Buddhist Fundie?

Post by haas mark »

Yesterday on my way to bed (.....yes, I do actually sleep sometimes....), I was "caught" by this Buddhist guy. I was merely minding my own business, but he decided that I was someone to talk. He told me what Darma (whatever that is) has to do with politics, philosophy, et cetera. He also gave me a book to read (which I WILL read, just to see what it has to say), explaining the religion and whatnot.

Commendable, though, that he decided to keep talking after I said, "No thanks, I think I'll pass." Know that I'm not comfortable with being as ruthless as some of you guys, and just listened.

Has anyone else had something like this happen before?

Dharma is the way of law, and originally comes from Hinduism. Within Hinduism, it is the branch that requires a trip to the Ganges river and is ultra-conservative.

Within Buddhism, it's probably from the Southeastern, traditional style, which teaches the middle way and the four noble truths. The middle way is to never go to extremes, neither indulgence nor asceticism, but rather to take the mean path. The four noble truths are dukkha, tanha, cessation, and way. dukkha means life is suffering, tanha means thirst or that desire causes suffering, cessation is that there is a way out of suffering, and way is the eight-fold path of Buddhism. I don't recall the eight-fold path, though, but that should give a start.

A fundie is someone who has his head completely buried in his own asshole, and refuses to see the truth even when it hits him between the legs. As this Buddhist guy was merely preaching, I don't think that is evidence of him being a fundie. It's probably due to the high correlation between preachiness and fundieness in the Christian tradition that made you assume this guy was a fundie as well.

Probably so.....but his insistence that I email him after reading the book makes me wonder...

So he wants you to convert. No biggie. Just don't.

He himself may be a recent convert; when someone converts they get really gung-ho and like to share their experience with others, seeking validity and fellowship. It's usually a harmless phase that passes, and the guy is just enthused about something new and cool in his life. No biggie.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

Funny, I don't remember Dharma being particularly conservative.

Dharma means "truth"...unsurprisingly, Hinduism and Buddhism have definitions of the truth.
