Which fallacy does this fall under?
If, for example, a fundie compares us atheists to Hitler (I know, such a stretch) and assumes all atheists to be like him, which fallacy does this fall under?
Anyone help me out here?

Incomprehensible stupidity woud be my suggestion.
Hitler was a christian, catholic to be more precise, meaning that drawing any conclusion about the behaviour of Atheist from Hitler behaviour is based on a false premise.
Even if Hitler had been an Atheist assuming that all Atheists would behave like him is a Hasty Generalization fallacy (drawing a conclusion about the nature of a group of people based on the action of a single member of that group) and Questionable Cause fallacy (assuming that Hitlers behaviour was somehow linked to his Atheism). Of course since Hitler was not an Atheist this all totaly irrelevant.

Right, I tried to explain that to Kent Hovind when he debated at Chico State. He flatly denied it and said that Hitler was an atheist. I told him that he was originally going to become a monk, and even offered to get some references. Hovind wanted nothing to do with it. In his primitive sick mind, Hitler was an atheist and always will be.

I had an excellent speech by H Himmler on this topic somewhere, but I can't find the book. The jist of it is "Atheists are stupid and don't belong in the SS."

And here Hovind neatly demonstrated ye olde Wall of Ignorance. First used to devastating effect at ASVS by one Robert Scott Anderson, aliases RSA, G2K, Guardian2000, Darkstar, Scooter, Fucktard, Fuckstar, Dorkstar, and others. I estimate Hovind's WoI as 2.66 DarkStars in strength as well; an extremely powerful one by anyone's measurement...Superman wrote:Right, I tried to explain that to Kent Hovind when he debated at Chico State. I thought TOWNMNBS was one of first (or at least earlier) users of the Wall of Ignorance, and shouldn't it be measured in KiloJaques?Einhander Sn0m4n wrote:And here Hovind neatly demonstrated ye olde Wall of Ignorance. Technically, a bald-faced lie is actually not a fallacy. So the first part (claiming that Hitler was an atheist) is not a fallacy; it's just an outright lie. The second part (using that as the basis for a hasty generalization) is a fallacy.Superman wrote:If, for example, a fundie compares us atheists to Hitler (I know, such a stretch) and assumes all atheists to be like him, which fallacy does this fall under?

Ok ok, I wasn't paying attention to that.. Besides, I thought the DarkStar was the SI unit for Wall of Ignorance energy measurement...Darth Utsanomiko wrote:I thought TOWNMNBS was one of first (or at least earlier) users of the Wall of Ignorance, and shouldn't it be measured in KiloJaques?Einhander Sn0m4n wrote:And here Hovind neatly demonstrated ye olde Wall of Ignorance. see, for christians, if a person believe christ was their saviour, and say so in public, their christians. personal lord and saviour mind you, not just existing.Darth Wong wrote:Technically, a bald-faced lie is actually not a fallacy. hitler has a speech doing that.
so they do a shuffle - he's just saying that. political deal, maybe.
at which one points on the ss units looking for heresy and the gott mitt us belts.
so they say that was just a cover - christians were going to the camps.
at which one points out that most *everyone* was going to the camps, particularly if they opposed hitler. religion wasnt a basis.
so they say he wasnt a real christian in his heart - look at his actions.
so I say hes not antisemetic - speeches and actions on a national scale dont mean a thing.
just guess if I had this convo tonite.
just guess.

This day is Fantastic!

Hasty Generalization Fallacy--even if Hitler had been an atheist, that wouldn't mean that all atheists were necessarily like Hitler.Superman wrote:If, for example, a fundie compares us atheists to Hitler (I know, such a stretch) and assumes all atheists to be like him, which fallacy does this fall under?
Moreover, it's also a lie. Hitler was a Catholic Christian, not an atheist.
I would respond by saying something to the effect of "Hitler was a Christian [cite source or two], all Christians must be like Hitler," and see what he does.

Re: Which fallacy does this fall under?
I see one problem with your counterargument. Maybe enough christians ARE like Hitler to make the comparison valid. Remember, this is a religion directly responsible for the deaths and torture of untold millions of innocent people! Hitler was just doing his part for the christian cause. I still see people to this day entertaining notions of "rounding up all the niggers, kikes, fags, Injuns, witches, and chinks" and torturing them all to death for being unchristian! After all, christianity and racism can be indistinguishable from one another at times.Master of Ossus wrote:Hasty Generalization Fallacy--even if Hitler had been an atheist, that wouldn't mean that all atheists were necessarily like Hitler.Superman wrote:If, for example, a fundie compares us atheists to Hitler (I know, such a stretch) and assumes all atheists to be like him, which fallacy does this fall under?

Although I don't doubt that there are Christians who share similar mindsets to Hitler (and atheists, for that matter), it doesn't especially matter. It's still a hasty generalization fallacy. The point is only to show the other person what's wrong with that reasoning.Einhander Sn0m4n wrote:I see one problem with your counterargument. Good point. I still don't harbor good will toward anything that moves otherwise normal rational humans to torture and kill their fellow humans en masse!Master of Ossus wrote:Although I don't doubt that there are Christians who share similar mindsets to Hitler (and atheists, for that matter), it doesn't especially matter.
