Is it possible for a omnipotent being to exist?

Post by ray245 »

In science fiction, we always see some sort of omnipotent being around, like Q and the ancients for example.

But, is is possible for a omnipotent being to exist in real life?

Well, the being do not need to play a role in our day to day like and etc, because technically he is omnipotent, and I doubt our day to day life will interest it at all.

It's certainly possible that beings could exist advanced and powerful enough that casual investigation into their abilities (if they so permitted) would have more gullible people thinking of them as 'omnipotent'.

But it's all a matter of perspective. From a caveman's point of view, a sufficiently equipped modern human being would seem 'all powerful' to him.

One thing is for certain though, any such beings wouldn't have 'always' existed and have been subject to evolving into their complex existence from simplier forms, like all life.

If such an omnipotent being were to exist, and we were able to perceive its existence, we would no doubt find its existence paradoxical.

For example, take the old question, "Can God create a rock that He can't pick up?" If not, then He's not omnipotent. So say He creates said rock, a truly omnipotent being would be able to pick it up anyway, despite being incapable of picking it up. This is a contradiction and so we throw it out as an impossibility. If your truly omnipotent being [tm] existed, then he would generate a paradox by being able to do it.

I'd say there's a greater possibility for an omnipotent being to exist than for Ray to ask something that isn't completely retarded.

How the bloody hell can I know if the question I asked is stupid or not?

And some other topic I've created does not seems to be a stupid one..

I hear there's these things called search engines that can use to tell whether or not people have answered such mind-numbingly simple minded questions before. Seriously, most of the shit you ask you'd expect out of a 10 year old who just discovered that there is a world besides what mommy and daddy provide and thinks his questions have never been answered before.
And some other topic I've created does not seems to be a stupid one..
The fact that people somehow manage to salvage discussion out of it doesn't make the nature of the thread any less dumb or blindingly obvious.

If an omnipotent being really did exist, John De Lancie would be dead by now. Or all powerful. Take your pick.

Well, for starters, perhaps you can actually try to give the question significant thought and research of your own prior to asking everyone else for their opinion. Typically you write 3-5 sentences in the OP, and the formula goes something like this:

"Well, I was doing [insert activity] yesterday and I came across/heard this person talking about [insert topic that somehow links to christianity]. I was just wondering, what's everyone's opinion on it? [insert mild clarification, ending in question mark] [optionally - insert another cute sentence like "don't flame me if this sounds stupid.]

ray245 wrote:And some other topic I've created does not seems to be a stupid one..
ErrHerrm. What follows is a list of every topic you've made in SLAM since January and a sentence (out of the five...yes, they all have 5 or less sentences) in your OP that summarized it. I defy you to say that there hasn't been a thorough discussion of the vast majority of them online - except perhaps Mohism, laws against religious indoctrination of kids (perhaps because it's by your own admission completely impractical with no real application in the answer), and the "what's the fairest afterlife?" question.

"Is it possible for an omnipotent being to exist?"
See OP

"Majority of people disliking gays? Natural or Influenced?"
I was wondering if there is any biological reason that the majority of the people don't really like gays?

"Free will? DO we even have any free will?"
So bascially we are just creatures that don't really have any free will by this argument right?

"Most fair afterlife"
So in your opinon, which afterlife is the most fair one?

"Is a fetus considered alive?"
So I want to ask the members here, when is a fetus considered alive scienitifically and morally(meaning your own personal stand) ?

"Mohism" [[Note: nobody posted in this topic except for ray245....three times]]
I've just read on a few articles regarding Mohism, starting from wikipedia.

"Regarding nudity"
Is it because some people view tribal people as sub-human or non-human? Because they are considered to be a common animal like apes and etc as compared to a 'civilized' human being?

"Culture gap as a debating tactic against christians?"
I was wondering about this. Is it possible for us to use culture gap as a debating tactics against christians?

"What makes christianity so popular?"
What makes it so popular as compared to the greek gods, Norse god, Indian or chinese gods, or even buddhism?

"Evolution question"
To put it simply, what I want to ask is this.
Are we the one influencing our evolutionary path will be like, or is it nature itself that 'decides' or affect what will we evolved into?

"Should there be laws to protect kids from religious influence"
Well, as the title put it, should there be laws to protect kids from any kind of religous influence until they are of legal age?

"Religion Founders, are they really religious?"
From a non-religious point of view, that means using religion purely as a form of public support, doesn't that mean the religion founder (AKA a poltician) can be an atheist?

"The bible as a piece of literature"
Well...basically I am asking everyone here...what does the bible mean to you?
A decent piece of writing? A classic novel? Epic novel like lord of the rings? Piece of crap?

Clearly the question was too short or dull to be credited with the discussion that followed. Try to put more effort into your OPs, the topics will probably improve themselves as a result, because once you put in the effort to getting a good opening post and the research needed you'll find yoruself throwing out old and dull topics.

Thing is, "omnipotent" is just about the worst defined word in the English language, and no debate concerning entities who could be described by it can be had without a painfully precise definition of what the fuck you actually mean when you say omnipotent.

Other then your inability to process a question that has an answer beyond "Would you fucking shut up and learn first?".
