Interesting story from today's edition of The Times.
Seems that the law enforcement bodies knew a great deal more about Studabaker than they let on, and got the media to cooperate in a deliberate psychological campaign to bring the pair back.

The airline let a 12 year old girl get on an international flight without at least a parent or guardian to check her in?!? WTF?

I still didn't get that part. My brother is 17 (and looks older than that) and he was prevented to pass through checkpoint until I arrived as a legal guardian, in our last vacation. I can't understand how they did it. Someone fucked up badly at the passgates. Even stranger considering that the man was american, not E.U, thus he had to pass through the "foreigners" gate, subject to control, while the girl was national. They had to get separated, at one point :? :?

Well, considering the sheer stupidity of her parents, she probably had a legal authorisation passed by them to leave the country, which she asked them in order to get the London's undergound passcard.

Now she can sue the airline for millions of Euros and run off to Dutch Sint Maartin and legally hook up with her Marine. Seriously though, her mother really did not have any concern whatsoever after she found out she was with that guy and safe. She even went so far as to say something to the effect of let them be together. There is a whole lot of shit yet to be revealed here.

He risked imprisonment to give the girl at least a few moments of companionship, let's give him what he wants.

Looks like I was wrong. He may indeed have had some ill motives.

BTW how do people like these ever got the chance serve in an elite and respected organization like the US marines ? Should not the US military be careful about people with perversions ?
Errm, the USMC is hardly an elite and respected organization. Just about all you need to do to join is pass the physical and survive Basic. Psych batteries aren't really a part of the screening process to join the US armed forces, though they should be.
:wtf: Why dont you sign up for the Marines today, go to Parris Island and get your ass kicked for 12 weeks straight, and tell me how easy it is. Surving basic isnt a cakewalk. Marines actually get KIT. Dont you think there is a reason that the Marine Corps are as good as they are? And no psych screeining? If you've ever attempted suicide, you are disqualified for enlistment. If you have a bad criminal record, you are disqualified. If you've ever taken any kind of psych drugs, it takes a hell of a lot to not get disqualified. No branch of the military needs people that will crack under pressure easily. If you ever go to MEPS, and see how many people are directed to the exit, you'd know that the US Military isnt easy to join.
So go sit on your couch and watch Full Metal Jacket, a piss poor representation of MCT, and continue to badmouth the ability of grunts.

She looks a touch young, but I could definately see where there could be confusion. She's now back home, safe and sound, so it seems.
She's tiny as fuck. No way would I mistake a girl like that for anything but a young bitch. Btw, if he really thought her to not be underage, didn't he seems suspicious over her not having any kind of idenfication? Where was the ID, or the Drivers License. Maybe he didn't give a fuck about her age?

It's Hilarious reading over these obvious 'hotbods' in this thread comment on her appearance. I bet none of you are past her level in appearance either. :)

There's a small cache of people on SD.net who've gotten laid, have significant others, etc.

No, she's hunched over slightly and behind her mother. Besides, I've seen 20+ girls who are shorter than 5'4". There is room for confusion, but it should have been worked out pretty quickly.

There is room for confusion. Doesn't mean that I wasn't able to pick her out as slightly young, but you have to remember that appearances can be decieving. My own sister is three years older than me and still regularly gets carded at bars. Whenever we're out together, most everyone who hasn't seen the two of use together assumes I'm the elder sibling.
Btw, if he really thought her to not be underage, didn't he seems suspicious over her not having any kind of idenfication? Where was the ID, or the Drivers License. Maybe he didn't give a fuck about her age?
Now that this has been resolved, new information has been released that was not present before in order to persuade the girl to come home and the Ex-Marine to turn himself in. Apparently, the man KNEW she was 12 the whole time, has child pornography on his computer, and still went through with it all. Everything else up to this point was careful misinformation to try and diffuse the situation peacefully.

I was 16 when I flew alone (no guardian) from US to Canada, and back. Is European law stricter in this sense?

The laws are considerably more lax when travelling from the US to Canada or vice versa.

From my personal experience i find US customs to be lax and the Canadian side to be fairly thorough. Although when i went to Ireland the customs officers on both sides were far more strict.

I know that guy. Tobey Studebaker. I used to take Karate with him.

I didn't know him well, like a brother or anything, but he seemed like a nice guy. He lost a lot of weight and was very depressed when his whife died of cancer. I think he was making judgement call mistakes bacause of his whife's death.

Also, why was that girl pretending to be 19 anyway? And how did she fly out to meet him all by herself? He may be somewhat at fault, but I would say the girl is not blemeless either.
