It's a nice FAQ. Even though I disagree with some of Starglider's views on friendly AI, I do appreciate his insights. I have had that FAQ on my favorites for a while, its a nice source.

On a side note, I haven't seen him post in a while.

I've never read this before, but I personally find it rather... uncomfortably biased?
Libertarian, hates the government, and believes that anyone who disagrees is an idiot? ✓
Thinks genetic algorithms, neural networks, and similar methods are dumb ways toward an AGI, and thinks anyone who disagrees is an idiot? ✓
Is aware of the dangers of egotism and isolationism, talks extensively about it, but is in denial that he could reasonably be affected by it for reasons specific to him? ✓
Randomly interspersed mathematical jargon into otherwise ordinary English sentences for no reason? ✓
Is utterly convinced that any intelligent entity is guaranteed to destroy the world, and that it's a moral duty to contribute to FAI? ✓
Cites Eliezer Yudkowsky as a source? ✓
It's almost like it was written by Yudkowsky himself.
I'm sure there are some useful links, and some less useful commentary, but I can't help feeling that a committee could have written a better, more useful, and more honest FAQ.

It's troublesome. He's an AI developer and obviously knows more about it than most of us here, but his politics are libertarian-goldbug levels of craziness, and how much can you actually trust the proponents and developers of AI when they hype this stuff? They've hyped it before multiple times only for it to fail to pan out on them.

Still, he does sporadically produce thought-provoking commentary in News & Politics, even if it's thought-provoking in the sense of "What the hell was that?".

In my experience people who dive deep enough into X subject tend to be so occupied by that subject that they completely vanish from internet due to lack of time. Therefore I was very grateful he took the time to write that down on one place instead of piecemealing it out in a million different bits on a thousand different IRC chats. He also seems a lot more cautious about the whole thing than most enthusiastic singularitards like Kurzweil, that makes it more trustworthy.

Maybe we need more socialist-AI-seed programmers?

Nah, he just lived in Croydon. It's an effective way to loose any sympthay for the great unwashed. Unlike living in Vietnam, which had the opposite effect.
