Adbusters

Post by Kronos »

< Mostly a basis for debate and opinion gathering ^

Considering that a bunch of rural Missourian teenagers aren't the best people to discuss this with, and that my normal online chats are filled with inanity on a regular basis, I've decided to post this here.

Okay, so I just bought a copy of the magazine Adbusters. I looked through it, and to my dismay, there was nothing more than rage interspersed with overly dramatic articles around the state of the world. With the exception of a small piece on biofuels, I found no useful ideas, only rage at the current state of things.

So, what do you think about this counterculture publication? And is it going off the deep end, and becoming a 'down with the system; but screw the aftermath' type call to action?

EDIT: Oh, and if you've never heard of it, here's their website, and an impartial [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adbusters]Wikipedia article[/url[.

Split Ender's useless post to Testing. This is a thread asking for comments, so if you don't have any, don't comment. If you feel absolutely compelled to post, do a little bit of research. If nobody has ever heard of this, then it will just drop off the page and Kronos will have an answer to the question of how many people have opinions about the magazine.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Never heard of the magazine, so I went to the website and poked around for a while, read some articles, and then I found a quote that I think sums up what I had been reading:
We are a global network of culture jammers and creatives working to change the way information flows, the way corporations wield power, and the way meaning is produced in our society.
"Off the deep end" as you asked? Not sure, but they're not swimming in the shallow end any more, that's for sure. More specifically, I thought it was a lot of posing, and I wouldn't spend money for the rag.

Seems to me to be a sort of anti-libertarian sort of thing, with a number of people trying to do small things to defeat their enemy and doing it about as effectively as libertarians are trying to do the opposite.

And, yes, my choice of describing them as anti-libertarian is deliberate, because there doesn't seem to be the sort of political coherence and ideology associated with Socialism/Communism.

Adbusters is a publication that wonderfully combines an utter lack of logical thought or worthwhile conclusions with populist far-left (and I mean far left) anti-capitalist, anti-American, anti-Israel parade of bullshit, and I say that as liberal myself. They're to regular left-wing politics what the Nazi party is to right-wing politics, but somehow they're popular with young people and new age types, likely because of their easily parroted "Screw the corperations, screw the government" sentiment combined with their generic rage that teenagers related to so well.

They pretty much lost any credibility they had from me when they ran an article which I believe compared the uniform of a (photoshopped) modern American soldier with that of a German SS trooper.

Think about it.

Cruising low in my N-1 blasting phat beats,

Got my 'saber on my belt and my gat by side,
