At what temperature is the surrounding air?

It's because the blood near your skin is flowing faster and the air is cooling it, causing your hands to get cold.

It's because you have poor blood circulation. You probably need to do some cardiovascular exercise or lose weight.

It's not uncommon to have a cardiovascular condition, it can be simply something to do with your face or hands or feet or severe like real blood flow problems and major loss of heat.

But generally it is down to usage of the muscles more that requires more ciculation that means more blood which extracts more heat since the suface area to mass ratio of the hand is higher than other parts of the body, thus more thermal energy is lost. Same reason African elephants have big ears.

My hands only get cold while typing if it's winter, the window is open, and air is blowing in and onto my fingers.

I get the same thing, but I think in my case it's because I usually rest my elbows on the desk when I type. That restricts bloodflow to my hands somewhat. I guess it could be weight, though...I'm 1.78 meters and 80.75 kilograms (5'10" and 178 lbs for fellow non-metrics). That's about 1 kilo over what I should be at according to BMI, but a decent amount of my weight's muscle (I'm taking my third martial art and I do construction work as a hobby on the weekend).

Unless you have varicose veins I wouldn't worry, the most you'll get doing that is pins and needles after a while, I wish I had more muscles. Any infact!

Where is your wrist when you are typing?
If it is touching the desk, and especially if the desk is metal, you are conducting heat away from your body through the major arteries that are in your hands. A little piece of velvet may help, though it may be a condition of poor circulation that would require that your hands are ALWAYS cold, and thus making this thread basically void.
If anyone doubts that they have major arteries in their wrists, slit them to find out.

LMFAO!!!!!!

Unless it's winter, my hands get pretty warm... sometimes during heavy Quake Fragfests or SD.Net Posting Frenzies™ they get hot enough to vaporize a hole through a meter-thick plate of Quadanium Steel (the stuff the Death Star's made of) at a touch. Seriously, they don't get quite that hot, but they'll definitely give whoever's naked back I touch quite a start! Phun!

I'ts probably because they keep their hands elevated above their elbows while using a keyboard; bloodflow in the limbs don't seem to work the best when they're working against gravity in an atypical fashion (the opposite's true if you stand on your head, too much blood flows into it).

There's not alot people can do about it, unless they sit in an odd manor.

And Mr. Bean, I hope you aren't referring to Forgotten Realms Gnomes. I personally have a Gnomish Paladin, Blublo Phillippei, and he would never do any such things of the sort, nor would most Gnomes from Faerun.

Svirfneblin Gnomes, on the other hand, I cannot totally vouch for...

Happens to me all the time. It's almost exclusively a result of poor blood circulation, but here's a thing: Take a handtowel and drape it over your hands and the keyboard. If you're a good typer, you shouldn't need to see the keyboard, and your hands will keep warm.

If that seems bad, buy one of those desktop portable heater-fans at your local hardware store or Zellers or Wal-mart. They average less than 50$ Canadian each and can be a lifesaver if you spend a lot of time in front of a computer.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.
