What does that sound like?Uraniun235 wrote:Can you hear that? That is the sound of the anti-nuclear shithead brigade simultaneously experiencing a 20% rise in blood pressure.
I have my doubts it'll ever actually happen.

What's that, Mr. Martian? You have an Illudium Pu-36 Explosive Space Modulator? Well, I have a 50-megaton Artificial Sunrise! Suck it down, beyotch!wautd wrote:Does this mean we can finally nuke the shit out of Mars?

Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, the shape-shifting Master of Darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil,

This isn't exactly new, you know? NASA's been talking developing nuclear propulsion for future space missions for years and even awarded a contract to develop JIMO (which would've been nuclear-propelled, but then it got the axe, like a whole lot of other robotic programs . . . all in favor of the Bush "vision.") to Northrop-Grumman. (And JIMO, and the bigger Project Prometheus have been bounced around since at least 2003.)Shinova wrote:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4329645.stm
There will doubtless be protests and opposition to the use of nuclear power in space. Its value for deep space probes is undeniable, but critics fear that that could open a back door to nuclear power in space for the military as well.
Would that be so bad? I'm not seeing much advantage to having nuclear missiles in space, even if there were a semi-plausible link between nuclear reactors and nuclear missiles, which there isn't.
The main reaction I see whenever someone talks about putting anything nuclear in space, even an RTG, is "what if it explodes?", where "it" refers to either the reactor or the rocket used to lauch it into space. It seems to be taken for granted that an explosion near a nuclear reactor would release such vast amounts of radiation that we'd all be growing extra arms out of our asses.

that's mostly baseless fear mongering. as i understand it, most nuclear reactors use enough fissible material to generate power, but not enough to cause any type of tremendous explosion or contaminate a countryside if something went wrong. especially given all the failsafes modern nuclear reactors incorporate.sketerpot wrote:

When did Bush axe they are still talking about the program at NASA . The program in 04 was transfered to Exploration Systems Enterprise which is a seperate agency from NASA yet still interface with NASA.Admiral Valdemar wrote:They were meant to have a Jupiter mission this year that used a nuke reactor and would be the largest spacecraft made yet, but guess what? Bush axed it.

Why? The idea of my comment was that the Discovery's an nuclear-powered spacecraft... IIRC...Drooling Iguana wrote:You have my sympathies.Elheru Aran wrote:Ironically enough, regarding the Jupiter mission, I just saw 2001: A Space Odyssey last night...

People are idiots and assholes, and wouldn't know a good idea if it striped naked and started having sex with a pair of supermodels in front of them. What, precisely, are militaries going to do with nuclear shit in space? Here's a hint: Nothing. We can't start any shit without the President's head being immediately placed on a pike afterwards, and nobody else can try anything because we'd nuke their asses faster than Trekkie cuming at the sight of Jeri Ryan's naked tits.
So, for once, let NASA play with nuclear reactors. Let them actually explore the fucking solar system for once. Get some glory back under our belt, for fuck's sake. I want to humanity go back to the fucking moon within my lifetime, and at our present rate, it ain't gonna happen.
