I have, and I used to be able to take a NMR read-out, draw the molecule, and name it... but that was in college before I went to university, and I've since forgotten it :( I just remember that methyl-ethyl-ether was my favorite molecule... but I don't think that helps.

Hehe thanks anyway. Basically the common name for a methyl group in the middle of a chain is isopropyl, but I don't know if that would make a 3 carbon chain with a carbon group in the middle isopropylpropane or isopropylbutane since there are 4 carbons.

If you had asked me three years ago this month, I might have been able to help.

Ah, the good old priciple of modern education; teach them to only remember the material untill the test is over. And they wonder why Ivy-league students can't pass highschool-level tests.

Unfortunately I have to remember this stuff if I want to get hired by Dow or any other companies.

Good Luck. All the chemical companies I know of are DownSizing.

Most likely I'll be going into the pharmacuitical field. Companies like Walgreens and such are killing for pharmacists right now. When ever you see a commercial advertising that a grocery store has a " actual pharamicist" in the pharmacy they are neglecting to tell you that it is federal law that they have one in their pharmacy. That's why so many are offering to pay for college tuition if you sign on with them for several years.

Will need to dig out my old O-chem book tonight when I get home from work. I can post the answer tomorrow.

No, it would be classified as isobutane

No, it would be classified as isobutane

Really? Is that a common name or is it systematic like other names? Does that mean a pentane group with a 4 carbon chain and methyl group on the 2 or 3 carbon would be isopentane?

It's a systematic name. There are 4 carbons in the molecule so it's a butane molecule. Since they aren't arranged in a straight chain you call it an isobutane.

Correct
