If you actually read the article, you would discover that his head was not severed, nor was it sewn back on.Probably a dumb question.
How did he talk if his head was attached only by spinal cord?
The accident broke the join between the spinal column and the skull. Everything else was still intact--the spinal cord, the veins & arteries, the skin, trachea & esophagus. This sort of injury usually kills you outright, since the breaking of the neck tends to sever the spinal cord.
The surgery just repaired the break.
