O Enginseers! Need help re HPV

Post by Elheru Aran »

Heyo~

For my Sculpture class, we'll be making an 'art-mobile', constituting a piece of art, that you can ride about-- basically a fancy human-powered vehicle. Bit schlocky, I know, but anyway.

I've been working on some means of propulsion for my designs. Right now I have three, and I was wondering what the mechanically inclined among this board's denizens would think of these...

Bear in mind that these will be welded together (rather amateurishly by myself) as well as forged where necessary, primarily from steel rod or pipe.

My main concerns are ease of building, assembly, and use.

Right now these are just the propulsion methods in question-- no frames or anything yet, we won't be starting on the art-mobile till November, but I want to see if my 'motors' make sense...

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words!

Based off an exercise bike (you might've seen, or used, one like this). The mechanics should be obvious enough. The main problem is steering...

Ran with an idea I saw in an old movie for the top drawing. The bottom one is an modification for use with a three- or four-wheeled vehicle, with a brake concept as well.

Essentially a modified, larger version of the treadle mechanism of old-fashioned sewing machines. I'm thinking to use long automobile or truck toothed belts-- cheaper than a bike chain, and easier to use...

So. Doable? Which ones would you recommend?

I fully appreciate your answers....
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.
