Air Defense Command to be shut down
In the latest re-organization to come out of the collapse of Shepistan, Air Defense Command will be de-commissioned within 6 months. A new organization, Continental Defense Command, will take its place.

“This will be a continuing reform of the Ministry of War to re-assess our requirements in the post-Shepistan era.” A Brickhall Spokeswoman said.

Already new plans are being drawn up to de-commission many of the old ADC sites, or re-align them for Continental Defense. Rumors are a ABM system including heavy ABM sites will be added, with the possibility of Tian Xia’s land-based AEGIS defense sites…More

Northern Test Range

Today's test wasn't a test of any new weapon, but rather was part of a series to clear some existing weapons for the F-15F. The ultimate result would be an increased maritime strike and SEAD capability from the increased number of platforms it could be performed with, possibly resulting in the ability to retire the F-16 aircraft currently performing the role.

Aircraft 99-203, named Jezebel, was performing the test. She was carrying 7 Harpoon missiles, one off each wing, four on the heavy stores stations on the left and right sides of the fuselage, and one centerline. Unlike air to air missiles, they wouldn't have to be launched while making wild gyrations, but they would have to remain attached.

Later in the test series, the HARM missiles were to be cleared for use. Other weapons to be integrated were the JASSM in a similar configuration to the Harpoon, and the new Diamondback missile.

Inaugural laying of the foundation for the new Large Diameter Telescope Interferometric Array

Long on the drawing boards and the dream of many astronomers, astrophysics and cosmologists, the Space Science Institute was given the go ahead a few months ago to begin construction of the Ground Telescope Interferometric Array in Anatolia. The telescopes will employ the latest technology, and will be the most advanced telescope to be found in Nova Terra. Funded with a staggering 5 billion, the telescope is expected to be complete in 5-8 years time. It is believed that the mirror will be 42m across, but made up of 5 mirrors joined together. Such large mirrors used in an interferometric setup will provide high resolution images necessary for imaging planets. "This is very exciting and we are eagerly awaiting the completion of the telescope," says a physicist. The lDTIA is believed to involve scientists from throughout the Old Continent, with the Byzantine Government providing the bulk of the funding.

Progress continues with the Superconducting Linear Collider

Progress continues with the SLC, with the tunnels complete, and the construction companies have begun installing the huge gigantuan equipment throughout the tunnels. It is expected that the construction companies will take 1.5-2 years to finish the fitting out, and once completed, physicists will begin a year long testing regime before the experiments can take place.

Jerusalem Space Center, T-3 days

It looked almost grotesque, the rocket driving thruster-first towards its launch site, while technicians and engineers walked by its side, discussing calculations and the mission plan. It seemed they didn't want to live the machine's side even for a moment.

Alan Shroompard was there, if only for a moment: his training schedule allowed him about an hour today, and he used it to walk our to the rocket. Touching it filled him with a sense of foreboding, but also excitement. He had to wonder if the mission would be a success - if so, he'd become...immortal.

"Are we sure the software was upgraded properly? I don't want another 'glitch' with a Shroomanian up there."

Common Carter Connoway was becoming something of a celebrity in the space program - and he would have a definite place amongst the best and brightest once he ran the first succesful manned mission. But for this, Alan Shroompard would have to return home safe, sound and uncooked.

"Yeah. We have a hundred monkeys running simulations using the new software down at the university, and...", his aide continued his report about preparations for the launch.

"Wait, what? Monkeys?", Connoway interrupted him

"Yeah, uh..."

"Monkeys?!", it looked like CCC was going to blow his top

"That's what we call interns, sir.", another assistant helpfully explained.

"Oh. Uh...yeah. Keep up the good work..."

Foreign Ministry preparing appraisal of trade status

The Foreign Ministry was today direct by the King to begin a comprehensive review of existing IWlkonian trade relations with all nations who are not yet signatories of the Convention on Biological Weapons. The review is the first step in what many expect will be a long running diplomatic battle to try and win universal approval of the treaty. Officials within the Ministry have indicated that the King himself has already been involved directly with the preliminary work on the comming diplomatic barrage. Several indicated that getting the treaty to near universal acceptance is a priority of the King before the next Parliamentary eleciton at the end of next year.

"He wants to be able to get certain military projects cancelled but can't afford a parliament unwilling to look weak on defense if the threat is still out there," said one source who remains annonymous. "With the entirety of the MESS onboard this represents a chance for real savings if we can get the rest of the world to agree to these limits."

Result: Wilkonian Foreign Ministry is preparing background material to recommend a course of action to win wider acceptance of the BioWeapons treaty.

President Headed For Jerusalem

Image
The Presidential jet en route to Byzantium

President Sidney Hank has left on a two day New Year trip to the Byzantine city of Jerusalem to watch the launch of the first human into orbit. During a brief press conference the President, an avid fan and big supporter of space-related R&D, stated that "this is a big step for humankind. We've been present in space for some time of course, but now we are finally going there ourselves, in the flesh. It is a historic occasion, and I think it fitting to be there to show my support to all the men and women who have made this possible". Rumours that Director Daphne Sinclair is also headed for Jerusalem are thusfar unconfirmed.

Shroomanian Stories

Prime Minister Shroom wiped his brow. At least Constantinople wasn't too far away from Jerusalem, but he hated having to finish the SNC Conference in Unreal Time. That stuff always gave him time-lag, sort of like jet lag, but more... unreal.

The Shroombus A380 taxied on the Jerusalem runway and he stepped out and walked down the stairway, flanked by SSS men, and was greeted by an unexpected sight.

"Alison?" Shroom asked Alison, just to make sure it was her and he wasn't going crazy from drinking all that breastmilk.

"Hi Shroom," she greeted with a wave as she walked up to the Prime Minister and went to his side.

"What are you doing here?" Shroom asked. "Aren't you, uhh... vacationing?"

"I was, but I was in the neighborhood. I was visiting the Wailing Wall and the Ranting Roof and thought, well, what the hell? Besides, I figured you'd need some help making that big speech of yours you've always wanted to make." Alison smiled and held her PM's hand.

"Oh... Lusy-chan," Shroom gave her hand a squeeze and, together, they went to the Prime Ministerial Shrooms Royce.

Work begins on floating sea platform launch project

The Byzantine Government officially allocated 30 billion over the next 5-10 years to a sea platform project, with the objective of launching spacecraft from a sea platform. The project also includes the designing and construction of a rocket specially suited for the project. The rocket's designing is rumoured to be done together with a fellow MESS member.

Mach 3+ Freight transport on the horizon?
Dominion Air Freight, Asheville Parcel service, and a dozen other courier services have completed an industry study validating the need for a Mach 3+ freighter.

The Mach 3 + freighter would be used for low-volume high cost cargo, such as organ transplants, just-in-time factory parts, biological and chemical transport. Several industry leaders state that the enormous $200k+ per flight costs would be justified with such items.

Already there is reaction in the aviation industry. Combat Optics, which recently gained the contract to study captured Japanistani Mach3+ interceptors, is reportedly seeking a corporate partner in developing a Mach 3+ freighter....[More]

Imperial Chronicles

The MiG-105 rolled out of the secret production plant in the CSR. It will be hosted up a An-225 and then dropped from the air, with a pilot who would then glide it down to the airfield. The objective of the exercise was to operationally verify the control surfaces of the aircraft, before the aircraft entered the next phase of testing.

Image

The An-225 lifted off with its passenger in tow. At the designated altitude, the MiG-105 was released and the pilot proceeded to guide the aircraft down to the airfield. It was by and far a perfect demonstration of the aircraft, and the aerospace engineers were eager to proceed to the next stage of testing.

Result: MiG-105 passes the first test. Next test coming up...

Freedom Air signs on to the Old Dominion's latest proposal

Official with Freedom Air, the nations second largest air carrier, today indicated that they have signed a preliminary deal to enter into development financing with Dominon Boeing. The outline is not yet available to the press agents holding the conference but speculation has largely been focused on the money the company is currently sitting on in terms of its rising domestic ridership. The increase in cashflow over the last four years has led to a huge surplus but also uncertainity from top management as to where the company would expand to next. With a current domestic only service speculaiton has long run rampant that the airliner would seek a major fleet upgrade for international travel. The latest deal seems to be poised to give the company ground floor access to the next generation of long distance passenger craft. Speculation remains that they would be the first non-Dominion carrier to field the plane as domestic ariliners are expected to have priority.

Canissian Companies Seek Purchase of Dominion Micro-Reactors

Canissian companies, from trains to aircraft to aerspace & defense are interested in the Dominion Technologies micro-reactors.

"Nearly everyone has a reason to evaluate this technology for possible uses," said a spokesman for Royal Overland, a major Canissian railroad. Talks range from either running trains from onboard reactors, or by stringing reactors together and then supplying power remotely to trains.

"Probably, for underground applications, we'd build a series of reactors that would simultaneously be used to provide rail power, and supply civil defense shelters," the Royal Overland representative said.

Other power possibilities include using the small reactors to power long-term, long-range aerostats or even automated shipping. The aerospace possibilities are endless, and include providing power for the EGL (Exo-Gravity Lander) or "Eagle" transporters.
"This would provide an excellent power source for moon base and inter-lunar travel," said Professor Gilad Georgeson, one of the chief researchers on the EGL project at the Technion scientce university.

Already, plans for concept vehicles are being drawn up to send robotic construction machines to the moon Selene, powered by micro-reactors, to begin construction of a moon base.
"It is too early to turn these 'dream sheet' plans into solid prototypes," Professor Georgeson said, "We need to land first and see what Selene is like before we commit ourselves to long-term basing. But we also want to have plans already on the board so that if-- when-- we decide to start, we can jump right on it."

Funding for any future moonbase may face hurdles from the increasingly resentful Nationalist Party, which has seen military budgets almost frozen for nearly four years now.
"We've been able to replace, repair, and maintain," said an angry Nationalist representative in the Parliament, who spoke on condition of anonymity, "But we have been unable to expand the military or engage in new, major end-item replacements or procurements. Everything has been sunk into the science divisions."

The Nationalist camp was briefly appeased by the expansion of a wholly new wing of the Air Force, when hundreds of drone fighters and bombers were built in the wake of the One Week War, following better-than-expected battlefield results. But even robotic military expansion --an area of personal interest to the King himself-- has slowed since the Air Force got its new planes.

"No robotic tanks, no robotic trucks, engineering vehicles... nothing," said Colonel William Axman, of the Ft. Garou military research institute. "We have plans and ideas, but no contracts to build."

The lack of contracts has concerned Libertarian Party leadership as well, and it is rumored that a Nationalist and Libertarian party joint statement will be issued soon, calling for an emergency session of Parliament to address these issues.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.

Namu Island
mid Pacific ocean

A Notice to Mariners had previously been sent out warning ships away from this godforsaken island. It was previously uninhabited, and it's inhabitants today were a trio of technicians preparing the hydroreactive device, the crew of the LCAC that brought them here, and the security guards. This windswept island was being cordoned by TXN ships far over the horizon from the island. The island had been chosen both for it's remoteness (no other inhabited island was within several hundred miles), and for its lack of value (being the top of an extinct volcano in the middle of the north pacific). Still, the island itself wasn't the actual location of the test. That dubious honor belonged to an unnamed barge that would be moored offshore, in an attempt to at least reduce the fallout from pulverized rock.

A specially configured drone aircraft was to take air samples. Rather then attempt to decontaminate it, it would be entombed if the radiation level was found to be dangerous. It was unknown how electronics would react to this above ground test (all previous reaction weapon tests having taken place underground). Therefore, recordings were made using film cameras as well as with electronic devices.

The device being tested was deliberately oversized compared with what the designers expected to be using in operational devices. However, it would still be deliverable by bomber, if it needed to be used in an emergency capability. The decision had been made to skip using liquid deuterium and do this first shot using lithium deuteride.

2 hours before initiation, the LCAC evacuated the island, bringing itself to LPD-20 Jiangsu, then steaming 60 miles off shore. After recovery of the LCAC, Jiangsu buttoned down in preparation. The Jiangsu was the closest ship to the site, and it was upwind of the predicted fallout zone. All other ships were at least twice the distance of Jiangsu from the initiation.

"New Horizons" for the Shinra Navy

The Shinra Republic has announced the entrance of two new ship classes into the fleet, designs from the "New Horizons" project CGN and DDGN sections. The new ships, as well as similar vessels entering service in other MESS nations, will be equipped with the Synchronous Tracking And Response, or STAR system.

The Imperator-class STAR destroyer and Allegiance-class STAR cruiser will be the lead ships of their respective classes and will initially serve to test out the new systems, for the follow-on ships which will replace the current DDGs, CGs, and CGNs in the Shinra Republic Navy.

Limited details of the new ships will be provided to media sources and to the public at a later date, Navy officials said.

"New Horizons" Launches and Delivers

Today as part of a series of New year's events prior to the March of Flames, still scheduled for tonight in the Memorial District despite weather warnings, the Ministry of Defense welcomed representative from the Shinra Republic for the launch of the first ships to come from the New Horizons program.

With the traditional bottle of bubbly smashed against the keel the STAR Destroyer Imperator slid gracefully into the Gulf of Shinra. With fireworks blasting off the ship began the first of a limited set of demonstraiton sea manuevers before being formally handed over to the Shinra Republic Navy. While more than a half dozen vessels awaited christening within the Wilkonian Imperial Navy the first vessels in this line were always slated for delivery to Shinra due to the massive susbsidy the later had placed to allow for more rapid construction of Wilkonia's carrier force.

Mere hours later in the Gulf of Baja the first Alleigance class STAR Cruiser made a similair journey accompanied by the King's Own Royal Marine Band placing martial and festive airs while the fireowrks graced the scene. Likewise the Alleigance will be joining the Shinra Navy after acceptance trials.

With New Horizons now entering the operational stage analysts are eager for the first public disclosures on the advanced systems which have been under development, under multiple program administrations, for the better part of the last decade and a half. It is also serving as the first preview as to what "Far Horizons" will end up producing when it begins comign to fruition in the next 15 to 20 years.

Constantinople Times

The first hulls of the Exarch and Consul class cruisers launched.

The first hulls of the Exarch and Consul class cruisers were launched today. The Exarch and Consul class, apparently now displacing at 27,500 tonnes with full combat load, these ships will be equipped STAR combat system, will be sent for outfitting which will last the next 6-9months before trials begin. They are each powered by 3 nuclear reactors with an integrated power system and electric drive. The Exarch class in particular will be outfitted with the General Vertical Launch System or GVLS which was tested and certified ready for use last year. The GVLS should be able to fire either 1 P-750 Meteorite-M or 2 P-1000 Vulkan or 2 P-700 or 4 Klub missiles.

Byzantine Heavy Industries and Nuclear Energy Institute demonstrate a number of working concepts.

The Nuclear Energy Institute and Byzantine Heavy Industries demonstrated a number of working concepts today at the Nuclear Energy Institute in Constantinople. Among the prototypes show are:

1. Nuclear Micro Reactors that could produce 100KW power, ideal for a single apartment block, and a 50MWe (135MWt) model. Dubbed 4S, meaning Super Safe, Simple & Small, the reactors have 30 year life with no refueling, and are cooled by Sodium and the reactivity is controlled using Lithium, which means there are no moving parts. A 100MWe and 200MWe model is under development. The Ministry of Energy indicated that it was interested in developing a nuclear reactor facility that employed many of these small reactors in a modular fashion. The Imperial Byzantine Navy has also indicated that a 200MWe model would present interesting opportunities for future nuclear submarines.

(OOC: I am basing this on the Toshiba model. Read here: http://www.utnl.jp/~rohonbu/PBNC/1-1.pdf)

2. A small Pebble Bed Reactor (PBR) was also demonstrated today. This was a scaled down model of a future 1000MWe plant that would be begin construction some time next year.

The NEI told us that they are also working on a molten salt reactor, which can employ Thorium or a mixture of Thorium/Plutonium/Uranium as fuel. The NEI actively collaborates with CSR, USSR and Shroomanian scientists and scientists from other parts of the world.

Crimson Star Republic, Comrade Stanislav Rocket Factory
Image
- What is this "Star Cruiser" the Old Dominion wants to impress us with? - hummed Korolevsky as he stepped through the construction halls of the giant plant. - You know, we had a few good ideas from that guy...

- Baluevsky. He's the airforce senior, - the men proceeded to Korolevsky's oversight desk in the hall of the "Soyuz" rocket assembly line. - Certainly his warlike mind, considering nuclear weapons a prime tool, has been useful in finding space applications for them, even with the inevitable war caveat.

- Oh right, - Korolevsky smiled. - Comrade Chertok, and what do you think of that design?
Image
- Seems pretty damn feasible to me. The only problem would be exploding nukes underneath the thing, but our cleaner thermonuclear devices, especially if we choose the site of liftoff wisely, can propel the gigantic ship into orbit. After that, there won't be much of a problem since it would only be used as an inter-planetary vessel, and re-stocked with cargo and fuel using ordinary next-generation boosters.

- In that case, we can say we'd have our own starship as well, - Korolev smiled. - Copy those designs and prepare a folder for Department Seven-Zero meeting, I want those nutters to start digging this thing right now. I'll personally present the project to Comrade Stanislav, I am more than sure he will approve.

RAR and BnL Work towards developing Private Spaceflight

Image

Royal Areospace Reserch Headquarters, Port Victory-Today, Crown owned company Royal Areospace Reserch has announced plans for a program to make spaceflight not just the domain of astronauts, but to the public. While continuing working on various contracts for FASTA with government Support, Buy'n Lage Corperation President Shelby Forthright has announced the signing of a contract for the creation of a private manned spacecraft.

The $50 Million Contract holds plans for a low cost craft capable of reaching the beginings of space and remaining there for a few minutes, giving passengers a breif experiance of weightlessness. While these technologies are still in the developmental stages, if all goes according to plan the prototype could be produced within the time period of a year. Buy'n Large has also begun opening a new branch known as BnL Galactic. RAR also has announced plans looking into development of local rocket manufacturing in Zoria, including plans to open a new factory for their production for both FASTA and Private usage.
