Chick uses one error in the Koran to disprove it all. Talk about ad hoheim (sp). Does anyone know any mistakes made in the Bible? IIRC there a certain 6000 year old Earth one.

Flat Earth, Geocentric Solar System, a global flood (where did all the water come from?), and pi being 3, among others. Of course, what do you expect from an ancient book of tribal mythology? Of course, Chick fails to realize that that's what te Bible is.

I've heard the Pi = 3 thing, too, but not being mathematically inclined, it was something I'm not qualified to touch. Isn't Pi 3.14---> huge number of digits?

Pi is an irrational number, meaning that it goes on forever. There are an infinite amount of digits after the 3.14.

I've heard (remember I suck at math) that that's because it describes a "perfect circle". Is that true?

Actually, the 6000 year old earth was a concept made up by an Anglican archbishop by the name of James Ussher. He was an influential church official attempting to place some recent archaeological findings (stratographic data interpreted then as multiple flood events along with stone tools and signs of previous habitation in Europe before the Exodus -- all clearly impossible by the thinking of that time) into a logical place on the Biblical timeline.

He failed, but came up with the age of the earth by counting "begats" and guessing the period of the gaps in the timeline that resulted (essentially, he prayed until a number entered his head, which he attributed to an angel giving him the information). His final conclusion was that the earth was created in late 4004 BC; Townsend and Lightfoot (Bible scholars) elaborate this to 9 AM of October 23 in that year. The Catholic Church, strangely enough (given their strained relations with the Anglicans), buys into this date completely and declares it canon, and thus was a piece of true stupidity born.

While the Bible is flat-out wrong in many areas, the 6000 year-old earth thing is of even more dubious manufacture, like some other elements incorporated into Christianity.

Pi is most commonly used to measure circles and spheres. It is a kind of conversion factor between their radii, area, volume, circumference, and surface areas.

Take a circle perimeter. Divide by its diameter. You get pi.

It's a simple experiment. You can do it at home with a cilindrical jar.

Now, the thing is that, no matter how accurate the measurements, you'll never get a final number, nor a number which can be represented as a fraction. That's the definition of irrational. There are infinite irrational numbers (more, in fact, than rational).

For example, the square root of two is irrational.
