Help a newbie get calcs

Post by Alan Bolte »

Alright, wasn't sure if this should go in here or the Games forum, but I've never seen anyone talk about calcs in Games, so here goes.

I'm trying to make an Arwing for Starshatter. For those who don't know, an Arwing is a fighter from the SNES game Star Fox. I want to analyze the gameplay and figure out what I should put into Starshatter to get the best results. I will initially need:
Length of craft (I'm getting somewhere between 15 and 25 m)
Length and width of 'laser' bolt
Mass of craft
Engine exhaust velocity (works kinda like velocity limit)
Turning rates
Thrust in kilonewtons of main drive and thrusters
Coefficient of Lift
Coefficient of Drag (Wings)
Stall onset angle of attack (radians)

Now, I'm doing kinda reasonably, I've got the ship ingame, I'm good on that, you don't need to know anything. I'm just a complete n00b when it comes to analyzing video footage -particularly of games with mere dozens of polys - so it really isn't something I can do well yet. This is, indeed, what it looks like when I start to give up. I'd say my biggest issues are scaling and figuring out how to interpret the flight model using semi-realistic physics. My knowledge of physics is extremely limited. Any ideas at all would be highly appreciated.
Any job worth doing with a laser is worth doing with many, many lasers. -Khrima
There's just no arguing with some people once they've made their minds up about something, and I accept that. That's why I kill them. -Othar
