The Cliff notes version:

Christian Fundamentalists take over the US, create a Nazi Germany like government. The Native Americans flee to Canada and Mexico. Women & blacks are slaves, Jews Roman Catholics, Mormons, and all other Minorities are exterminated, and the Military is now got an SS type branch called the "Avenging Angels" who are known for killing off everyone in Los Angles, San Francisco. Utah, etc.

The Story Focuses on a sex slave (called Handmaidens), who the daughter of an executed feminist writer, her life under the Republic and her escape to Canada. Some how the Angels never manage to invade Canada or Mexico sucessfully (Not for lack of trying),

Handmaid's tale is a Morality play.

all the massacures happen off camera (Unless you count the executions of the main character's family). We know that the Indians eventually beat the Republic of Gilaed because they write the Intro and the Epilog (Something they fucked up and forgot to do in hte movie version).

700 club?

R'yleth or Innsmouth

Aren't they related to our lovecraftian friend with the tentacles?

R'lyeh is where you'll find squidface (should you be foolish enough to look).

R'yleth sounds like it was corrupted with Ryloth, where you get Twi'leks from.

Handmaid's Tale was one of my favorite reads! It sure gets you angry though when you read about the mysogyny, the abuses, and fundie mentality. It was written in the 80s when there was a sudden surge in American fundie activities. It sure got a lot of attention back then!
