Honor guardsmen fired for blessing

Post by HemlockGrey »

Right! According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, an honor guardsmen at a New Jersey veterns' cemetary was fired because after the service he would say 'God bless this family and God bless the United States of America'.

However, he would only say it when the family had a clergyman or requested a chapel service. He is currently considering filing suit to get his job back.

So, what do you think?

Sounds ridiculous. What was he fired for? Just common courtesy to religious folks, based on this information.

This is an example of taking the seperation of church and state too far for me. When you try to establish a state religion, it's unconstitutional. When you say something like that, there's nothing wrong with it, "God bless" is a commonly used phrase in this country.

if he only said it to religous people then he was just respecting their beliefs and did not deserve to be fired

He's been given his job back now.

That's patently absurd. He was utilizing discretion, so I don't see how this would qualify as any kind of offense.
