Genpets

Have any of you seen these things?

It's a really creepy social statement. (per Deviant Art

I thought it would be interesting to see how people here would think had this been real. What ethical or moral dilemas you'd feel you'd be confronted with if you or a child were faced with purchasing a "Genpet."

I am kind of conflicted about the idea, personally. I really welcome advancement in technology, and science. However, the idea of growing a pet and shrink wrapping it and selling it while it's in "hibernation" makes me feel really awkward. I guess it would be along the lines of "Would a Human Clone have rights?" Which is an obvious yes for me, but this isn't a human and animal "rights" seem to be spotty currently. Where's Pam Anderson when you need her.

This has to be a joke or a movie promo. This can't be real. I am not joking, this really freaks me out.

Methinks you should read the opening post more clearly. He specifically states it's not real.

It's not real; it's a statement piece. Very interesting.
"The rest of the poem plays upon that pun. On the contrary, says Catullus, although my verses are soft (molliculi ac parum pudici in line 8, reversing the play on words), they can arouse even limp old men. Should Furius and Aurelius have any remaining doubts about Catullus' virility, he offers to fuck them anally and orally to prove otherwise." - Catullus 16, Wikipedia

The bio-engineering part is ok. Those things look really creapy.

I know: It wasn't my intent to imply that you were anti-bioengineering, I was insinuating that the people who made that site were.

Yes, I have to agree, but I still maintain that this site is probably related to a movie.

As you suggest, that is not incompatible with the anti-boiengineering thing. Well, I guess we'll just see.

Good lord, he linked to the damn artist's statement. Read that before you speculate.

Missed the link.

And having read the article, it still comes over as anti-bioengineering despite his protestations to the contrary.

Given the repeated highlighting of the letters 're' in various places and the name GenPets, i think this may have something to do with the RePet pet-copying corporation in The 6th Day. If anything, all the anti-bioengineering examples in that movie probably provided a little inspiration.
Robert Gilruth to Max Faget on the Apollo program: “Max, we’re going to go back there one day, and when we do, they’re going to find out how tough it is.”
