You guys all realize THEL can defend an radius of all of about 1km right? Unless your afraid of Shepnukistani 4.2in nuclear mortar bombs its not the best air defence investment to be making.

It's range for 100% kills was put at 5km, which I have been using as it's engagement range:

Wiki--
The cooperative Tactical High Energy Laser (THEL) Demonstrator ACTD was initiated by a memorandum of agreement between the United States and the Government of Israel on July 18, 1996. The THEL is a high-energy laser weapon system that uses proven laser beam generation technologies, proven beam-pointing technologies, and existing sensors and communication networks to provide a new active defense capability in counter air missions. The goal of THEL is to provide a different solution than other systems or technologies for the acquisition and close-in engagement problems associated with short- to medium-range threats, thereby significantly enhancing coverage of combat forces and theater-level assets. The THEL's low cost-per-kill (about $3,000 per kill, as opposed to the $444,000 cost of a Rolling Airframe Missile) could also provide a cost-effective defense against low-cost air threats. It features up to 60 shots without reloading and if it meets design goals, a probability of kill of nearly 100% at a range of 5 km.
Five Kilometers is good enough for me. Even if it's a nuke detonation, most of Shep's nukes are tactical-level, and 5km of standoff increases chances for the civilians considerably.

I know that it can be counter-measured with decoys, reflective rockets, etc, but THEL is a 100% improvement over what I had, which was Stinger-equipped Humvees. THEL would have stopped Shep's TLAMS during the global war, if I'd had 'em, and it makes sense to me that we'd be planning for a replay of that.

Um, you were the ones using TLAMs, not me. I use SRAM Clones, basically really fast rockets that travel at around mach 3+, with a 100 mile range for standoff nukings.

What is this Shinra Naval Air Force Academy? It'd just be the Air Force Academy. Naval aviation is a part of the Navy, with the Air Force being its own seperate branch.

Just as an FYI.

I think people keep bringing up the state of Shepnukistan's economy and infrastructure because it isn't talked about very much by the official Shepnukistani authorities.

All we hear about is new weapon tests and such, not too much on the cuts being made in other areas or reconstruction.

I for one want to have a look at the post nuking Neo-Tokyo type cities you'v been building in the wake of nuclear civil war.

well thursday I find out about what's taking my computer so long to get back. When I finally do wake up, it's Doc from Whiteboard grade coffee, followed by a housecleaning not seen since the last chapter of the Oddossy. (Ok, not that bad, maybe)

I just assumed all along that Shep's people are basically North Koreans; servile drones brainwashed to the point of perpetual dullardness, all supremely happy to slave and toil in field and factory for days on end for the Dear Leader-- who probably has convinced them that the rest of the nations are so poor they have to eat grass and bark to survive, or something.

Well, then I wonder where all those comics Shep has been selling come from. They must really revere Shep as their God if some of them are creative enough to produce that.

On the THEL, we aren't exactly sitting on our laurels on that one. :)

Exactly what it says. Full out pre-emptive strike by UAR forces on the MESS, following discovery via National Technical means of a planned MESS first strike on the UAR in 30 days.

Don't play stupid. It was scheduled for August/September; and I was going to be out of contact with the board during the first week of August while I was at the USAF museum in Ohio with Stuart....

If it was just a lone MESS member planning on such a thing secretly, well....sucks to be the MESS now.

Anyway, don't worry; you're not going to be nuked by the UAR, just act like a fly on the wall and don't let any missiles launch from your territory...

Rocks fall, shep dies. You have no means to discover that anything of the fact would be occuring, if in fact it was planned.

Because I don't go overboard with the secret agent stuff, doesn't mean I have an agency doing spooky stuff.

The idea has certainly been discussed, but it has been entirely theoretical, like, well, pretty much any other operation plans. No concrete steps have been taken that I know of, so if it's secret, it's really secret-- even to me!

Really, from my point of view, Shep just finally woke up one morning and decided to "go-code" it. Not like we didn't expect this all along.

Sounds a hell lot more than just theoretical, judging from the log.

BTW, you have a nuclear SUBROC swarm about to impact on your coastal cities and ports in about 20~ seconds.

And there's anything against idly speculating in a chat, which you weren't invited to? Nothing happens in the game unless something has actually been posted about it. Ergo, plot doesn't exist.

My lone THEL there will do it's best. I'm not in a position to write much of a response post now.

That chat log was the first I'd heard of this. We batted around the idea of a pre-emptive strike after the experimental aircraft shootdown/Libertopia nuking incident, but we just drew up ideas, figured it was something to bear in mind and pretty much back-burner'd it, without ever really fleshing out much details.

That's more than idle speculation, and it was real stupid to do it in a chat I frequent regularly and have friends in.

Anyway, the first SUBROCs just initated in Canissia. Weather at Pearl Point is:

Alright, What about these following factors besides population loss...

-Destruction of Industry (Including stuff like Steel Mills, Munitions Factories, R&D Centers that have military sugifigance that are undoubtably higher priorty Targets), as well as trained machinists and other such skilled personnel
-Destruction of Civilian stuff like Hospitals, Schools, Power plants, Water treatment plants and such that need to be rebuilt as well as tank factories postwar unless you want your future nation to be full of disease ridden morons that tend freeze to death in the winter when they run out of scraps of wood to burn.
-Destruction of Infastructure such as Railyards, Ports and such which because of their logistical importance would be targetted during the war.
-Compromized Export Status from being in the UAR, do you think a Zorian or PeZookian Citizen at a Buy n' Large is going to be likely to by a product when they see the words "Made in Shepnukistan" stamped on it? Now the chances of it actually hitting the shelves to compete when there are likely embargos up the ass on the UAR? You Exchanged a couple hundred million costumers of your wares for sixty million when you joined.
-Various social issues from people having their homes and jobs blown to bits, which is going to cut back on the standard of living in Shepnukistan and further slimming the customer base of Shepnukistani Civilian Sector industry and pushing more of them over the cliff into bankruptcy, which is not going to help matters economically.
-Then there is the fact that part of Shepnukistan is now Nukistan. Cutting additional Humans from the total population, while giving you a nice land boarder that you have to keep guarded.
-Various other issues that come up when the perverbial sledgehammer hits economy that make things hard to start up again such as hyper inflation, increased crime rates and so on.

The only way i can partially see around this is that you have adopted a Force Economic model of the Stalinistic variety and even then there are going to be issues.
