The basic unit to build an Army is the Brigade. What is a Brigade? This will lay it out, fairly quickly and basically, what comes with a basic Brigade:

BASIC BRIGADE COMBAT TEAM:

1st. BATTALION: 823 Soldiers
HQ CO. (87 Soldiers)
"A" CO. (184 Soldiers)
"B" CO. (184 Soldiers)
"C" CO. (184 Soldiers)
"D" CO. (184 Soldiers)

2nd. BATTALION: 823 Soldiers
HQ CO. (87 Soldiers)
"A" CO. (184 Soldiers)
"B" CO. (184 Soldiers)
"C" CO. (184 Soldiers)
"D" CO. (184 Soldiers)

3rd. CAVALRY ("Scout & Reconnaissance") SQUADRON: 177 Soldiers
HQ TROOP (87 Soldiers)
"A" TROOP (30 Soldiers)
"B" TROOP (30 Soldiers)
"C" TROOP (30 Soldiers)

4th. FIELD ARTILLERY BATTALION: 211 Soldiers
HQ BATTERY (87 Soldiers)
"A" BATTERY (Air Defense; missiles & guns) (62 Soldiers)
"B" BATTERY (Towed 105) (62 Soldiers)

Organization:
7 men per gun/system; 2 guns per platoon; 3 plts per battery; 1 HQ Section of 16 Soldiers w/Fire Direction & Control Team [4 Soldiers] = 62 Soldiers.

5th. BATTALION/SPECIAL TROOPS BATTALION: 200 Soldiers (approx.)
HQ CO. (incl. MP Platoon & CBRN Recon Plt.)
HQ CO. for the Brigade
INTEL CO.
NETWORK SUPPORT CO.
ENGINEER CO.

Engineers: set mines, take out mines, use demolitions, set up or defeat tank traps, trenches, ditches, boobytraps, deal with barbed wire, bridging, and clearing roads & runways.

6th. BRIGADE SUPPORT BATTALION: 200 Soldiers (approx.)
HQ CO.
"A" CO. (SUPPLY)
"B" CO. (MAINTENANCE)
"C" CO. (MEDICAL)
"D" CO. (INFANTRY FORWARD SUPPORT)
"E" CO. (INFANTRY FORWARD SUPPORT)
"F" CO. (RECON FORWARD SUPPORT)
"G" CO. (FIRES FORWARD SUPPORT)

--That is a Brigade.

Typically, a DIVISION will be two or three Brigaeds of one particular type, supported by single Brigades of another type to assist.

So an "INFANTRY DIVISION" will have, say, 2 or 3 Infantry Brigades, with 1 Armored, 1 Cavalry, and 1 Aviation Brigade in assistance:
Division:
Infantry Brigade
Infantry Brigade
Infantry Brigade
Cavalry Brigade
Armored Brigade
Aviation Brigade

Division = 15,000 Soldiers

Likewise, an "ARMORED DIVISION" will have mostly Armored Brigades, with one or two Infantry & Aviation Brigades.

CAVALRY is typically a combination of both ARMOR (tanks) and INFANTRY. It's neither one nor the other. They are mostly used to scout around and find the enemy, figure out how strong the enemy is or where the weak points in his defenses are, and report back. CAVALRY operates ahead of the main body of your army and can defend itself, but usually does not have enough of one type or another tanks or infantry to carry out an assault by itself.

Cavalry Brigades can overwhelm some weaker forces, and are sufficient to deal with some Third World Brigades and Warlord Militias, but generally Cavalry does not operate alone.

SO NOW YOU KNOW--
Each Brigade comes with its own air defenses, artillery support, Headquarters, Intelligence, Engineers, Medical, Mechanic, and other combined arms features.

BUILD-YOUR-OWN ARMY:

The Army Brigade is used as the basic building block.
A Western-style Army Brigade will have about 2,500 men in it (give or take).
Western ("NATO" or US-style) Brigades will have 4 vehicles in a Platoon.
The point costs here reflect a Western style Brigade.

Eastern-Bloc style Brigades have three vehicles per Platoon, and number about 2,000 men.
Eastern-Bloc Brigades are 1 point cheaper to reflect this.
Technically, you can buy MORE Eastern-block Brigades, but they will be about 1/3rd smaller then their Western counterparts.

The Examples:
Some examples are given to explain equipment/kit and tech generations (ie: "Professional" (1985-2000 gear):
Mechanized Infantry Vehicles: BMP-3; Bradley; Warrior IFV). These are presented to give you a ballpark idea of what type of equipment is exemplified by that tech and equipment level. It does not necessarily mean that EXACT vehicle must be used. Bear in mind this is a different world with its own history. You can use "something LIKE a Bradley, but called the "M-5 Dark Horse IFV" or whatever.

DETAILS (FOR THOSE WHO WANT THEM):

Here are some details on what to expect in the details: what is in a Company, for example, or "where are snipers located in a Company", that sort of thing.

My example here is for heavy squads of 13 Soldiers. Some countries believe in smaller squads of 9 soldiers or even 7. I am also using the Western style of Platoons, which use four squads of soldiers, or four vehicles-- remember that Eastern-Bloc Platoons are typically based on threes, not fours.

CANISSIAN MILITARY ORGANIZATION:

Fire Team: 4 Soldiers:
1 Team Leader (Junior NCO) with rifle
1 Grenadier with Rifle/Grenade Launcher
1 Light Machinegunner
1 MG assistant with rifle

Light Infantry Squad: 13 Soldiers:
1 Squad Leader (NCO) with rifle
1st team (w/machinegun)
2nd team (w/machinegun)
3rd team (w/RPG)

Platoon: 42 Soldiers:
1 Platoon Leader (1st or 2nd Lt.) + Driver
1 Platoon SGT.
3 Squads

Company: 184 Soldiers in all per Infantry Company:
3 Infantry Platoons (42 Soldiers each = 126 Soldiers)
1 Weapons Platoon (+ 42)
1 Headquarters Section: (16 Soldiers)

-five medics (one attached to each rifle platoon and the senior corpsman with the company headquarters)
-an administrative clerk
-a police sergeant (typically holding the rank of corporal or sergeant)
-a training NCO
-a Commo NCO
-a CBRN NCO
-a first sergeant + driver
-an Executive Officer (XO), typically a first lieutenant, + driver
-a Commanding Officer (CO), typically a captain, + driver

NATO ORDER OF BATTLE JUNE 1989
REPUBLIC OF FRANCE
by Andy Johnson

L'ARMEE D'TERRE
(French Army)

Note 1: Although the French military was not an active part of NATO, France was dedicated to the defense of Western Europe. The 1st French Army during wartime was assigned to CENTAG while the Rapid Action Force was assigned to NORTHAG.

Note 2: France can mobilize and deploy its forward forces in as little as 8 days but would need 14-21 days to complete the entire mobilization. France maintains 28 days of war stocks.

Note 3: French Armor and Infantry Divisions are about one half the size of a typical NATO heavy division and the light Armored Divisions are about one-third the size.

Note 4: French Regimental designations for Armor: Chars de Combat (RCC), Dragoons (RD), or Cuirassiers (RC). The Infantry designations are Infanterie (RI), Groupe-ment de Chasseurs (GC), Regiment de Marché de Tchad (RMT), Infanterie Etrangere (REI or DBLE - Foreign Legion), and Infanterie de Marine (RIMa - historical designation). Artillery is Artillerie (RA) or Marine Artillerie (RAMa). Combat Engineers are Genie (RG) or Foreign Legion Engineers (REG). Armored Recon are Hussards (RH), Light Cavalry is Chasseurs metropolitains (RCh) or Infanterie Chars de Marine (RICM), and the Foreign Legion Cavalry is Cavalerie Etrangere (REC) or Spahis (RE). This last designation commemorates colonial Arab cavalry. Long Range Recon is Dragoon Portes (RDP). Helicopter units are Helicopteres de Combat (RHC) and Groupe-ment d'Helicopteres Legers (GHL). Support Regiments are Regiment de Commande-ment et de Soutien (RCS). Airborne forces include "Parachutistes" within the title and a "P" within the abbreviation. Mountain or Alpine troops add an "A".

BATTLESHIPS:
Battleships are expensive to build, operate, maintain, and sustain. For all the trouble they require, there is little that they can do that cannot be done better by smaller, more agile ships from farther away. A broadside of a dozen 16-inch guns a few miles off the coast that can level a grid square is impressive, but a single GPS-guided cruise missile from a Frigate 100 miles away gets the job done just as well- without the cost, both financial and political.

Basically, Battleships are just big targets that can only reach as far as their guns-- unlike Aircraft Carriers, which can reach many hundreds of miles out. One big battleship can be in one place at one time; for the same cost numerous Destroyers can be in many places at once-- and if a Destroyer sinks, there's more left over. Build Battleships at your own risk.

MUSEUM SHIPS:
Any vessel can be a museum ship. A nation can maintain up to three museum ships (of any types or combinations of types) per country level. However, if those Museum Ships are going to be kept ready for possible action, then you have to add up the points for it like normal, divide by 4, and it is part of your "Semi-Retired Naval Reserve". It takes six months to re-activate.

TRAINING VESSELS:
Training vessels for Naval Academies can be any type. Add up their points and divide by 2, and if it ever goes into combat it becomes a regular combatant and is charged in full.

Sailing-type Tall Ship training vessels are traditionally a luxury of wealthy nations. However, the experience they add, and the sense of cameraderie, are frequently considered worth the expense. 3 Points for a Tall Ship Acadamy Vessel.

The USMC from Division on Down
Now Complete
For those who care to know:

Right now the ideal USMC division doens't exist :D. That being said what is presented below is a roughly idealized modern USMC Division. What that means is that all battalions have all of their companies, all regiments have all of their battalions and all of them are in logical order. The real USMC organization looks a bit different especially in Recon and Artillery but mostly because those units are in flux. Also this has been idealized for uniform equipment distribution which, especially with Artillery currently, is not the case (Artillery units are currently replacing M198 with M777 and there are some units transitiong to HIMARS). Also in the current USMC organization certina additoinal combat elemtns (Force Recon and ANGLICO are consider MEF assets not controlled by the Division.
