People like this, when it comes right down to it, believe that God can violate logic itself. In their minds, God can make parallel lines meet because he is omnipotent.CaptJodan wrote:To them, the fact that a large portion of religious beliefs have some kind of flooding story or myth signals all the proof they need that it occured, irregardless of contrary civilizations like Egypt which flooded every year and thus made it a non-event.

Wait a minute. 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' isn't a bad movie.Dooey Jo wrote:That flood crap is pretty funny. It's as if they sat down and watched every bad disaster movie out there, took all the worst parts and combined them into one brain-killing story and said: "Hey, this is so stupid it must be true!"

Coming up, in the Bible: The story of Jebediah, who went into the Earth's core and threw a holy handgrenade at it because God had stopped its rotation.

And is that why they don't listen to logical arguments, because they don't believe logic is absolute?Darth Wong wrote:People like this, when it comes right down to it, believe that God can violate logic itself. Yes. The problem is that they're contradicting themselves: how do they tell a given proposition either agrees with or is at odds with the Bible? Logic. So they implicitly agree to the supremacy of logic in determining truth while explicitly denying it.OmegaGuy wrote:And is that why they don't listen to logical arguments, because they don't believe logic is absolute?

A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Ther are two recurring themes I love the more I read about this park
a.) EVerything evidently was "pre programmed" as if the Earth were somehow the Matrix, and simply to introduce all the bad shit after Original Sin God just had to change the program or unveil all the hidden coding he'd added in. (Those two possibilities sum up the main ways they dismiss all the objections to their view)
b.) the constant defense of incest in all its forms.
Really you cannot sum up the absurdity of the place any better than that.

My big concern is simply the amount of money. Reading about how Donald Johanson scraped up money to go to Hadar and how much money people like Pat have available to him. I have simply no idea how you fight such people!

Can logic defeat fanaticism? Unfortunately not. At the end of the day, the greatest weapon secularists have against religious fanaticism is not logic; it is the obnoxious tendency of religious people to try and force others to change the way they live their lives.
If creationists spent all of their time and energy attacking evolution rather than trying to take away peoples' porn and generally dictate peoples' private lives to them, they'd actually be a lot more successful. It's that obnoxious behaviour that drives so many people out of their waiting arms, not the horrible gaps in their logic. Most ordinary people don't really know what logic is, but they do know what it means when somebody else is constantly sticking his nose into their business.
