Fair enough. The military is populated with vast amounts of ghost stories, for obvious reasons. Although I've never heard any from NZ before. Tell your friend, then next time the see something like a ghost floating down the hall, go try to kick it in the 'nads. You'd be surprised how much inner strength and fortitude a person can get from even seeming to kick a thing in the 'nads. And I'm serious, too. If it's a floaty blob and you think it's talking - kick it in the 'nads. At the very least, if the thing's still there afterwards and talking, you have a real find on your hands. *laugh*

That works too. I was in an old estate in Vermont with a couple of guys who had asked me to come with them on their ghost hunt as a fairly well-versed folklorist and skeptic. At one point, one of them gasped and pointed to a brightly-lit spot of fog floating in the corner of one room. I walked right up to it and waggled my fingers through it. Nothing happened, of course, but the rest of the guys were shrieking like I was about to get hauled off by all the chariots of hades. It was hilarious.

The sad thing is that when they recollect that incident, they will tell everyone how they saw a ghost, and you saw it too, but you were brave enough to approach it.

I'm used to it. I just do it for the stories, mainly. I volunteer part time with a local boy's club, take the kids camping, that sort of thing. They've come to really like my stories. I mention this to forestall the inevitable "why did you bother associating with such lunatics in the first place?" question. Funny thing is, even ten year old kids understand that ghost stories are just made up to scare people. And more than half of them comprehend that, although they go to church, the bible is just a collection of stories.

There is hope for the next generation, it seems.
