What size Bomb is equal to a 16" HE shell?
I always pondered that question. So what size bomb in pounds or Kilo is eqaul to a 16" HE shell?

According to this wiki article the weight of an Iowa class broadside is 24,300 lbs, divide that by nine guns and you get 2700 lbs. So the closest bomb equivilant I believe is the 2,000lb bomb.Wanderer wrote:I always pondered that question. So what size bomb in pounds or Kilo is eqaul to a 16" HE shell?

Thanks... Holy! That gives some interesting weight in sci-fi vs matches.Cpl Kendall wrote:According to this wiki article the weight of an Iowa class broadside is 24,300 lbs, divide that by nine guns and you get 2700 lbs. Not that big compared to a 2000lb bomb (although of course the danger zone is still pretty large), but you can get some huge penetration, which you'd need a pretty specialised bomb for.Wanderer wrote:How big would the blast radius be?Beowulf wrote:A high-capacity 16" shell had 153.5 lbs of explosive, or less than a 500lb bomb, which 45% explosive by weight.
In general though BBs are pretty crap at HE delivery, nor is the ROF all that great.

The 2700lb rounds are Armor Piercing rounds. They have roughly 40lbs of explosive each, or to put it another way, have less explosive than a 1000lb bomb, for the entire broadside.Cpl Kendall wrote:According to this wiki article the weight of an Iowa class broadside is 24,300 lbs, divide that by nine guns and you get 2700 lbs. Ahh that makes sense the article doesn't say anything about that. One of the perils of using Wikipedia as a source I guess.Beowulf wrote:

Converting that broadside to HE Shells, how much explosive is being thrown out.Beowulf wrote:The 2700lb rounds are Armor Piercing rounds. 9 shells x 155 lbs ~= 1500 lbs. Or about 3 1000lb bombs. These would be the high capacity shells I first mentioned.Wanderer wrote:Converting that broadside to HE Shells, how much explosive is being thrown out.

Artillery shells inflict most damage by high speed fragmentation even in the case of high capacity bombardment rounds. Because of that a direct comparison with Mk80 series General Purpose bombs will never be accurate. An artillery shell with more then about 10% explosive by weight is a very rare thing.

Yeah? I thought that exactly that would get it a decent distance through earth say (assuming the fuse is set correctly) compared to your average iron bomb. I'm happy to be corrected though.phongn wrote:I don't think you'll get very good penetration with a 16" HE round since so much of it is steel.
