Say what?

Post by Vympel »

This is what my friend emailed me the Great Flood; tell me if I've got it wrong/right:

He said: "Wrap your head around this. All around the world, fossils of marine organisms and such have been found exposed in rock layers high in the mountains. Explain.Wait, let me save you time, and deposit and a straw-man. Once upon a time, those mountains were at sealevel, then with the shifting of the plates, they became mountains, this would conservatively take about 200million years. The biggest problem here however, is that the rate of erosion would have destroyed the exposed fossilised remains of any exposed fossil."

I had no idea what he was trying to say.

I responded thusly: Were you even thinking when you posted this? If the Flood deposited sea shells on a mountian, then why were the sea shells not the first things to go during the process of errosion?

The fossils are found in the deeper layers because they were dropped MILLIONS of years ago and since then have been burried and then pushed up by the force of the continental plates pushing against each other. DER. They WEREN'T exposed for 200 million years to erosion. It took me awhile to figure out what exactly you were saying with this. Essentially, you debunked your own point.

I am a science novice, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ah crap- I forgot to mention- he is arguing that science SUPPORTS the Great Flood. Supposedly.

ROLMAO, of course.

Ahh Kindly ask him why no one else but Noaha noticed and why we still have the fatal dieses and parasites inculding the quickly fatal ones that we know exists supposdly before the great flood that we see after, 2 of every animal had to be carring every single one that affected them after the fact as well as the humans

Oh not to worry- I sent him a synopsis of the massive problems with the Great Flood stupidity after he sent this email- i just had no idea what he was trying to say- and still don't. Was I right?

On the button Vympel. Not that he'll understand it of course - his brain will shut down the moment he sees that your argument debunks the flood. One of the hardships of being allergic to logic I suppose :D
data_link has resigned from the board after proving himself to be a relentless strawman-using asshole in this thread and being too much of a pussy to deal with the inevitable flames. Buh-bye.

Like any YEC, he's being a blithering idiot. He is arguing that deep-sea fossils in the mountains are proof that they were pushed up only recently. What he fails to recognize is that geological and radiometric dating techniques still work on mountainous terrain, and they are very very old, not very young. He also fails to note that mountain erosion is rather slow, which is why the mountains look craggy (small observation that probably escaped his notice). In fact, mountain erosion is fine proof of their age, since it is irregular, ie- formed by rivers as they drive down the sides. If it were caused by a single flood, it would be uniform across the entire mountain face. Does he have any explanation for why the Rockies are so much less eroded than the Appalachians if they are both the same age, dated and eroded from the same flood?

You know, for many years I have felt that the Bible was allegory and that the foundation for true comprehension lies in the realm of human understanding. I have always felt that Biblical Literalists were basically just misguided, little else.

Since being here, reading past Fundie posts and watching others come here to be hacked; participating in the cross-border raids with CreationWeb-- and now this crack baby that Vympel shows us-- I admit I had not truly appreciated how incredibly fucking ignorant these people are. It hurts my mind to think about it, and I was wholly blind to the depths of stupidity I see evinced here.

Do these people still believe in dragons? Santa Claus? That Michael Jackson just "likes kids a lot"?
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

I think he's confused. IIRC, there is evidence for a localized flood in the Mediteranean (Which, as far as Biblical peoples were concerned, was the entire world). But he's taking it WAAAY too far.

If I was you, I'd just tell him impossiblities with a worldwide flood, like where the water came from, how Noah built this boat, how the fossil record is inconsistent with a global flood, how older trees survived the flood, and how Noah got these animals back to their habitats, and tell him to find a rebttal to those.

The big problem I have with the flood is how did two of every animals reproduce to a health level of genetic diversity. Of course YEC types probably dont think about that.

I don't think he knew what he was typing when we wrote that honestly. Still no reply. Happy to know I got it right though :)

Biblical stupidity question- how could the writers be so dumb as to think that a mere 40 feet of water would cover the continents?

Because it's not literal. It's just a story so they didn't pay much attention to the math involved. It's like how did Khan know Chekov if they had never met when Khan was on the Enterprise?
