Been hit with a Whammy
Being a bio student, I get caught up in debates about ID. Now what I wasn't expecting was someone telling me that Selective Breeding and a person's choice in mates is a memetic process, not evolutionary. On the account of selective breeding, I know he's wrong because we choose what is fit or not in the animal/plant and breed that to dominance. But I'm not very strong in sociology, so I have no way of refuting that or even checking how truthful that is. Any words of advice?

Wikipedia gives the meme as the unit of cultural transmission, so I take it his claim -- a person's choice in mate is memetic -- is really stating a person's choice in a mate is cultural. I don't see a contradiction between saying a person's choice in mate is cultural and a person's choice in mate is an evolutionary process, because human culture is the result of the evolutionary process; thus, human evolutionary urges would be incorporated into cultures -- i.e., cultures generally favor wide hips in women.

It's absolute proof it is right, because there's no other reason why the Peacock would be the way it is. It was bred by memetic forces, not what made it optimal for it's enviroment; now it can't fly. And of course culture itself is a product of our evolutionary heritage. Genes infuence memes and memes influence genes. If you're interested in this kind of thing, I highly recomend The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins, blew my socks off first time I read it, and anyone interested in sociobiology should start with that.
