I would have to go with Uraniun235s comment to a large extent.
I am an egotist, blame evolution:
I would give my life to save the species, or significantly improve its odds.
I would like to think I had the courage to give my life for k deserving people, but if not at least some of them are closely related to me in spirit or genes, I seriously doubt my ability to make that choice.

Depends on who they are. I sure as hell aren't going to give my life for a group of rapists, terrorists and nazis,.

It would be easy for me to say I would kill myself to save the lives of strangers, without any other person knowing, and I can entertain myself with that thought for as long as I wish. But the truth is, if I was faced with the decision, my cowardice would get the best of me and I'd throw all my reasons to the wind and pretend like I had an excuse. I should sacrafice myself, but I don't think at this point of my life I am strong enough to positively say I would. More or less entertaining myself at the thought that I am the model human being would be a bluff.

I would definitely throw myself away to save a thousand others. Not just an instinct for the race to go on, but I think that if the people live, all the better for them. In the long run, I may be remembered, anyways. :P

All I can say is I don't know. If it was a spur-of-the-moment reaction, then yes, I most likely would. Given time to think about it, I can't be as sure that I would be able to sacrifice myself. Morally, I know I should, but morals are much easier to abstractly declare than actively follow. I do agree that it would also depend on who the people were. If they were people I know, names rather than faces, I would be more inclined to sacrifice myself to save them.

Why isn’t that ever an issue of politics? Because you don’t live in a democracy. You live in a plutocracy. Money rules.

I am waiting for patkelly to wander in and declare that we all would not do it because we are not motivated by pleasure, which, we all know, is the ultimate motivator.
Anyway, if given no time, I probably would, but if given time, I most likely would not.

My own opinion (which I know you've all been dying to hear) is that I would not sacrifice myself. Why? Because I know that if I sacrifice myself to save them, I'm not going to be around to care if they're alive. ON the other hand, if I walk away, I AM going to be around to care that I'm alive.

I might, but it depends on who. I won't save Klansmen or neo-Nazis, that's for sure.
