Why would anyone be surprised by Creationism gaining momentum? Pseudoscientific nonsense is absolutely pervasive--crystals, transcendital meditation, UFOs, homeopathy, psychics of all stripes, and the rest of it. Creationism is just one more brain turd floating in the bowl, with the advantage that most people in this country are Christian already, so they're more comfortable buying into that than they are some New Age horseshit.
Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.--Ada Louise Huxtable, "Farewell to Penn Station", New York Times editorial, 30 October 1963

That's probably one of the reasons. Nonsense like belief in alien abductions, psychics, and scientifically impossbile doomsday scenarios are growing, so I'm not suprised why Creationism is gaining support. The only difference is that you don't see people sucessfully adding astrology or other new-age horseshit to school cirriculum.RedImperator wrote:Why would anyone be surprised by Creationism gaining momentum? And if Creationism is being taught in someone's classroom, they could at least heckle the teacher.

A part of the original constitutional structure I wouldn't mind seeing restored. There is a reason why US Senators were originally elected by State governments and NOT by popular vote.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Re: Why not more fundies?
Hmm... here in Denmark, the media made a lot of fuss out of a few fundamentalist colleges opening. But why do Americans tend to be more religious than Europeans?? (note: I mean West Europeans, not eastern europeans - who tend to be very religious)jaeger115 wrote:The media and newspapers doesn't seem to be noticing the growing fundie movement in America. Yet they report on every new trend, like powereating and blue hair. And the media is supposed to be liberal! What went wrong here?

For some reason, I don't seem to bump into many fundies in RL. I think it's because I hang with the "wrong"* crowd, or it's that I live in CA...
