Instant learning
Yes, I think it was brought up before, but suppose they did have Matrix style learning, where they just load it into your brain like they did with Neo and all those martial arts, would people still go to college (and would they charge college fees for you to download something into your brain?) The only thing something like this wouldn't give you is to learn something that nobody knows yet what they do research for. I think it would take a lot of pressure off of Mike, when everyone becomes a university educated PhD and no longer uses pseudoscience.
Do you think Christian fundies would still use it after they'd be educated, that now it wouldn't work since everyone knows everything about science and would know they are lying.
While I think it would be great to instantly learn something, I think it would really drastically take away from the experience, which is not all just learning.

Fundies would still use pseudoscience. Remember, they still technically have the knowledge of say evolution, especially after we tell them what it actually is. They still don't think it is right and use pseudoscience.
With the instant learning thing the only difference is that they are "taught" it differently. Not that they think it is right.
As for the second thing, there are some things I would rather learn really really quick, like my studies. And some stuff that I would rather learn the old fashioned way, like how to have sex really really well. And that is all in the experience.

Make sure it never leaves the US thats for sure
What? Am I the only person who sees the Advantage in a Miltary composed of Fokes who know how to do every other Job in the Military and know as much Kung-Fu as a 5th Dan?

Pah, the mighty Tasmanian Militia Forces already control this technology. Soon we shall demonstrate it in our invasion of the evil New Zealand empire.Mr Bean wrote:Make sure it never leaves the US thats for sure :D

If we could, say, do something rediculously advanced like alter the chemical prints in our brains or whatever it would take to add memories to our heads, it would be a nice tech to have, but there would be thousands of inherent difficulties, like whether we could comprehend the subject matter or not and whether it can be USED. People take time to learn math, for example, by repeatedly using the skill. People learn martial arts by performing basic exercises and conditioning themselves to it. You cannot just jam knowledge in, because your body would not be able to make proper use of it. People need to see examples and learn how to USE the facts and fundamentals they've been taught before they can comprehend more detailed or complicated applications of their knowledge.
Fencing is an excellent example. I know men who are young, powerful, and well coordinated. They move fluidly and instinctually, and have been givenh knowledge of every aspect of efficient style and form. They know the theory, and can put it into practice. The only thing they lack is experience. Which is why they consistently lose matches to 70-year-old masters with chronic arthritis and the land speed of a glacier.
I can stick facts into your head all I want, but whether they're instantly jammed in or you learn them via repetition and exercise, you're not going to be any more or less intelligent or capable than before until you've spent a decent amount of time practicing like everyone else.

Instant learning could give the comprehension of the subject as well by simply cutting and pasting from the brain of someone who did understand. But by doing this, you'd end up thinking more or less identically regarding the subject as the donor.
Progress happens because there are a few people who think a little differently from others and come up with new ideas.

The book Helm deals with this subject. There is an imprinter that downloads a bunch of information into a user. Also damn near makes them insane if they aren't ready.
And interesting thing is that it contains the knowledge for how to do martial arts. Of course, it is useless until the body is ready to actually perform it. It covers that aspect rather well.

Doctor Sherry Turkle (MIT) has done studies on this. Everyone shes spoken to said they'd like to just KNOW the hard stuff like calculus, but not shakespear. For them its not knowing shakespear thats important, its the doing. They dont want to know, they want to do. Whereas flying a jet is something you want to KNOW not learn how to do.

That's really pitiful if you need an uber-learning tech to have soliders able to invade New Zealand.weemadando wrote:Pah, the mighty Tasmanian Militia Forces already control this technology.
