This will be the out of character discussion thread for the game. Anything that doesn't fit in any of the other threads goes here.

I've built a spreadsheet containing a generic Order of Battle; it's pretty automated, outside of having to manually input the various special ratings (H, S and R). There's a calculator for those just in case anyone who uses it wants to have new ship classes.
Note that most of the ships are just hull points - I tend towards having fewer specialisations myself, and hopefully this will make things easier for people. Let me know if any of this needs adjusting or if any of you have questions.

The Black Star Consortium I just put in the mininations thread is intended as a moderator tool. I have no intention of controlling them, because I'd end up controlling both sides of a battle with them at some point.

The same sort of goes for Amazo-X - otherwise it'd be a pretty large conflict of interest.

Using the map system I proposed in the concept thread, I've placed the OOBs published so far (barring the Black Star, since they should probably be a moderator decision secret from the players). Following an X,Y axis format, Nashtar is at -6,4; the Orion Dominion is at 3,2, Endeavour is at 1,-4, and Amazo-X is at 2,6. Ernarn, per its fluff, has to be a near neighbor to Nashtar, so I put them at -7,3. I'll export the map and post it for approval and asking for extra hexes once there's something approaching a majority of players posted in the OOB thread.

Eh, screw it. Working map, with all currently posted OOB entries placed:

OK, so, thinking about order of battle, I'm planning a pretty straight port of the old SDNW4 Technocracy of Umeria.
3000 points to spend on the military, 500 to spend on national bonuses, and 100 to spend on planets, which are on a 1-10 scale?
I know the vote's over. Are there 'specials' on ships or are ships just based straight-up on point cost?
Can I have a link to the rules again? I don't want to hammer out a proper OOB post until I've had some time to work on it.

Ships have some limited special attributes - there's also a cap of size 50 total size (including specials!) unless you invest national points into improved shipyards.
Rule links are
here for the 100% official version and my ongoing edited version is
here. Note that there shouldn't be any actual rule differences between the two - just some of the formatting didn't carry over to the wiki version and I've moved stuff around.
It sounds obvious, but also check out other people's OOBs and the generic one posted above. The latter's just for a fleet, but I've got my entire mechanical OOB
here.

The Umerian order of battle was calibrated for a much larger (SDNW4) total point value, so there is no danger of any individual ship in the battleline surpassing fifty points, I think.

I probably won't be bothering, but I may give it a look.
Doing the arithmetic often helps me grasp rules that would be hopelessly confusing if I weren't juggling all the numbers in my head. I'm weird like that.

That's more than fine - I tend to be the same way myself, but it's there for reference.

To be clear, since I put 200 points into Improved Shipyards, that means I can have ships up to 70 points, yes?
And with 150 points in System Defences, I get 15 "orbital defences" in a 10-point system?

As to the ships - from my understanding, yes. I should hope so, too, because I've done the same thing
Regarding planetary defences, I'm pretty sure but not 100%.

Ace! though I just had the terrifying realisation that if I opt for 12 70-point dreadnoughts and 24 40-point battlecruisers, I've already burned through 1800 industrial points on capital ships alone. Well, I did say the Army was a poor relation to the Navy

Are there intersystem FTL transmissions in this universe, or do messages have to be carried by ships? I'm playing around with my OOB and wondering if I should leave room for dispatch boats.

Then you should be very glad I upped it to 3000.
It was 2000, but when I wrote the ground combat rules (which these originally didn't have) I just had the army bought out of the same pool and made the pool bigger rather than make a fourth category of points.

C3 allows for faster than light sensors, so it wouldn't make much sense to not have FTL comms.

Yo man i originally laid out a navy that would have 4000 points fully filled out to where I wanted it!
right now I am going with a 'mere' 1600 for the Navy, saying that the rest is either still in production, or "almost finished" and being outfitted before being launched in the next few turns.

Weapons of the Nashtari Armed Forces
Magnetic Accelerator Cannon - Essentially a giant railgun, these weapons are of such size that they must be spinal-mounted to be effective. Found on Dauntless class battleships and Guardian class cruisers, these weapons fire massive solid shells at relativistic velocities towards the enemy. The Dauntless class features three of these weapons in its forward arc, the barrage of which can destroy most escort-weight vessels outright.
Beam Cannon - The Nashtari beam cannon is a standard weapon on warships. Beam weaponry packs a significant punch, and takes up less internal space than a MAC. A beam cannon's lens is typically mounted in a ball mount turret. There are several different grades of beam cannon with varying power and traverse rates depending upon the weapon's role.
Standard Block III Bullshit Defeat Munition (BDM) - A specialized ordnance made in many different shell types to fit all Nashtari projectile weapons, from rifles and tank cannons to capital ship grade railguns, the Bullshit Defeat Munition is designed to combat magic, giant mecha, and similar bullshit.

Updated map, with Simon's and Elheru's factions. Once I have at least a name for your nation I'll roll you a location; no point doing it before I know what to put there.
Note that the map is still an initial WIP; once everyone's capitals are placed and we've staked out additional territory (note that you don't have to; a hex is big enough to host multiple systems) I can pretty it up considerably. Right now the only feature I've put in is the large nebula that Nashtar abuts, but I'm happy to put any requested stellar phenomena in the vicinity of the person who asks for it.

you can roll mine as a two, probably 3 hex area if you are going by the habitable areas for the UISC>
If you are going more by the general "explored/patrolled space" than its probably closer to 7 hexes

I don't think we should assign more than the capital sector until everyone is placed; else we greatly increase the risk of two players occupying the same territory at game start. (If I happen to roll two identical results I'll re-roll the second one, but odds of that are pretty bad.)

%$#@#!
I forgot to post the break down of National points before the edit timer expired. Ungh......
I was working on a big write up of plot stuff for each one, and had it on another document.
should have been this just for pure numbers.
NATIONAL 0500
IMPROVED COUNTER-ESPIONAGE 100
IMPROVED LOGISTICS 150
IMPROVED SHIPYARDS 150
DEEP SENSOR STATIONS 100

What are these deep space sensor stations people keep buying with nation points? I don't see them. "Improved Sensor Networks" used to be a thing in the early development of STGOD 2k8, but it got scrapped fairly quickly. I wouldn't mind putting something like that in, but for the people buying them what do you want your points to actually do?

I'll be honest, my original thought was trying to act as a protection against some A-Hole going:
"I SNEAK BUNCH OF CLOAKED SHIPS IN HA HA! I ATTACK YOU!"
but then I stop and remind myself we aren't all children any more, and most likely don't have to worry about stuff like that anymore....
so, Personally I'd toss the extra points into improved static defensive's for my planets

I was thinking, as mentioned in my OOB, that it's a network of sensor buoys that allow me to track ships, in my territory and give some early-warning of ships approaching my space, and make it easier to detect cloaked/steathy ships (logically, the better the stealth rating the less chance my network would have in spotting it.
But if we're not having deep-space sensor nets, then I'll dump those 100 into System Defences instead, giving me 250 total (mwahaha).
