Yesterday the fundies struck again...

Post by Boba Fett »

Yesterday evening I was home and watched the TV.

One of the channels played Ben Hur, starring Charlton Heston.

I was really happy because last time I saw this movie, I was about 10.

I enjoyed the sea battle, the coach race but at the end when Ben Hur searching for his mother and sister the movie turned into a disguised fundie movie.

When in the movie the Romans crucifise Jesus, Ben Hur's mother and sister are suddenly healed from their half rotten, lepered state and a strange "light" shines on Ben Hur's face from the crucified body of Jesus.

On the other hand it was a good movie till that part...

How does having Christian elements in a movie make it fundamentalist?

Ah, no worries. It's good to see foreign language speakers using English, I must say I envy being able to speak practically fluently in more than one language, my German and French is somewhat lacking now.

Well, to be technical, the elements are fundamentally Christian. :P

But seriously, it seems that "fundie" has become common to simply describe "stupid Christian shit", and not necessarily "fundamentalism" as it is used politically.
Few sane people would say that Jesus-light making lepers healthy isn't stupid Christian shit.

This is not to say that any movie that has Christian themes is "fundie" or even "shit." In fact, even a lot of great movies are chock full of Christian shit of the stupidest kind. As Boba notes, Ben-Hur is a good movie. So is The Last Temptation of Christ. So is Dogma. And then there are countless movies that draw on Christian themes without specifically endorsing or crediting the Bible or its events (Jesus' hero's journey is an especially strong theme).
This is because the Bible, for the most part, is good mythology. It only becomes objectionable when it's taken seriously.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

For me it was quite fundie...

Tried to convince me that for all the suffering the Hur family went through, God has gave them health by miracle as a countervalue...

Yes and there're several other good movies from that age.

I don't have any problem with the presence of Christian elements in the movies.
My problem is the "miracle".

I'm glad someone pointed that out. I was starting to doubt myself and go through that one over and over in my head. :D Now what was that rule....? :D

Actually, is is correct in that use as opposed to are.

Remember, English Gramar states that both items have to be able to make sense without the other one. English IS lacking. German IS lacking makes sense. English ARE lacking and German ARE lacking do not.

Unless of course, you're using the word skills as an understood in that sentence. And then the are is appropriate.
"And as I promised, I said I would read from the bible..." "...And if we could turn our bible to Pslams..."Happy shall he be that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones." (Pslams 137:9) So let me ask you a question? Who is the worst influence, God or Marilyn Manson?" "God!" "And if that's not the best fucking example, God HIMSELF killed his own MOTHER FUCKING SON!"-Marilyn Manson

Yeah, English can b a bit retarded at times, but it is otherwise simpler and better at communicating then any other language.

There are one or two things that are unacceptable in society in English yet are not against the rules and used in foreign languages e.g. double positives.
