wipe off us the fucking map. Oh sure, they say that their attacks are limited to only naval assets, which is probably true, but some moron is going to escalate and next thing we know Shep's bombers are on the Grand Tour. Ladies and gentlemen, I put forth the opinion that being part of the MESS got us into this mess and that staying in the MESS is suicide."

A moment of silence, then pandemonium. People started shouting, outrage, shock, and then other joined the cacophony trying to shout the first group down. The Presidente didn't know what they were saying, nor did he much care, nobody ever said anything important while yelling angrily. Waved his hand and loudly commaned, "Silence!" All sound died down in a couple of seconds.

"Umberto," he adressed the Minister of Interior, "what is your objection?"

"You are selling us out to those warmongering mad men! We need to stick with our allies and stand strong and united against them, not cower like dogs upon the sight of a larger specimen. Oh sure, we may escape destruction now, but what of tomorrow? What of the future?"

"We have no choice, I cannot allow this nation to be put under a deluge of weapons of mass destruction. If that means being a coward, then so be it. Self-preservation over-rules all other concerns, and self-preservation dictates that we bail on the MESS. Besides, I do have plans for the future," Hadrianvs smiled, "I have no intention to declare neutrality in this dispute."

"What!? Are you insane! You say that you cannot allow us to be subjected to weapons of mass destruction and then say you will become the enemy of a different ."

"Nuclear strike plans are not made-up on the fly. They will not be expecting to have to use devices against one of their own, and even if they do it doesn't make sense for them to attack us. Adrianpolis cannot attack them, it can only destroy what is conveniently already here, and nukes will not save those assets. Furthermore, any device they use against us is one less device used against the UAR, which, unlike us, does have retaliatory capability. In any case, if they do employ their atomic bombs against us, you can rest assured that Shep will return the favour. That is one of the things that turning coat buys us."

"Why don't you give Sheppard free blow jobs while you're at it?" He said bitterly.

"Ah, an exellent idea. I'll tell him that you have volunteered yourself to be his bitch, as a gesture of good will on our part."

Umberto threw his hands up in the air and then slumped back in his chair. He couldn't quite tell if it had been a joke or not, but it didn't matter, he was finished anyway. After a few moments he got up and, without excusing himself, left the room.

"Pity to lose him, he is really very good when he is dealing with his area of expertise. Ah well, Alberto? I want to seize, capture, or destroy as much shit as possible, what's the situation, and what our options?"

"Yes sir. There are several airborne units stationed in various places in Adrianpolis. They're all light infantry, if they don't surrender our armoured regiments should have no trouble dealing with them. Unfortunately most of their air assets are already airborne, we should just get our air superiority fighters airborne as well and prepare them to attack at a moments notice, we are at war, it's only expected that we do so.

MESS ships could pose a problem there are a lot of them in the area. The ones sitting at port might be possible to seize by bum-rushing them with infantry from both the Marina and Ejercito, but the ones are going to have to be mostly sunk. We may, however, be able to capture the Victoria. It has been helping us with tsunami relief, and as a consequence a lot of our warships are in its immediate vicinity. It will take a longer than other ships to switch from humanitarian vessel to war machine, they've been using it as a 'floating city' in the disaster area, you see. We could destroy the escorts in the surprise attack and then threaten the Victoria at cannon point. If they don't surrender in a manner to our liking, we could have have the thing on fire and sinking in moments."

"Sir, some of our people are aboard those ships," an aide spoke up. "The Tian Xia carrier must have hundreds, maybe thousands, of them aboard."

"I don't give a fuck if my own mother is onboard," it was the Presidente. "That ship's too dangerous to treat with kid gloves, if they so much as sneeze in a threatening manner I want the deck raked with fire until they can't launch a god dammed dingy boat from it. Alberto, don't just cover it with cannon, have several attack choppers keep an eye on it at all times. As for the rest of our fleet, deploy as you must."

"Very well sir."

"Okay then we're done here, make preparations and disperse to the secondary command centes, quickly, time is of the essence. One more thing, though. I want a statement prepared to be released internationally the moment just before we start shooting."

>>>MESSAGE FROM ADRIANPOLIS TO ALL NATIONAL ENTITIES<<<
AFTER CAREFULLY CONSIDERING THE BALANCE OF POWER, PRIMARILY THE PART WERE WE CAN DO JACK AND SHIT ABOUT SADDAMISTAN RAINING BIOCHEMICAL DEATH UPON US, ADRIANPOLIS IS RESIGNING FROM THE M.E.S.S., EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY AND BACKDATED TO TWO DAYS AGO. ALL M.E.S.S FORCES HAVE 24 HOURS TO REMOVE THEMSELVES FROM OUR TERRITORY.

IN LIGHT OF THE M.E.S.S.'S FAILURE TO MEET THE DEADLINE, AS WELL AS THE SIMPLE STRATEGIC OBSERVATION THAT SIDING WITH THE UAR IS IN OUR NATIONAL INTEREST, A STATE OF WAR NOW EXISTS BETWEEN THE M.E.S.S. AND ADRIANPOLIS.
