On Subterrenes

I was brainstorming some ideias for a sci-fi universe of mine, when I hit upon the stupid concept of subterrenes, and I wondered, how about it?

For those that don't go around the conspiracy theory sites much (and let me tell you I don't!), a subterrene is a submarine on the ground, suposedly used by the American Government to creat vast tunels below ground. The technology functions by putting a nuclear reactor at the front of a structure, using the heat produced to make the tunel, the plasma "vitrifying" the walls and PRONTO! Instant tunel without any associated support structures!

This is all bullshit, but I am interested on your comments about this technology, so please, go right ahead... Can it be done in the future? Would it be advantageous in relation to standard techniques?

Depends in the future if we have enough energy too superheart plasma too burrow through. As for engieerical design I have no idea.

Frankly I have no ideia! The conspiracy theorists never thought of that!

EDIT:
But, I think in contact with the hot plasma of the reactor it gets melted and becomes part of the tunnel...

You can think of it as a "brain bug"-ed China Syndrome tunneling.
