I just got an email from Hell's pizza showing a picture of torn-out newspaper saying "Vatican announces 7 new deadly sins" and the caption "Looks like we'll be expanding our menu".

I can't imagine they'll have the ring of the first seven sins though. Gluttony is a good name for a pizza. Paedophilia and abortion, not so much.

Jessica Hagy of Indexed has posted a visualization of the new sins and how they work together:

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things... their number is negligible and they are stupid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

So the Catholic Church is trying to beat the competition for the title of "Biggest Hypocrit." They may win, considering the US government only has 232 years time with which to commit atrocities and then act horrified when other organizations repeat them, while the Church has 2008.
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

This seems like a really unecessary cosmetic move to me. I don't even believe in this stuff and I can make it work the old way:

How about Greed?
The Article wrote:the obscenely wealthy,
Definite Greed, maybe with a side order of Sloth.
The Article wrote:and scientists who manipulate human genes.
Why not Pride, for supposedly "playing God?"
The Article wrote:abortion and paedophilia
Assuming the Religious Right's views on the motivations for the above are accurate, why not Lust?

That was awesome, thank you.

So, then, if I were to steal something (a ballpoint pen, say) when I was six, I wouldn't be allowed to realize it's bad later, and then continue to say as much when I was 40? :?

The problem with the old list of mortal sins is that they were not sins. They were character traits, which everyone has to some degree. At least the new list is actually a list of sins, which many people can say that they do not commit at all.

Really, if you're going to create a list of "mortal sins", shouldn't they be defined in such a manner that you don't end up declaring 100% of the human race to be guilty? What the fuck kind of mortal sin is "Pride"? That's the problem with Catholicism; in the past, that was their basic goal: declare 100% of the population to be guilty, and then make them come into church, confess their sins, and give you money.

Now that people can simply leave the church at will, they figure they have to keep up with the times or they'll lose the industrialized world. And I suspect they don't really want to become the Church of the Third World; the Catholic Church has always presented itself as the Church of the Downtrodden, but it has always been the Church of Obscene Wealth, and to keep that shit up, you want money from wealthy countries pouring in.

Conceded. I can see some genuine persuasive value in it when you put it that way.

That's a large part of what was going through my head when I officially stopped being a Catholic, yep.
