Okay, I guess Coilerburg isn't going to sound like an awesome strategically important place for the UAR in a short while :D

Keeping your people in check with terror only works when you keep them inside your borders.

Not really. Turd World Nations generally have very large proportions of their GDP in their capital cities; which means that a nice nuclear sneeze on the city wipes out the country's economy pretty much.

Weren't those things abandoned because there was no practical way to shield the reactor sufficiently?

Shep, you're a psycho. I wonder why your own people haven't taken up arms against you - horse-steroidified Garner would be a better alternative to your insanity, in all honesty.

Technology has advanced since the 1950s, and what really doomed them was the special requirements for operating them, which the UAR does not care a whit about.

Maybe because I've been putting drugs into the ShepCola? :P

Seriously, because Shepnukistanis are a secretive, xenophobic group of people who hate dem damn furriners and like Freedomshepmerica!

If they're like the other secretive xenophobic group of people who hate furriners, they will only be loyal untill they start seeing their own bloated lifestyles suffer.

For example, I don't know, because of a massive civil war? :P

Well the Diocese was sending out a BTR-90 to snatch them, and probably anything else they could get from the wreck.

Actually it strikes me that BTR-90 crew could be vital to the investigation regarding the shootdown! Hmm, they're quite important. Hopefully they survived.

Also, Alexander and ProTec also went out to look for them, IIRC. So it depends on who found them first I think.
I might not have given the Diocese NBC proofed BTR-90s. And... well, it depends what's the time game between detonation and the firing of tthe SAM.

PeZook, we are evacuating citizens from Magalia(which got nuked), to the airport in Freetown, where LSRAF C-130Js have arrived to evacuate.

We are also flying out injured personnel to the Jim Bowie, which, as a LHD, has a large medical ward.

You know what that is, Coiler? That is very damn close to using OOC information in hindsight to your benefit.

PeZook may have decided to be cool about it this time. But if I were you, I wouldn't make a habit of that. It gets old damn quick.

I wanted to have a touch of a personal story in the game...rather than treating the UAR as a monolithic block of faceless Evil Zombies full of unflinchingly loyal people...plus, I love spy games.

You could've at least written up an exciting action-filed post about how your awesome spy dudes foiled the operation, Coiler :P

Makes sense. Besides even with North Korea level brainwashing there are still people who try to jump the border, after all.

There's a limit to how much that brainwashing can do before people wake up to the facts of what's going on. If anything his continuing use of the Neverhood as a test site for his nuclear weapons is going to cause problems even amongst nominal loyalists; there's no reason the Neverhood would be as brainwashed. Not with the relatively short time they've been occupied.

Even if open and obvious political dissent isn't out there because of fear, trying to escape from the UAR would probably be a national pasttime in the near future if they keep this up. Especially considering the utter neglect their civilian infrastructure must see with all of these military projects.

The allure of a more free life elsewhere, the forbidden fruit, is very, very strong ; The USSR didn't actually have a bad quality of life, for example, but everyday living could become very tedious, especially with the constant bombardment of propaganda. The allure of The West as a mysterious Land Of The Free, even if not exactly true, was strong to enough to get people (Soviet officers!) to hijack supersonic fighters, attempt to flee using baloons or downright charge border posts in convertible automobiles. It's not exactly that difficult to imagine a lonely, frustrated Saddamistani soldier trying to get out.

Take note: The Soviet people were not actually starving or particularly abused by the system, and there were still escape attempts, even defections amongst intelligence officers - who enjoyed a tremendous amount of power and influence in the Soviet society, which was pretty much gone once they defected.

Bleh. I'm still thinking what to put in that post :P

Of course, the next issue that comes up is whether Shep throws up another fit over defectors.

Now that will be another sight to see.

What defectors? They're both UAR operatives, didn't you hear?

It seems the UARs populace is not that different from the Jihadis they hate so much :P

Well probably not. As pointed out, Shep's "massive retaliation" only tends to target those who can't hit back. While PeZookia on its own probably couldn't at this moment (though that's changing) the Red Technocracy certainly could. And they almost certainly would. So I doubt he'd break out the nukes (at least not if he has even a semblence of reason left). Remember when Coyote shelled him, he responded with conventional cluster munitions, not nukes.

His attack on TF-23 is an anamoly in this regard. The only thing I can think of is that either he didn't expect it to really be successful in actually destroying the convoy, or he figured that I was one of the few who wouldn't immediately jump to a full nuclear response (especially since he didn't actually destroy any ships or kill any sailors).

Had that been an LSRN convoy it probably would have been different. Lonestar would have nuked back without question.

Treadstone, on its own, has declared war on the UAR's R&D and war fighting capabilities. Their actions require a response; mine is assassinating anyone who has anything to do with their defense industries. They will now live in fear and have to have completely hardened lifestyles to not be at risk of death. If Shep ever shows up for a public event or if his security fucks up enough, there will be an attempt to kill him. (Though he may live in bunkers 24/7 as is :P ) Same goes for Coilerburg, though I am targeting them with less finesse. Right now in Shepnukistan, an effort is made to make killings look like accidents to keep security low as long as possible.

That's a pretty good idea. Depending on how he spaces it out it could go unnoticed for quite a bit. Eventually if he's just targeting these types of people someone will put 2 & 2 together, but depending on how it's executed that could take awhile.

Plus that also depends on how often such "accidents" routinely occur. Given the neglect of civilian infrastructure that is likely, it could probably blend in quite a bit.

Of course if Treadstone was going to be really ruthless they'd knock off total innocents as well. That would either further the "tragic accidents" theory, or at least make it look like a more general plot against Shepnukistani citizens, without necessarily targeting any one segment of the population.

But that depends on how far they're willing to go.

Same deal in Coilerburg, though obviously they'll figure on terrorism pretty quick. So that'd be a matter of whether they figure out where the terrorism is targeted or not.
