SLAM is like Mos Eisley...

Post by Striderteen »

...you will never find a more wretched hive of stupidity and insanity.

I don't think I've ever been embarrassed that someone agreed with me before, but the sheer mind-numbing stupidity of some of the fundamentalist moron types who have posted here make me want to find a dark corner to hide in. I've always known a lot of Christians wear mental blinders when it comes to issues of science, but I don't think I've ever encountered such dogmatic adherence to ludicrous philosophies before.

Overally, I think I'm ceasing to wonder why so many people consider all Christians to be, by definition, raving lunatics. We aren't, but I can't really blame people for thinking so after encountering ones that act like some of the people on these boards.

The thing is, you have to separate the fundamentalists (who think, for example, that the Earth is flat because the Bible says so), from the ones who are more moderate.

Exactly. Fundamentalists don't define christianity anymore than liberals do.

this is true, however the fundamentalists do tend to be the ones who actually follow the teachings in the bible most closely, which is the scary thing.

More accurately because they think the Bible says so. The number of theological controversies stemming from differences in semantic interpretations of just one or two Bible verses is downright scary, and the degree of dogmatism some people subsequently apply to those interpretations is even more mind-boggling.

Way too many Christians cling to interpretation "A" even when interpretation "B" makes more sense just because interpretation "A" is what they were taught as children. And if you point out that interpretation "B" is scientifically plausible wheras interpretation "A" is scientifically ludicrous, half of them will call you a heretic.

I think a better analogy would be, the internet is like Mos Eisley, SLAM is like the cantina. Bounty hunters gotta drink.

I follow the Bible pretty closely, but don't consider myself a "Fundie." A Christian is one who follows Christ, and as such i only bother with the NT; OT is a nice refence of what the Jews used to do. The "Fundies" that get described in this board probably aren't even Christians, because the only thing i have ever read about Jesus is that he loved and forgave everyone.
