Alright, anyone got a reason for this?

Post by Straha »

I heard this last night on the radio and was wondering if anyone here could solve the problem.

A bunch of Ham Radio operators have been experiencing something they call 'long delayed echoes' where they make a broadcast, end it, and then ~7 seconds later (Seven seconds later from when they transmitted it, not the end of the broadcast) there is a faint echo of what they said coming in over the radio. Now Radio waves go at the speed of light so they shouldn't be hearing anything at all like this, ever. So, anyone have a plausible explanation?

I believe that's the result of the radio signal bouncing off the moon.

Unless I'm very very sadly mistaken they do travel at the speed of light. If you're asking why I added that bit of it it's because the radio wave travels around the Earth ~six times a second so that couldn't account for it.

As for it bouncing off the moon... that may be, but the moon is only ~300,000 KM away from the Earth and the delays were at least five seconds long on the recordings at least.

Since radio waves are electromagnetic radiation, just like light, you would be correct.

Ham Radio being what, the amateur sets? Those use radio waves with a wavelength that lends itself to all sorts of interesting effects, like reflecting off of atmospheric phenomena to go beyond the horizon and other nifty stuff, and if the conditions are right, they can reflect back after a while. I don't remember much about my radio comm classes, but so I may be off somewhat, but that's the best explanation I can come up with.

The weak LDE might posibly be the reciever picking up a second lunar echo. Signal bounces off moon, bounces off earth, bounces off moon again reciever picks up signal. I don't know. UHF/VHF can do some some freaky shit.

Yeah, I checked up on that. I just never knew/forgot that.

Easy. They bounced off an alien mothership on its way to conquer Earth. :D

Have a very nice day.

Bah, that's because you think they're cute japanese girls with inhumanly large eyes.

Probably the moon, a base for the anime females, we must put an end to it. Gridfire it from hyperspace, it's the only way to be sure.
