Ryan,

you might want to look at the length of your armor belt. 640' seems like it probably covers ore than double the length needed to protect your engines and magazines. You could probably shorten it up and either add guns or otherwise try and give it more ommph.

The thing is if we assume after the war that Colombia and Mexico are locked in a N Korea/S Korea standoff over a border somewhere in Panama then I would also assume you would want this ship to at least be competitive against my current designs so you would need to look at competing against this design. The critical feature is this:
9 - 18.00" / 457 mm 45.0 cal guns - 2,940.00lbs / 1,333.56kg shells, 100 per gun
Breech loading guns in turret on barbette mounts, 1925 Model
3 x 3-gun mounts on centreline ends, majority forward
1 raised mount - superfiring
Also "twin mount" means that both barrels elevate together and thus have to be fired together (slowing your overall rate of fire accounting for things like adjusting for fall of shot) because loading is only possible with the guns depressed. What you are probably looking for is the "2 gun mount"

I thought it was the other way around when I had built my designs and a quick wiki doesn't turn up what each type of weapon and mount is. Either way, unless there is a weight difference assume I have turrets that can elevate and fire each gun independently.
School requires more work than I remember it taking...

There is a composite strength difference and 2-gun/3-gun is a lower comp score than twin/triple. Anyway this site is informative in that all the big guns are mounted as 3-gun or 2-gun while only secondary armaments are twin or triple mount. So i would say that main armament need to be 2/3/4-gun otherwise the tubes must be reloaded simultaneously.

Another awesome resource I just found is this document. Starting about page 496 it goes in to the 8" and larger mounts. What you will notice is that "triple" mounts include only 1 elevation motor while the "3-gun" turrets include 3 elevation motors. I think that is pretty convincing that "twin" means the barrels raise and lower together and thus have to be reloaded together (since reload always occurs with elevations depressed). Thus "2-gun" means each barrel raises and lowers independently and thus can be reloaded and fired independently.

Well, if you want to reduce possible collective jamming problems, and possibly increase the rate of fire, you'd go with a x-gun mount. But of course, you technically increase complexity etc.

There is the reason for going with the "x-gun" mount on the big boys because of the loading issue. If you are trying to find the range on an enemy vessel you need to be able to fire sequentially and a twin/triple/quad mount requires that you fire (and you could fire sequentially) but you can't reload until any of the barrels while the others are elevated. You also can't put the barrels at different elevations for ranging/bracketing. In other words there are very good reasons for going with "x-gun" mounts which is why they are, near as I can tell, the universal style for all post-Dreadnought Battleships.

They aren’t universal, even by that chart you posted, just the predominating type for good reasons. The Nevada and Pennsylvania classes had a common gun cradle on the 14/45 triple turret. Dunkerque also had each pair of 13in guns in her quad turrets on a common cradle and it was not an uncommon feature on 8in cruisers. Nothing can eliminate the serious reliability and vulnerability problems of a common cradle, but the ballistic/gunnery disadvantages could be neutralized by fitting delay coils to reduce interference between guns and then firing all guns in a turret in a salvo instead of the normal practice of splitting them.

Which was kinda my point, there are advantages and disadvantages to both systems but for amateur's like us I would contend that we should primarily be driven by majority practice. That said I do think its important that we at least be aware of it so that somebody who uses the twin/triple mount system doesn't suddenly come back regretting it. In other words so long as its an informed conscious decision then we are fine but this was a bit of esoterica in SS that I don't think most of us were aware of.

Meh. I am not going to reprint all the reports for my ships, I am just going to do "assume they are all X-gun mounts" whenever triple or double mounts come up.

Umm then I'd have to say they are triple or twin mounts because changing to X-gun alters the Composite score by a noticeable amount for the main battery. When I went back and made my 420mm gun ships 3-gun instead of triple I ended up having to sacrifice a full inch of armor to get the comp score back within range. I'm not trying to be a jerk just that once I had this pointed out to me I had to shave a decent percent of my weight in order to get back in range after making the switch. The way SS calculates things the difference in turret type is very noticeable just like superfiring versus non-superfiring makes a big difference.

Which sucks because it actually makes it impossible to accurately depict a mixed-turret design like some of the US 1910s dreadnoughts, which had 10 guns in a two dual-two triple arrangement. If you set the two duals to be raised mounts, SS won't count them as Superfiring - it will only count them as such if you have one raised and one non-raised of each turret type (that is, 1 3- and 1 2-gun mount at deck level, and one of each raised and thus counting as superfiring).

At the same time, Marina informed me over IM once that the weight difference wouldn't be different. However, SpringSharp seems to insist there is. I wonder if it counts superfiring turrets as "higher" than a plain raised turret?

Actually, it does count them as superfiring, but only if the raised mounts are in the first group and both groups are set to the same location.

Excellent machinery, storage, compartmentation space

Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform
Excellent seaboat, comfortable, can fire her guns in the heaviest weather
But even when I flip it around and put the triples in the first group (in which case the raised twins are no longer tagged as superfiring) it makes precisely zero difference to composite strength.
At the same time, Marina informed me over IM once that the weight difference wouldn't be different. However, SpringSharp seems to insist there is. I wonder if it counts superfiring turrets as "higher" than a plain raised turret?
She's right: there is no weight difference created by the "superfiring" tag, which take exactly the same weight as a "raised" mount. I have experimented extensivly with this.

What does affect the weight is the height of the freeboard where Springsharp thinks the turret is located, and I'm willing to bet that is what's actually happening in your case (try playing around with a ship that has a completely level freeboard deck to see what I mean). You may also note that for some reason if you concentrate all the mounts on either the fore or aft on a flat-decked ship, you get a very small weight saving (usually only 0.01 CS).

I know Deuce already described this but my 1928 series BB is :
Armament:
  • 10 - 18.00" / 457 mm 45.0 cal guns - 3,000.01lbs / 1,360.78kg shells, 100 per gun
    • Breech loading guns in turret on barbette mounts, 1925 Model
      • 2 x 2-gun mounts on centreline ends, evenly spread
        • 2 raised mounts - superfiring

2 x 3-gun mounts on centreline ends, evenly spread
    12 - 5.00" / 127 mm 38.0 cal guns - 59.33lbs / 26.91kg shells, 120 per gun
    • Quick firing guns in deck and hoist mounts, 1916 Model
      • 6 x 2-gun mounts on side ends, majority aft
    16 - 2.95" / 75.0 mm 39.0 cal guns - 12.28lbs / 5.57kg shells, 600 per gun
    • Dual purpose guns in deck mounts, 1922 Model
      • 4 x 2 row quad mounts on sides, evenly spread
    16 - 0.79" / 20.0 mm 39.0 cal guns - 0.22lbs / 0.10kg shells, 600 per gun
    • Anti-air guns in deck mounts, 1922 Model
      • 4 x 2 row quad mounts on sides, evenly spread
    16 - 0.50" / 12.7 mm 12.0 cal guns - 0.04lbs / 0.02kg shells, 150 per gun
    • Machine guns in deck mounts, 1909 Model
      • 8 x Single mounts on sides, forward deck aft
8 x Single mounts on sides, aft deck aft
Weight of broadside 30,913 lbs / 14,022 kg

The critical thing to get superfiring seems to be that you must have centerline "ends" because "distributed" seem to try and stack a turret right where the funnels or superstructure would be (thus preventing superfiring). Once you've gonewith "end" (fore>aft or aft>fore doesn't seem to matter) you can then spread your turrets in to two different types and arrange them vertically as needed.

Actually, I see what's also different. You put the 2-guns first, then the 3-guns. If you swap them, if the 3 guns are in Group 1 and the 2-guns are in Group 2, it won't superfire them.

IOW, it has to be:
10 - 18.00" / 457 mm 45.0 cal guns - 2,940.86lbs / 1,333.95kg shells, 150 per gun
Breech loading guns in deck mounts, 1925 Model
2 x 2-gun mounts on centreline ends, evenly spread
2 raised mounts - superfiring
2 x 3-gun mounts on centreline ends, evenly spread
Not:
10 - 18.00" / 457 mm 45.0 cal guns - 2,940.86lbs / 1,333.95kg shells, 150 per gun
Breech loading guns in deck mounts, 1925 Model
2 x 3-gun mounts on centreline ends, evenly spread
2 x 2-gun mounts on centreline ends, evenly spread
2 raised mounts
Group 1 has to have the superfiring mounts, not Group 2.

(Just kidding).

IMO it is a good design.
Yeah, it manages to have a sizable 18" armament, good speed and range for a battlewagon, and the desired protection of 18" belt and 6" deck with the belt having a good height, all without going past 60,000 tons standard, which was my goal. At the same time, however, I prefer paying the extra 1.6IBPs per ship for the two superfiring dual turret arrangement over having one quad and two triples, one of which is superfiring. Less chance of a catastrophic hit taking out almost half of my ship's main armament.

Oh, the Einhelt Klasse. Swap the order of the guns so that the ones you want raised/superfiring are in Group 1 and the deck-level turrets are Group 2. It'll make the raised ones superfiring guns.

At the same time, however, I prefer paying the extra 1.6IBPs per ship for the two superfiring dual turret arrangement over having one quad and two triples, one of which is superfiring. Less chance of a catastrophic hit taking out almost half of my ship's main armament.
Well, I prefer the extra firepower forward, gives me some edge in the opening salvos. That said, you probably mean 16" belt and 8" deck.
Oh, the Einhelt Klasse. Swap the order of the guns so that the ones you want raised/superfiring are in Group 1 and the deck-level turrets are Group 2. It'll make the raised ones superfiring guns.
Thanks for catching it, these were always supposed to be superfiring, but I guess Springsharp does not automatically notice that.

I just learned that trick thanks to Wilkens' stuff. If you make the superfiring mounts Group 2, they're not counted as superfiring unless you put a non-superfiring mount in Group 2. OTOH, if Group 1, it apparently will presume Superfiring even with no deck level mounts.

Steve, not sure if it was intentional but I don't think your armor belt is inclined. Normally you do that so you can get an extra couple inches of effective protection out of the plates you are using. Those 15" plates on the one design would be defeated by most 18" guns out there out as far as 30,000 yards (based on the US 16"/50 APC round). At the same time vertical penetration will exceed 8" around 35,000 yards so you've got a pretty narrow zone of invulnerability. Adding a tilt of 20 deg or so adds a good inch of effectiveness to your armor and would add maybe 5,000 yards to your zone of invulnerability. it also doesn't seem to change your weight (nor should it) near as I can tell.

Yeah, forgot to inclide them. But that doesn't effect composite strength, so consider them inclided to something like 18-20 degrees.

I believe there are actually drawbacks to including, IIRC, relating to how it effects a boat's buoyancy, but the advantage in protection is really just too great.

Also, at one time I did use decks thicker than 8". That got me slider-ruler stabbed by a naval enthusiast friend on the grounds that 8" was about the thickest ever done. IIRC outside 30,000 yards, in the pre-radar days, accuracy became, well, worse than it already was.

Oh, the second version with the 2x2 and 2x3 arrangement is the one I'm probably going with, and it has a 16" belt, not 15". 20 degree inclination.
