Did you not bother reading your own links? The health benefits come from flavonoids in the beer, much as the health benefits of red wine come from antioxidants from the grapes. There's no reason to believe alcohol consumption does a goddamned thing for you other than shrinking your brain and damaging your liver, and the only reason people experience health benefits from these substances is that their diets are seriously deficient. Meat-and-potatoes morons probably need to drink beer or wine just to get some of the things they should be getting from fruits and vegetables. His Divine Shadow wrote:Googled a bit:Darth Servo wrote:One big problem with those "red wine helps the heart" studies is the people spouting them never seem to present a study showing similar results from beer.

So maybe there's something to beer too?
Binge drinking - have you ever done it?

I'm a binge drinker and probably an alcoholic. I used to drink heavily two of three times a week and every one in awhile I won't even drink on the weekends. This weekend our platoon, well about eight guys total floated a keg and a few racks of beer. It was a good time even when I was running with the empty keg over my head down the street. Alot of it has to do with army culture and the sheer amount of stress before we deploy, once sixteen days left. I look forward to fifteen months of sobriety too bad it'll be in Iraq.

You say this without a visible sign of remorse or regret over this fact. Have you considered finding better, less health-destroying ways to cope with the stress? Sure it helps you now, but what about the later physical consequences?Captain Lennox wrote:I'm a binge drinker and probably an alcoholic.

I'm a little surprised at some of the classifications. For example, several studies list someone who drinks 21 drinks per week as just a heavy social social drinker. I would have classed that as a functional alcoholic...

I am a lightweight. Like... really light. On my first date, I had one and a half drinks. It was enough to make me feel sick for about a couple hours. That said, I have binged before but unintentionally and I can probably count the number of times I've done it with one hand. Because of how easily intoxicated I become from so little alcohol, I find it's quite a balancing act trying to find a good medium between consume a relatively safe, moderate amount of alcohol and going a little too far. I typically have to explain to people multiple times of how easily drunk I get especially in a setting of friends drinking way more than I can handle and getting peer pressured like crazy to drink, etc.

I probably fall under the banner of binge-drinking at least once and more usually twice a week. Why? I enjoy it.
Certainly I drink far less than I used to (mainly because the hangovers are much worse these days) but have no real inclination to give it up entirely.
In my teens/early 20s, I used to get pretty hammered (say 8 pints+) 5 or 6 nights a week. I had a hell of a lot of fun and hurt no one.
If it causes me health problems in the future, so be it. I couldn't care less if anyone here feels this makes me a fucking idiot - it is, after all, my body.
Cheers.
