They showed gay porn videos to men who rated themselves completely straight on the Kinsey scale, and found that the homophobic guys got... distinctly aroused. Here's the abstract:
Abstract: The authors investigated the role of homosexual arousal in exclusively heterosexual men who ad- mitted negative affect toward homosexual individuals. Participants consisted of a group of homo- phobic men (n = 35) and a group of nonhomophobic men (n = 29); they were assigned to groups on the basis of their scores on the Index of Homophobia (W. W. Hudson & W. A. Ricketts, 1980). The men were exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosex- ual, and lesbian videotapes, and changes in penile circumference were monitored. They also com- pleted an Aggression Questionnaire (A. H. Buss & M. Perry, 1992 ). Both groups exhibited increases in penile circumference to the heterosexual and female homosexual videos. Only the homophobic men showed an increase in penile erection to male homosexual stimuli. The groups did not differ in aggression. Homophobia is apparently associated with homosexual arousal that the homophobic individual is either unaware of or denies.

Society can be so wonderful sometimes. It seems that in some places, there are simply no well-adjusted, non-repressed normal people.
Well, as we're finding out recently, this certainly seems the case in the Republikan Party.

Hm...'pervert' is not a well-defined term, though.
My theory is that everyone is bisexual, neither straight nor gay; they're just either in denial, or haven't seen a sufficiently sexy man/woman yet.

The tenth Doctor seems to offer support for that notion -- but you'll notice that, in the study, both groups were more aroused by heterosexual and lesbian porn. If sexual orientation is a spectrum, then it's not as simple a spectrum as the various "everyone is bisexual" theories tend to imply.

Nothing is ever as simple as a three-word sentence can imply. I don't think I could come even close to describing the nature of human sexuality in any kind of complete, meaningful sense - I'm just fairly sure that for all non-asexual males, there is at least one female and at least one male they would have sex with, and vice versa for females.
It is possible that homophobes are reacting with fear, anxiety etc, as those tend to produce some signs of arousal too. While I would expect homophobes to be closet cases more than their non-homophobic equivalents, I strongly doubt that all of them are getting turned on by it as much as they are merely reacting.

They produce signs of physiological arousal like increased heart rate, increased blood flow to the limbs and vital organs (IIRC) but increased blood flow to the penis would be counterproductive to escaping a potential predator... I would need to check and see if the penis is typically significantly affected by normal anxiety

It is possible that viewing homosexual stimuli causes negative emotions such as anxiety in homophobic men but not in nonhomophobic men. Because anxiety has been shown to enhance arousal and erection, this theory would predict increases in erection in homophobic men. Furthermore, it would indicate that a response to homosexual stimuli is a function of the threat condition rather than sexual arousal per se.[/quote]

I have trouble believing that. When I go into fight/flight mode, my nether regions do exactly the opposite of what they do when I'm aroused - balls try to climb up into my abdomen and my penis shrinks. I know, I know - anecdotal evidence isn't - but I'd like to see an thoroughly verified and peer reviewed study before I believe it.

Seconded for truth. Maybe it does happen differently for others, but my experiences basically mirror Feil's in regards to any kind of stressful situation.
How often do we hear right-wing nutjobs say things like, "homosexuality is a choice!" It's funny, as a straight guy, doing something gay just isn't in my realm of mental comprehension. The very fact that they can say it's a "choice" must mean, on some level, their choosing not to act on gay impulses. That's how I've always thought of it...
I think anyone who pays attention to all the Republicans/social conservatives/whatever-it's-the-same-thing-pretty-much soliciting gay sex reached the same conclusion, although admittedly not through any scientific study

My dick shriveled up like a roll of quarters last time I was in fight/flight mode. My nutsack also shrank. There's one problem with finding out whether this is a common trait, though: How do you scare someone or make them anxious in a lab experiment? Surely they would know you aren't really going to harm them.

Shock tactics? Suddenly screaming or lunging at someone does wonders for the old ape instincts. (Same as being scared from a rope for a millisecond until you figure out that it's not a snake).
