Another thing that's been bothering me

Post by RayCav of ASVS »

I'm scared to death (hehe, pun :D ) about mortality. Not just mortality, but the mortality of people I know, or even people that might potentially become loved ones. Can anyone offer any advice as to how I can get over it?

I've thought about that a lot since my dad died. The only thing I can offer for advice is simply live your life. You can't let a loss or the fear of one to prevent you from living a good life. If you do you might as well already be dead.

Do what my Mom did, write a will. She went on a cruise recently and told me where and was and said, 'If we die, your aunt will be your legal guardian.' 'Mom, I'm 28. I don't need a legal guardian.'

I realize that I can die anytime, and anywhere. I let the knowledge that I cannot change that, as well as my faith, carry me through(let's not turn this into a religious thread, tho, ok?).

Death happens.

People don't like to look forward to their end, but it IS inevitable. The only reasonable thing you can do is NOT THINK ABOUT IT. Just enjoy life. I know people so paranoid about dying that they have UTTERLY miserable lives, locked in their homes, afraid of everything.

What's the point of living if it's just a mechanism to hold off your time of death?

Death is a part of life, you just gotta come to terms with it and accept it. You will die, whether it happens in the next hour or 100 years doesn't matter, the end result is the same. Accept the fact that you will die in an undetermined time within the next 100 years, and do as much as you can within that time. Live well, and don't be suprised when you see you're about to get run over by a dumptruck. :D

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either. :P

Pretty much just a rephrasing of what others have said:

"Plan for the future, but remember to live in the present"
(because you may never get to see that future)

"Treasure those around you, and don't let conflicts fester"
(because you may never have the chance to resolve them)

As they say, life is a genetically transmitted terminal disease. Being aware of death is a good thing - being aware of the fragility of life, we value it more and are less likely to take it for granted. Being obsessed with death is a bad thing - if you're too busy worrying about what happens when leave this mortal coil,it keeps you from actually enjoying life while you've got it. And that's just stupid!

How do you actually find that balance point of being aware without being obsessed? Well, I'm there, but I don't know how someone else might go about getting to the same point :P
