Elderly people, firemen and even cops are mainly sympathetic, but why piss away the sympathy and goodwill by being demanding pricks?

The world is a rough and tough place, full of danger and hazards, and much more so in the past then today. For those people to have survived so long demands that they must be supreme badasses, as otherwise they would have been killed off long ago. So you need to be nice and respectful or else they will beat the everliving shit out of you with their replacement hip and or walker.

Or just lucky like Inspector Cluso and Frank Drebin: alway blundering through many deadly hazards, inspite of themselves. :P

Don't forget the " classic" shotgun or sword canes.

I'll give up my seat (or my backpack's seat) to anyone that asks. it doesnt even have to be too politely asked, seeing as how I werar headphones and try to give off a "dont fucking look at me" vibe when Im on the bus. poking me with a stick, however will get you some form of sign language and nothing more.
I usually try to show some respect for my elders, but it really irritates me when people start acting entitled to anything

As I've said elsewhere, there's a difference between voluntarily giving to charity, being asked for charity, and having charity demanded of you.

I was on the streetcar one time. I was really involved reading my book, wasn't really paying attention to my surroundings at all. I was standing. Everybody was packed like sardines... if you've never been on a packed streetcar or subway before, it's bad enough women complain about being groped all the time, we're talking close enough to smell whether someone's taken a shower.

So, the streetcar stops. I get out of the way as much as I can, as I usually do, but because I'm standing right in front of the door with little room, there's not much I can do but move a few inches to my right or left. Enough for someone to push their way by. Then I hear someone muttering.

"You're an asshole."

I turn around, and there's this old fucker with a walker, waiting for me to get off the streetcar and help him. Literally the only way he was getting out was if people got off the streetcar and made way for him, that's how packed we were. Now somehow I'm an asshole, because I was involved in my book and I don't have eyes in the back of my head? Give me a break.

Everyday activities like walking and standing for protracted periods of time can be quite painful for elderly people; that's why I will give them a seat, or let them go in front of me in lines...within reason, naturally. Night before last, I let an older lady go in front of me in a long grocery store line; she only had two items, and it made her so happy.

I don't neccessarily respect old people more, but I show them more consideration and courtesy due to their physical condition.
