Playing with Catholics

Post by StarshipTitanic »

Due to my Byzantine obsession, I feel compelled to prove the legitimacy of the Orthodox churches over that contemptuous creature of Rome (not that I truely care :D). Right now I'm focusing on the Church councils before the Great Schism (the real one, you silly Protestants :P ;)). So far I've assembled a very basic list of reasons why I'm correct (The Patriarch of Rome will be known as the Pope for reasons of easy typing):

The Pope is an official, or at least an agent of some sort, of the Eastern Roman Emperor of Constantinople. This is backed up by the fact that the Eastern Emperor would promulgate a Church council, pushing the canons it created into law, not with the approval of the Pope himself.

The Pope violates the principal of the Roman and Constantinopolitan Patriarchs being equal in power in the Christian world. This canon (Canon 28, Council of Chalcedon) was promulgated along with the other canons by Emperor Marcian four times during Feburary 452 while Pope Leo I gave his rejection over this canon a year later on March 21, 453. However, he no longer possessed the authority he enjoyed over all other Patriarchs at this time because the canons came into law before.

Am I on to something?

The problem is that there is a pope, and there isn't an Emperor.

The Palaeologi female line did not die out; they still live, scattered, in Southern Italy.

The Patriarch of Constantinople has the power to crown a new Christian Emperor at any time he wants, although that would probably lead to horrible riots in Istanbul and his death.

Anyway, the Pope clearly went renegade from the Empire long before the Empire itself died. He is a traitor (Donation of Constantine hoax anyone?).

To quote Marius in "The Cartoon History of the Universe Part 2": Not if you have your own ARMY.
The Pope always had plans for Frenchmen and Germans to back up his scemes(sp). The Byzantines themselves had conveted the Russians to back up their own scemes(sp).
And after Constantinople was looted by the armies raised for the Pope, not to mention being under threat from the Turks, the Catholics never had to suck up to the Byzantines again.
I THINK this is accurate :?

Well we already knew he was a stinkin' traitor, but I wanted the legal reasons why. :D

The Catholics of the Balkans paid for what the Fourth Crusade did, but why should an Italian care about them? ;)
