Exorcism of Emily Rose
The movie "Exorcism of Emily Rose" starts this week in germany. Some of you might know that the film is based on a real incident in germany 30 years ago. There was an article about the film & the incident in our local newspaper today. The author said that exorcism is on the rise again in the US. Is this true or bullshit? A member of the local clergy(they were involved in the real incident) tried to defend exorcism claiming that supernatural things exist.

I haven't heard about any cases of exorcisms being performed here in the States- not by actual clergy, anyways. Psycho parents chaining their own children in cages is different.

I believe there was a much more recent fatal exorcism in one of the former Soviet states; there was a thread here about it but I'm too lazy to search.

The roman catholic church still practices exorcism. The exorcism lessons at the vatican university are very popular. There is also a pretty famous exorcist living in the ukraine.Darth Wong wrote:I believe there was a much more recent fatal exorcism in one of the former Soviet states; there was a thread here about it but I'm too lazy to search.

It was based on a case in Germany. IIRC the girl was a schizophrenic, and the stupid priest just served to reinforced her delusion giving her excuse to act that way. After all it wasn't her fault. She was possessed by demons.
She starved to death and the stupid priest and her god damn parents were jailed. The Catholic Church later disavowed the exorcism, saying that the exorcising priest did it without the RCC's permission. After all, the case didn't fit the criteria of a "real" possession as there was no telekinesis involved (one of the criteria the RCC uses to distinguish possession from mental illness).

The principles of exorcism are still practiced widely among new agers and other religious groups - even aboriginal and asian religions. That is, the idea that there are evil spirits in the world and that they can be shooed out of people, places, and things. I've met more than a few ghost hunters who refused to enter 'haunted' places until they performed various silly rituals to rid the place of the bad spirits and only leave the (I presume) gentle ones they wanted to have meaningful spiritual contact with.
I just realized I could have saved myself a few minutes of typing by writing the word 'loons' and hitting reply, but there you go.

Um yes. Faith healers and exorcists are very popular here in the Philippines. Nutters, the lot of them.

I believe you're referring to the exorcism that took place in Romania (which was a satellite state to the Soviet Union but never a Soviet state per se) during which a trainee nun died (IIRC, she was crucified).Darth Wong wrote:I believe there was a much more recent fatal exorcism in one of the former Soviet states; there was a thread here about it but I'm too lazy to search.
